Been reading a lot lately, mostly books from my English class. They are as follows: Animal Farm, by George Orwell. The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. Night, by Elie Wiesel. Finally, right now I'm reading The Best Kept Secret, by John Purcell.
The Book Thief was such a depressing book, but it was incredible.
No doubt. I love the way it was laid out, with most of the book being not from Liesel's perspective but as a narrative of her life read out by another person.
Found this book the other day, pretty interesting... Didn't finish it cause all the stories were spoilt when every second sentence had to re-assure the reader that this antagonistic God character did it all somehow... But on a serious note, and it has probably all been said, i'm just reading The Amber Spyglass in His Dark Materials, and the whole series has blown my mind so far, can't wait to finish it. Also Vurt is amazing, so is Snow Crash, and Enders Game Not: if you haven't heard of Vurt, and love cyberpunk, you would be doing yourself a huge favour by going out and buying it. Now.

Morgan is a fucking brilliant man. The next book: And the last one I believe:
Just finished The Road by Cormac McCarthy, now, I know why it won the Pulitzer Prize. [sp]That pregnant woman, then eating the baby part, really fucked up my head.[/sp]
Definitely check out Blood Meridian by the same author. It's even more disturbing and violent than The Road. And better written IMO.
Finished reading The Reality Dysfunction a few weeks ago by Peter F Hamilton, and I'm hooked. Picked up The Neutronium Alchemist (sequel) and The Dreaming Void (different series, same guy) today. I'll just admit I love space operas.
This book is fucking awesome. I also had to print out every page one by one. Stupid rare book not being available in my area. :| It was worth it though, I highly recommend it if you like sci-fi and the S.T.A.L.K.E.R game series.
I've read it twice, great book. I was lucky enough to find a hardcover copy at my school that had Roadside Picnic and Tale of the Troika. :allears:
I stole my copy of Brave New World from my school before I graduated.
Just started, great book so far.
I just bought this book as well, haven't started it yet.
Which one should I read for my AP English III summer reading? Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America, by Barbara Ehrenreich Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science, by Atul Gawande Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books, by Azar Nafisi Where Men Win Glory, by Jon Krakauer The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot
Flip a coin between Krakauer and Ehrenreich, those are the best of the bunch.
Got an Amazon Kindle for a gift. Reading this now.
I'm on page 280 of Atlus Shurgged and boy does it drag on! Still really interesting though,[sp]I'm at the part where Dagny and Hank are sex partners and they go at it every second Jesus Dagny has really low self-esteem doesn't she?[/sp]
Currently reading this.
It's also her only decently written book.
Which one? Anthem or the Fountainhead?
I don't get why people like that book so much I thought it was really average.
I did not say I liked it. I like No Country for Old Men better. I just read it cause I wanted to know why the fuck it won the Pulitzer.
Who else here has read The Hobbit all the way through?
I did, about 6 years ago.
Tried to in elementary, couldn't do it.
I stole my copy of Brave New World from my school before I graduated.
I did the same with 1984.
I've never read any books I really enjoyed. Guess I should read some Tolkien and survival scenario books, which seem really good.
I've never read any books I really enjoyed. Guess I should read some Tolkien and survival scenario books, which seem really good.
I wouldn't recommend that much of Tolkien's if you're having trouble enjoying books. What I'd recommend if you're starting off with books is for any Survival Scenario, definitely Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. For fantasy, The Hobbit by Tolkien is a good starter since it's simpler in nature, and an easy read. A Science Fiction book I'd recommend to anyone for good flow and an awesome story is Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Really great book.
Heck, I wouldn't recommend much of Tolkien even if you do enjoy reading. His books are notoriously hard to read, even among books that are notoriously hard to read. Although, if you're intent on reading Tolkien, the Hobbit's a good place to start. Personally, I've only read Hobbit and Fellowship; I couldn't even be bothered to read Two Towers or Return of the King.
Tolkien can be tough, but he is really good if you can get it into it. If you want good books of real literary significance that are really easy reads, read some Vonnegut.
Can anyone recommend a Dystopian book I haven't read? I've read 1984, Animal Farm, A Clockwork Orange, Little Brother, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, and a bunch of others. Please don't tell me I've read all the good ones :gonk:
Fuck, there's one I read a year or two ago but I can't remember the name.
A pure science fantasy classic.
This book also made a good adaption to film
Currently Reading: Its a really good book. Got me hooked onto the Hunger Games series. Can't wait for the movie.

I got it for free though so I don't know if it'd be worth the $15-$20 it cost. v:v:v Just finished Papillon by Henri Charriere, which had me completely engrossed for awhile- highly recommended. Before that I read The Stranger by Albert Camus, which I'm now attempting to read in French simply because I happen to have a French language copy of the book.
