Will post a picture of my gear later, but I'm a big fan of buying old OM mount lenses and using them on my EOS body. I have a Chinese-made adapter with an AF-assist chip and I can get away with absolute murder with the combination.
I can get a 10mm OM lens for £120, and use it with my EOS body with the only issue being no autofocus. But then, as an avid user of the OM series anyway, I don't find myself needing it!
Does anyone know of any firmware hacking for the D3100?
I've heard people have done wonders with hacking the 5D Mark ii to get amazing video stuff, as well as the 550D
I read your post but the 550D was out of my budget, and many people have said that the D3100 is Nikon's first half decent video DSLR

half decent. Save up for the 550D, it's worth it.

lol we already had this discussion, I'm not sure whether I like the hobby enough to justify spending that much money on a 550D, and I have to draw the line somewhere, can't just say "oh it's only another 100 quid I might as well get that" because there's no real end to that
Alright so I did it, I bought a 430ex II, 58mm Circular Polarizing Filter, 58mm 0.9 ND Filter, and a Shutter Release Cable for Bulb Mode. All for $297.54
I now shall declare bankruptcy, and rob a bank :v:

If you don't like it, you can always sell it on for a nice chunk of what you paid for it. You won't need another DSLR for a long time. You might find yourself limited by the capabilities of the D3100 (AF motor being the main one)

it arrived today! I really like it, feels good in the hands, take pretty nice pictures
When and if I get another DSLR, it'll probably be a Canon for the sake of video recording, so if I want to get more lenses for this, should I get canon ones and use a lens mount adapter?
Panasonic Lumix G2
Stock 14-42mm lens
Olympus 50mm lens
Nikon Nikkor 55mm lens
16GB SD Card
Caselogic SLR Camera Sling
Dolcia 62'' Tripod
Still looking for a flash, any recommendations?

I'm fairly certain they don't make any Canon -> Nikon adapters. Has something to do with the flange focal distance.
I'd go for Nikon glass and use a Nikon -> Canon adapter, or just sell it, if you switch over. However, it'll probably be a while before you upgrade and by then Nikon may have caught up enough to be competitive in the video market.
Pop up flashes are for if you're in a pinch and have nothing else for light.
When I use the popup it never goes above -2/3, unless the situation heavily demands it. Most of the time I just tape an index card to my body to help diffuse the light.
I can just about remember posting that.
Here is my current "setup" if you will, I will be getting a tripod within the next few days, and i'll then begin saving for an 24-105mm L lens, which will take some time :)

A canon 500D
430EXII
18-55mm kit lens
Batterygrip (not canon, copy most likely, but one with remote trigger)

I might get a battery grip as my next purchase, but I need to find one that fits the T3/1100D. That and I need to buy a backpack soon because I'm running out of room for stuff in my small bag. :v:
Speaking of battery grips, is there any reason why only the top end camera for Nikon and Canon has them?
Speaking of battery grips, is there any reason why only the top end camera for Nikon and Canon has them?
because professional users need them more

I thought that might be it, but they should at least have them on a few cameras rather than just the very best one
Anyone here recommend a good film scanner? I was looking at the Epson V600 but I'm not quite sold on it yet.

I got a Battery Grip for my 550D since April 2010 or so? (Pretty much when the cam came out..)
Oh and I was wondering if I should get a Speedlite 580EX II in addition to my 380EX?

oh no, I meant by default. It just seems odd that they'd spare the guy who buys a 1D the expense of a battery grip, but not the guy who buys the 5D for example
Have you ever held any of the big two's flagship bodies? It feels nice to have a brick in your hands and all but it's not very pleasant to carry around all that weight. Also, what do you mean ''spare the expense of a battery grip for the 1D owners''? The flagships cost more than twice as much than the lower end FF bodies!
Anyone dabbled in third party BGs?
Also, I have an opportunity to get a mint Canon EF-S 10-22 for a little over £400, unless I can haggle him down. Should I go for it?
Any suggestions on a good lens for video? I only have the 18-135mm kit lens but id like something more quiet and I don't really need such a large zoom. Also I don't want something with a super shallow focus. (won't be using AF for video)

If you don't want super shallow focus, just get a wide angle and stop down

Uhh, yeah. My grip is a fake or copy, I am not entirely sure. The quality is excellent and it comes with the features of a remote trigger which an original canon grip doesn't have. It's the best 30 dollars I've ever used.
oooooh boy, so I just got $200 worth of new equipment shipped to my office as payment for some photoshop work, oohohoho

• third-party battery grip for my D7000, and a secondary battery. The grip works perfectly fine and is comfy, I don't see why I'd spend three times as much on the official one other than to know it's made of magnesium alloy. for you d7k owners, this is great.
oh god I hope I can put this shit to good use

I love my 10-22, It's a great lens to have. You should definitely go for it at that price, that's a great deal.

Sweet buys man, I'm hoping I can start earning money from this hobby. The first night I went to a pub (with my camera) for a few drinks the owner asked me to take some photos of the pub next time I visit so he can put them up on their website. I might get a few euros under the table, or even better: my drinks paid for.
Damn it, 10-22 sold 10 minutes before I contacted the guy.

HAH. I agree. I held my buddies T2i and it felt like a toy... quite sadly.
