• [CONTROVERSY] Why do you listen to things like dubstep/techno-remixes/unf-unf-unf musics?

Each song has it's mood and feeling. Each person wants to feel a certain way. If the person wants to feel calm then they will listen to a song that makes them calm. The same could be for any other emotion/feeling. You just happen to not want to feel what the song has to offer. At least some good has come from this thread for me. I got the name of a genera I like.
You see how this can go in many different ways, right? People listen to what they like. Different strokes for different folks.
You did not get the point that, yes - You can apply that to any genre, but I know why I listen to *industrial* but I do not know why people listen to dubstep or shitty techno. [editline]26th December 2010[/editline]
hey op it's a bad bad idea to question someone's musical tastes, ok if you do then it pretty much means you're a giant prick
You also didn't get it. [editline]26th December 2010[/editline]
OP They listen to what they like, it's not your duty to appoint them of their "bad music taste" just because you don't like it. And they probably have their own reasons behind liking it just like you do with your favourite type(s) of genre(s). I for one like everything, except New rap, death-metal (melodic exception), and most "dull/dumb" electro. But I still like the people who listen to it, and I respect their music choice. Also, to say that "electro sucks" is to say the whole electro genre sucks, including it's sub-genres and progressive artists in that genre, which is just dumbing it all down.
ALSO doesn't get it. [editline]26th December 2010[/editline] It's like if anyone sees "Why do you" mixed in with "*genre*" people are all up in arms about "WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?! WHO ARE YOU TO SAY WHAT IS BAD BLAH BLAH BLAH". Read the damn thread you dunces.
You did not get the point that, yes - You can apply that to any genre, but I know why I listen to *industrial* but I do not know why people listen to dubstep or shitty techno.
You didn't get my point. The reason why we listen to music is the same reason why you listen: We enjoy it.
Well WHY do you enjoy the music you enjoy? There is more to it then "derp i juzz liek it."
Well WHY do you enjoy the music you enjoy? There is more to it then "derp i juzz liek it."
I suppose it comes from a lot of things. I remember when I was growing up I used to stumble upon live DJ mixes on the radio late at night. During that same time period, my mom forced me to listen to the 90's Eurodance stuff while in the car. (Dreadful but when I look back on it those cheesy songs were actually kind of fun.) I tried out rap, rock, country, etc. Nothing really seemed to 'click' with me, I just wanted to listen to that "weird, no singer music" I discovered when I was little; it wasn't until I think late 2003 that I actually started listening to "techno" (at least that is what I called it back then, boy was I wrong.) That taste developed, just like everyone's taste. What attracts me to electronic music is just that it entices a thoughtful, contemplative responsive (sometimes emotional!). I just don't get that from other genres, and I am positive you can say the same about your taste in music. The final thing I enjoy about it is the underground, free-spirit scene that came with it. This is the part that worries me the most because I honestly don't see, or feel rather, that vibe coming from today's scene; there seems to be little to no connection between the scene then and the scene now. People are too afraid to have fun on their own and need to be told what to do. A good example of what good unf-unf-unf music is + the atmosphere (Lasers are fine, too) Within that short period of time, the DJ mixed three songs together, dropped samples, and made an outstanding mix (Especially around the 2:55 mark, can't go wrong with Fargetta). He is free to do whatever he wishes and I bet he had a blast doing it too, which is a good portrayal of what these crazy parties should be all about; doing whatever the hell you want and having fun/enjoying yourself; being free. This good enough for an answer? :)
Why do you act all sarcastic when that is exactly what I asked for in the OP? It's not as if you are being a smart ass or something.
Why do you act all sarcastic when that is exactly what I asked for in the OP? It's not as if you are being a smart ass or something.
Judging from the responses you got, I think the original post was a bit vague. Why do you criticize my post instead of actually replying to it? Edit: I also fail to see the smartassness of my post, it must be the brandy talking.
"This good enough for an answer? :)" I'm sorry I didn't know I had to point it out to you. :)
I don't normally comment on it. But god it pisses me off. These "artists" get heaps of recognition very easily for doing something that's incredibly easy and requires almost no natural talent. They take samples and place them in a specific order and people think they're the coolest people on earth. Pretty much anyone can do it passably. There is good electronic music but that's always the experimental stuff that actually uses creativity. Or the kind that actually shows musical talent through complex production or actual instrumentation (ie. Radiohead, Bass Communion, ambient music, some dnb.) But I cannot respect or condone this repeditive shit that people keep mindlessly churning out. I don't think it's particularly laughable to imagine a future where a live concert consists of someone playing an audio track whilst people dance, not DJing or anything; just playing the song. And that's not a good thing in my eyes. And there's my little rant on the subject. Sorry if I've pissed anyone off, I normally shut up about it, people can like what they like, but the culture surrounding it and what it's doing to the music industry and music in general is incredibly annoying to me.
No offense, but making a good song for any genre is hard.
No offense, but making a good song for any genre is hard.
Yes, I know that first hand. However the problem with modern electronic music is that hardly anyone seems to be bothering to put in the effort.
"This good enough for an answer? :)" I'm sorry I didn't know I had to point it out to you. :)
I think this is a good thread and you've raised a good discussion in an intelligent way, but Jin was one of the first people to put forward a proper case for why he likes it. I don't think he was at all being a smartass. Lay off him.
I guess he could have just as easily been serious as he could have been sarcastic. But it is hard to tell over the internet. So, I apologize.
http://www.reddit.com/r/futuregarage is what I'm interested in when it comes to new music. (If you click that link, be cautious because that footcrab song is a really silly one, that I wouldn't recommend to any one until they got used to the genre/subgenre) It's not stuff you can just flop around to, but you can dance to it if you want. Most other electronic music I listen to is drum and bass and downtempo/trip hop stuff. I like bass that doesn't make you want to shit out bricks, but give you a deep vibe to go with smooth melodies. Having a danceable beat doesn't mean it's any less of musical though. It just means it can be played whenever you are in the mood.
Some people just have more simple tastes than others. A guido can fist-pump to unf-unf-unfs all night long and have the time of his life, in the same way a metalhead can whip their hair to CHUGACHUGACHUGA, some folks are just more easily amused I guess.
Because listening to music is completely about the physical actions you perform in the name of such.
You have to remember that Sporkfire is a fucking retard.

Opinions. Also I fucking love electronica, but I don't like that song particularly. See? Opinions.
Everything you said about electronic music can be applied to any other music genre, and if you honestly hold the opinion stated in the OP I see no reason to share my music tastes and reasons with you.
ALSO, OP, let me pose a counter question. Please answer it. Why do you like whatever music you like. What is it that entices you. When you can explain that, I'll explain why I like electronic music.
duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurp.
You're only saying the same thing many others have said. Read the thread.
You're only saying the same thing many others have said. Read the thread.
I read it all. Answer my question.
Yes, I know that first hand. However the problem with modern electronic music is that hardly anyone seems to be bothering to put in the effort.
There are still plenty of producers putting in the effort. You just aren't looking hard enough.
Well WHY do you enjoy the music you enjoy? There is more to it then "derp i juzz liek it."
I don't like dubstep that much (box box box box), but I listen to "techno" (or at least what you're reffering to as techno) because of the atmosphere it creates and the kind of sounds you can get from a synth or anything like that. There's a lot that you can't do with a guitar or bass that you can do with a synth. This is probably just me, but I also sort of like repetitiveness so I tend to listen to music that's sort of repetitive. Does that answer your question? ED: Electronic music is not the only thing I listen to, either. I have a penchant for Classic Rock and some subgenres of Metal, and I pretty much grew up on Prog Rock. I've also been caught on occasion listening to Pop.
I read it all. Answer my question.
For the reason people listen to "horizontal" music given in this: "A helpful analogy is that you can listen to music horizontally (where the enjoyment comes from following the development or narrative of the track) or vertically (where the enjoyment comes from appreciating different ways that the simultaneous layers of the track overlap and interact). A lot of repetitive electronic music is very vertical as opposed to horizontal music." Really, everything that what you call "electronic" music does, is the why I like the opposite. I personally find that say, something like Kid A (been listening to it a lot) is very textured and has a lot of depth to it, while dubstep and stuff like that may have some depth, but honestly it's very little. There may be complexity but that doesn't make it more than what it is, dance music. It also gives it a more relaxed atmosphere, and it feels more meaningful and emotional. In short, opinions.
Saying opinions is fucking retarded because it's redundant to state "I have an opinion" because it's only human nature to have one. It's a cop-out. You don't like something because "opinions". You like something because you have a reason. An opinion is something achieved through having reasons. You're short changing yourself if you just clump everything into "opinions."
You did not get the point that, yes - You can apply that to any genre, but I know why I listen to *industrial* but I do not know why people listen to dubstep or shitty techno.
I think a better question would be, why isn't everyone posting threads like this?

Here let me show you
The depth is what makes the music special. Instead of rushing forwards, it goes deep, and gives every second meaning. I can listen to this song all day
Did you notice the paragraph above that maybe? Here let me show you See. Notice I had more than the opinions part there? Thanks.
I'm saying it to that part only. Because it's dumb to say. And to anyone else who has said "OPINIONS!!" [editline]27th December 2010[/editline] And even more hostility. Normal people don't become so defensive when someone's opinion differs. So, in the future calm the fuck down. Thanks.
this is a legit question, and could raise some interesting discussion, but only if Take_Opal didn't feel like he has to act like a fucking prick to anyone who answers it. i for one only listen to it on a party, a night out, or when being with friends, because it's generally fun to sing along to a shit remix of nothing else matters, or some new fancy electric song no one really likes, but everyone knows it because theres always some kid with a mobile phone playing it over and over. [editline]27th December 2010[/editline] i would never pick this music over the music i usually listen, or listen to it when i'm just trying to enjoy music.
no one can fuck with Take_Opal anymore because kid a is my favourite radiohead album
