Any of you asoiaf fans finished this yet? I absolutely loved it, though it stagnated a bit due to being written alongside a feast for crows, so there were no big new plot elements in most of the POV's until later in the book.
Yeah, I loved it.
I'm just starting Stephen King's The Dark Tower series. I read the foreword, introduction, and the first ten pages. Heard really good things but man in the foreword he talks about how he won't go into the details of the car crash that changed his life so much and then he spends ten pages rambling on about it.
The first book is going to be a little hard to understand, but once you read the second book it'll be a lot more clear. The fourth book in the series is amazing by the way. I just got started with the sixth.

I can see how Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name character influenced King's portrayal of the gunslinger.
About halfway through this one. In other news, does anyone have any experience with any ereaders? I'm really considering picking up a Kindle whenever they release the next installment.
Finally finished: Now onto: @Strider, Kindle 4 comes out this fall, supposedly.
Yeah that's what I hear, especially considering they just lowered the prices on their refurbished Kindle 3s. Pretty dead giveaway.
Apparently it's going to have a colour e-ink screen. :flashfap:
Oh hell yes, been thinking of getting a Kindle, will probably wait till the new one
Apparently it's going to have a colour e-ink screen. :flashfap:
That would be quite the breakthrough. [editline]11th August 2011[/editline]
Oh hell yes, been thinking of getting a Kindle, will probably wait till the new one
Yeah I'm definitely going to wait, recent incidents seem to augur an upcoming release in the near future.
It's not a breakthrough, but it's only in one e-reader at the moment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_Ink#E_Ink_Triton
Oh that's fucking great I just got a Kindle 3 this year.
I got mine about 7 months ago. I'll probably sell it to a friend and buy a Kindle 4, since I have all my books backed up to my PC anyway.
Oh that's fucking great I just got a Kindle 3 this year.
Well technology will always be updated. The Kindle only released last year if I remember correctly. You could try getting rid of it on Ebay before the release of the next one, or if you purchased it within the past 30 days you can return it to Amazon.
Piece of advise for everyone. DO NOT read Alice in Wonderland for the first time right before you go to sleep. Weird dreams....
Piece of advise for everyone. DO NOT read Alice in Wonderland for the first time right before you go to sleep. Weird dreams....
I always told myself that the first time I drop acid, I will attempt to try and read this book.
Just finished Generation Kill. Found it quite enjoyable, interesting, and often pretty funny.
If you haven't seen the show I suggest that too.
Hey. Could someone suggest me a book about dragons? NOT Eragon, and preferrably not from Dragonriders of Pern, I want to try something different.
Do you want it to just feature dragons, or them being the main plot element?
Just finished Rendezvous With Rama. It was good, even if the character writing was kinda lame the science fiction was very good.
I kinda enjoyed the later novels written by Gentry Lee more than the original, because it had actual characters, even if the science fiction was toned down.
I haven't read those (and to be honest I don't really intend to) but yeah, the characters were terrible. It's like he was obviously trying, but all the bits about the what the captain was thinking and his relationship with his wives, as well as most of the dialogue sounded so artificial and forced it would almost have been better if he'd skipped it altogether. Also it's probably just me but it kinda got boring how there was almost no drama or conflict throughout the book. Everything just happens and the characters are just spectators, which is why even though Rama probably had the better realized science fiction ideas and so on, I think I prefer Ringworld as a book because while it explores many of the same issues and ideas it has interesting and likable characters and a bit more in the way of drama and conflict to back it up. However even having said that the exploration of the idea and logistics of the artificial world is truly something great, and I would definitely recommend the novel. It's just not perfect.
Do you want it to just feature dragons, or them being the main plot element?
Doesn't matter as long as those dragons as cool and/or likable.
What Dragon featuring books have you read so far?
Featuring? Well... The Hobbit had a dragon in it, as did Silmarillion; "Another Fine Mith" was nice; Don't think I've anything else with a dragon in it.
Well, umm, Dragonlance may not be the pinnacle of the fantasy genre but it features a lot of dragons And uh I suppose the A Song of Ice and Fire series talks about dragons a lot I honestly can't recommend much as I tend to stray away the kind of novels that feature dragons heavily
I'm right in the middle of Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein. Really enjoyable so far. I first read Starship Troopers and liked it immensely, and then I heard Stranger was even better, so I had to read that. Thing is though, Valentine Michael Smith, the Man from Mars, has kinda started turning into the most egregious Mary Sue this side of Harry Dresden. Really great book, but my enjoyment of it is spoiled somewhat because I'm starting to kinda hate the main-ish character.

Has anyone read any books by L. Ron. Hubbard? While he is a cocknozzle, I've heard he is a great writer.
