The book was really good, but I can't help wondering, whats the message suppose to be? Don't try changing anything or you'll get the shit beaten out of you?

If what I'm reading is meant to be escape, why should it be an escape that makes me feel worse?

Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut is a big recommendation from me. I think it's better than Slaughter House Five
Got this one from the library. Supposed to be his best work alongside Fight Club.
If you like cool Psychological Thrillers, this is for you.
I read this a year or two back, and it was good. At the moment I'm reading Stephen King's "Black Tower" series, which has seven books in total (reading the last one). Gotta say, it is goddamn good, but reaches only the third place in my top book series (I'll see if that changes once I finish it). On the second place is still "Juoppohullun Päiväkirja" (not sure what it is called in English), and the 1. place goes to Robin Hobb's "Farseer Trilogy", and the following "Lord Golden Trilogy". Those were just awesome.

Well written books can sometimes be the opposite of escapism; they can help you look at reality from different perspectives, but you're still looking at the same reality. Obviously some books are pure escapism, but not all, even if they are technically fictional. [editline]23rd January 2012[/editline] also pessimism can be cathartic [editline]23rd January 2012[/editline] also i haven't actually read the book you're on about, but just in general
Disregarding scientology, are any of L. Ron Hubbard's books worth reading?
Can anyone recommend me a book about objective morality?
Can anyone recommend me a book about objective morality?
Have you checked out Sam Harris' The Moral Landscape ?
Yeah, read it and I'm actually writing an essay about it but I need more books to get a better grasp on objective morals
I need to find a good British novel/book that came out within the last 10 years or so for a school project. Any ideas?
Reading this thread just makes me want to get all of these books and stash them some place in my house and read them one at a time.
I need to find a good British novel/book that came out within the last 10 years or so for a school project. Any ideas?
Does Welsh count? :v:
Does Welsh count? :v:
I could try. It is for a Brit. Lit. Class.
Reading the Gormenghast trilogy by Mervyn Peake. First few chapters are whimsical and a bit odd but from there on it just gets weird and kind of dark. They weren't wrong when they said it's pretty much ipossible to properly classify, it really isn't like anything else.
Getting these 2 books, has anyone read them?
No, but I can't really imagine Betrand Russell being bad. He was a really brilliant man and a great writer.
I could try. It is for a Brit. Lit. Class.
British? Then Welsh does count, it is a British culture.
Just finished reading and it's probably my favourite book now apart from the catcher in the rye. Awesomely written with awesome dialouge! [editline]28th January 2012[/editline] and awesome characters and story too :p

I decided to start picking up books again after boredom and other influences, and borrowed random books from the library cos I had no idea. Picked up a book called Out of the dark by David Webber, most worthless piece of shit waste of time ever. Initial premise was alright, a typical alien invasion book with a twist the invader's weapons were inferior, and typical themes of resistance and human spirit, but CLUSTERED with gun porn details of every fucking gun/vehicle ever, along with the most fucking retarded deus ex machina I ever reas,(Vampires kill off the entire invader fleet in the last 30 pages I am not even joking) Fuck this shit recommend me some good books, topic I am flexible on. I am lookong to pick up the hunger games series though.
My orders of The Count of Monte Cristo (Unabridged, Paperback) and Lost Horizon are supposedly being delivered to my house tomorrow. It was really tempting to read the abridged version at my college's library, but thank goodness I held out. Thank you Amazon/Postal Service for your fast shipping!

It's about a group of people that go around selling objects to people in their dreams.
Really funny especially the footnotes. Really want the audiobook.
Haha oh wow it's literally right beside me, didn't read it though, had it for ages. [editline]28th January 2012[/editline] Dream merchant I mean

[editline]28th January 2012[/editline] Dream merchant I mean
wow, out of all the books that I could have chosen from my bookshelf I chose the one next to you. Also, if you're into some weird erotic love story between a father and son read this: I enjoyed it greatly, the humour was great, good characters and the story was incredible
[t]http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l545/WhatTheNovar/IMAG0105.jpg[/t] It's a sign :o Got 2 other books though, Shogun by James clavell (Last Samurai the book from what I can tell with the blurb) and thr border trilogy by Cormac McCarthy, cos The Road was brilliant and No country was issued.

Read Rainmaker a while back. Surprisingly interesting, considering I don't have much interest in law.

The Great Gatsby had a very sad ending, but it was so readily analyzed and picked apart for various messages that I really enjoy its take on modernist reality. I didn't really word my initial post right. It's not that I don't enjoy books that are sad or tell a bit of a sad message, I just don't like them when they're sad for the sake of it.
