I liked the dirt sound, it was just the rawness of that first album that got me the most.
Yeah, I loved the ThickFreakNess album... good times.
Theres a degree of truth to that depending on what era you listen to. Personally I loved what they did with Dave Navarro on One Hot Minute back in 95. Although a lot of fans didn't like it because of the funk being dropped it was a much deeper, multi layered rock album for a band like them who before that had done an album about teenage sexual adventure.
Wow a real live Patrick Bateman.
Holy Fuck
I can't resist it.
I've got some waste product of a miscarrage, dragging his dried up textual wankrag over my masterpieces and I'm supposed to take it serious? The sign was quite clear before you opened the door, NSFW. Yes that means contained are things of an adult nature.
Would you rather I draw puppies and kittens licking and sniffing the ripped entrails of a dead, raped, bitches cunt? I can paste you some pink bows on her intestines and draw pikachu wrapping her torn bowels round the shaft of his penis as love milk showers over her shredded breasts. Would that soften the blow?
Welcome to Reichsfuhrer, Painthitler Jewdozer's MS Paint thread of adult horrors. Bow before me and beg forgiveness and I might let you feed from the crumbs that fall from my table where I feast and sing songs of victory.
He really was a real live Patrick Bateman. :ohdear:
I wrote this up yesterday, but had to go before I could post it:
Well, I decided to give a few more tracks from Heritage a listen. Here's my opinions of them. Note I started writing this after listening to "Famine," hence why it has a lot less commentary than the others, because I wrote this while listening to those songs.
Famine:
Had a few parts that were pretty good, like the Stoner/Doom segment at 4:50. However, overall completely unmemorable. Didn't much care for Mikael's vocals in a lot of it. Didn't change my opinion.
Slither:
Holy fuck. From the very intro riff, I knew I would like this song. This song had me bobbing my head and doing some air-snares throughout the entire track, and Mikael's vocals were great on this track. Powerful, uplifting, and energetic. If more of the album was like this, then I could maybe forgive tracks like "The Devil's Orchard" and "Famine." Nothing more to say. This track is awesome, through and through. Lyrics, vocals, riffs, drums. Everything is amazing.
Pyre:
Like the intro. Nice and mellow; very soothing. Mikael's vocals, while not fitting as well as they did on "Slither", still fit okay. Overall, a track I would expect to hear on Damnation - has a lot of that attitude to it. Naturally, then, I like it. At this point my opinion is starting to change. Perhaps I just had rotten luck and listened to the only two tracks on the album I wouldn't really like? ("The Devil's Orchard" and "Famine.")
I Feel the Dark:
Again, I don't think Mikael's vocals really fit this song snugly. Fit better than on "The Devil's Orchard" or "Famine," though. Not as good as "Slither." I like the minimalist guitar riff in the intro, and the band's subtle use of synths is, as always, very tasteful. When the drums came in around 1:10, got me tapping my foot and bobbing my head, but then, any powerful drumbeat does that. The overdriven guitar parts are nice, but overall too short. However, all in all, not terribly memorable.
The Lines In My Hand:
Another song that Mikael's vocals fit fairly well in. The intro is quite memorable, with the drums taking the lead behind a powerful bass line. I enjoy the prominence in the drums in this song - about time the drummer got some spotlight time with Opeth. My biggest complain with this song? It's too short. The energy the drums give this song could have been played on so much longer. The solo at 2:38 is evidence of what all this song could do. Shame they couldn't even wrap it into a full four minutes.
Conclusion:
Out of the tracks I have listened to, only "Famine" and "The Devil's Orchard" I outright didn't like. On the same token, "Slither" was a downright awesome song that I really liked. "Pyre" was enjoyable, and was fairly memorable. "I Feel the Dark" was good, but overall not memorable. "The Lines In My Hand" had a really enjoyable bassline and drum lead, but was overall too short.
In conclusion, the album isn't as bad as I first thought. However, I think that this attempt is a bit too scatter-shot for a resolute "I enjoy" / "I don't enjoy." They tried to hit too many genres, influences, and audiences with this one album. While overall I enjoy the album, due to the disparity between the songs, and the two tracks I personally find to be duds, I don't think I'll be getting this album.
Here's hoping that, if Opeth intend to evolve upon the seeds sown by this album, they go more in the approach of tracks like "The Lines in My Hand" and "Slither," and less like "The Devil's Orchard" and "Famine." I wouldn't mind if they even threw in a Pyre-esque song, as a sort of release.
Again, all in my own taste.
Why on earth write reviews while listening to them? Let it sink in, dammit. :v:

Also, your lack of giving the album a start to finish listen while chilling, is disturbing. :)

To convince you I listened to it, since you probably wouldn't believe me elsewise.
I'm sorry, but all in all I just don't much care for it. It was more "miss" than "hit."
The one and only time I have ever said a good thing about St. Anger was after I listened to Lulu. Lulu... words cannot describe how bad it was.
At least Lulu was recorded in a studio and not a tin can
St. Anger wasn't bad because it was lame, it was bad because of the loud production. It's so boringly loud.
St. Anger was pretty lame really, I must say I have a guilty pleasure for the title track though. I heard Lars was considering issuing a public apology for his snare tone.
