Those are some of my favourtie Sci-Fi books, I especially like the way Use of Weapons is told and the way it portrays the concept of war. Just finished reading this: I initially wrote it off as some generic paperback Sci-Fi, but I was pleasantly suprised at how interesting and well written it actually was, the planet it takes places on also has some very interesting ecology.
Never put anything from Asher as generic paperback sci fi :) I myself have been re-reading some China Mieville stuff. Iron council at the moment.
Has anyone ever tried taking a crack at Plato's Republic?
Had to in school. As well as machiavelli. Both are actually fairly interesting once you get into them. It's just the beginning that can be a bit mind numbing.
A while ago I also read the book, Earth Abides, by George R Stewart. It is a book about an outbreak that happened around the world and how the human race was almost wiped out but the few who were immune to it. I thought it was really interesting following all the decisions the Isherwood(Main character) makes throughout the book. Seeing as how he can do whatever he wants. My father gave me two books to read over spring break, I finished the first one: And I'm still reading the second one: These two are really good sci-fi novels if your into the idea of first contact.
What do you guys think of The Mortal Instruments book series? I quite like it. [editline]26th May 2011[/editline]
Been reading this nonstop in anticipation of meeting the autor, Max Brooks at Phoenix Comic Con.
My brother and I used to have this book, I can't remember where it ended up.
Has anyone ever read the Chronicles of Amber? My dad recommended to me and so far it's pretty good
And I'm still reading the second one: These two are really good sci-fi novels if your into the idea of first contact.
Still haven't gotten around to Mote, hear tell it's the best depicted first contact novel in all of sci-fi.
Really enjoyed this one, reading the second in the series now. Eventually going to finish them all..
Currently reading this: Already read the first two. AA+ series, would recommend it. [sp]I'm dead serious[/sp] [editline]25th May 2011[/editline] Also there is a very . . . "interesting" sex scene if you actively look for that sort of thing.
1984, All Quiet on the Western Front, War of the Worlds, Anthem, any poem from Edgar Allan Poe, and every Micheal Crichton book ever. That describes my favorite books.
I like the classics and we read this in class. The Count is a badass.

It like seeing a million spoofs and references to a movie and then seeing the actual one. Got the Prince but haven't had the time to read it yet. Hopefully I'll read it and learn from it rather than think I know better than them.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3256/2803710580_ef67e5fac1.jpg This book is quite awesome, I really enjoyed it :D (The origininal Title is "Krabat") I read the thread title as "Boobs"
Just bought these 3, starting with Feed. If you're in the UK, W.H.Smith is doing 15% off EVERY single book in the shop, and some pretty good paperbacks are down to a respectable £5, so it's worth checking out.
The Forever War is absolutely amazing. I wish I'd bought the omnibus because I want to read the sequels but can't find them seperately :saddowns:
I'm interested in human psychology, however, I do not wish to take an entire class to learn the content. I'm looking for a book or two that can give me good insight on the topic while still being enough to learn an understand content provided in a classroom curriculum. I'm looking for recommendations for a book or two. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Just finished reading this book last night, I thought it had a really nice ending to it.

Great book!
Fucking amazing. Though in all seriousness
Just got Metamorphosis and The Castle by Kafka. I've been meaning to read Kafka for ages, only just now making the first step :buddy:
Can anyone suggest some good science fiction? Preferably about space travel and mildly realistic. Also, I love Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton.
Ringworld sounds just fine for you.
Really good book. Very depressing, too. This has to be one of the best books I've ever read. It still depresses me about how my favorite fucking character [sp]dies in such a bad way. ALIIIIIICE.[/sp]
You should read Lucifer's Hammer if you liked One Second After.
Can anyone suggest some good science fiction? Preferably about space travel and mildly realistic. Also, I love Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton.
Singularity Sky is a good one by Charles Stross if you haven't read it, I'm reading it right now.
Anyone know anywhere good to start with short stories? I read in bursts, so novels aren't always the best for me, I forget details
Anyone know anywhere good to start with short stories? I read in bursts, so novels aren't always the best for me, I forget details
H.P. Lovecraft pretty much wrote only short stories, although they do require great attention. The short stories of J.D. Salinger and Stephen King are also really great. Check out Nine Stories and Skeleton Crew. [editline]30th May 2011[/editline] I just finished Thomas Pynchon's V. and I really enjoyed it. Starting up on William Burrough's Junky now.
Just finished watching the trilogy for the Lord of the Rings extended edition, makes me hungry to know how great the movie could've been with EVERYTHING. Going to start reading the trilogy. [editline]31st May 2011[/editline] Also the hobbit
The Hobbit > the trilogy I liked the trilogy when I was younger but now I just can't bear to read it anymore, it's probably because of a lot of factors (actions have no real consequence for the good guys, everyone spontaneously bursts into song like it's a musical)
