Why would you want to do that? The 70-300L is a fine lens, but it isn't exactly light sensitive and the added range doesn't add much to your 70-200. I think it would be more easy to just buy a 1.4x II or a 2x II extender (in both cases you will still have AF). And if you want IS, my advice would be to just save for a 70-200 2.8L IS II, or get a 70-200 2.8L IS version 1 second hand instead (also a fine lens and the price is about as much or under a 70-300L new)
I never thought about getting a teleconverter, that's a good idea. How badly do they degrade the image quality anyways? I've heard mixed reviews about them.
I never thought about getting a teleconverter, that's a good idea. How badly do they degrade the image quality anyways? It does take away stops though so a 2x teleconverter will make a 200mm f2.8 lens into a 400mm f5.6 lens
It's been a while since I've posted but I have some new equipment so I'll go ahead and post everything that I do own. Love the Canon EOS 600D so far. Trying to play with manual exposure as much as possible, and to figure out what does what.
Thinking about investing in a canon 50mm f/1.8. Or do you think I should save up the extra $230 for the f/1.4? Right now I only have my 60d with the 18-135mm kit lens.
I never thought about getting a teleconverter, that's a good idea. How badly do they degrade the image quality anyways? I've heard mixed reviews about them.
I always heard good stories about the 1.4x extenders, but the 2x extender is not really known to me. I did hear the version 1 2x extender was very shitty, and they improved it alot with the Version 2. Ofcourse there now is a version 3 now of both extenders, and they improved image quality even more i read. This is a resolution chart comparison of the 70-200 2.8L with 1.4x II extender(this one is already very good, and i wouldnt bother buying the version 3 of this) and without it: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=242&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=4&API=0&LensComp=242&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=5&APIComp=1 And this one is with the 2.0x III extender, as you can see the image quality does degrade alot with this one on the long end on 5.6, but when you stop down to F8 the quality does get alot better: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=242&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=4&API=0&LensComp=242&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=8&APIComp=1 Hopefully the links will work correct.
I'd like to buy a nice cheap flash for my D3100, any recommendations? I don't really want to spend more than 50 quid if possible
Nice and cheap is hard to do. Your best bet is looking on ebay for something second hand. [editline]11th September 2011[/editline] It'll be hard to find something nice for that price.
I'd like to buy a nice cheap flash for my D3100, any recommendations? I don't really want to spend more than 50 quid if possible
Get a Yongnuo. If you don't mind a manual flash, get the YN-560. If you want automatic, get the YN-467, but you lose some output power. My friend has the YN-467 and it is very nice, decent output power and built very well. Order from their official eBay store to get a warranty: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/hkyongnuophotoequipment

Also, is it worth getting a diffuser for my pop up flash so that I can take alright portraits?
Thanks, I'll check that out :) Whats the difference between manual and auto? Also, is it worth getting a diffuser for my pop up flash so that I can take alright portraits?
No diffuser is going to make a pop up flash any good. Manual flash is where you set the output power manually, i.e 1/1 (Full power) down to 1/32 or 1/64 or whatever the flash goes down to. Automatic flash means the camera tells the flash what power to use based on the lighting (In the same way you meter a shot in A or S mode), but you can also switch it to manual mode if you want to. http://speedlights.net/ has reviews of most flashes. The other thing to consider is the guide number. That tells you how powerful the flash is.
I never thought about getting a teleconverter, that's a good idea. How badly do they degrade the image quality anyways? On a 1-1 basis, unless you pixel peep, not really that much of a difference. I'm still justifying the cost of the 1.4x teleconverter. To me, being that I only have 1 lens that could take advantage of it, Doesn't seem worth it.
What! 600D already out, what's new from 550D apart from the screen?
Yay got my C330 today. Now all I need is a strap for it, damn it's heavy.
Yay it came! It's a 7D by the way. Need to sell my canon 30D now anyone in the UK want it? Roughly 25K shutter actuation.
This guy on craigslist is selling a canon FD 50mm f1.4 for $50, is it worth getting? I have a 50mm FD 1.8 right now, and i've heard the 1.4 is a bit sharper, and lets in more light. nothing is wrong with either lens optically.

It's definitely worth the price, although I did like the sigma version better.
well my dilemma was solved rather well. I was taking my brother to a birthday party in peoria, and stumbled upon this weird pawn shop that I decided to go in. I'm really glad I did, because I found one of the best purchases of my entire life. anyone want to take a guess at how much this guy set me back? They sell for upwards of $300 on ebay btw. it was $30.
Can anyone recommend me a good camera to get started with? I will take a photo of anything as long as it looks beautiful in my eyes and I have a fascination with anything to do with nature. Looking around £250 max.

Someone i know on flickr has made a conversion kit for this lens to mount it on a Canon EOS camera. Link is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ontarian/sets/72157627274495558/ I would love to have that lens too myself to convert it to EF mount....
Get the 1.4. The 1.8 is good for the price but it just feels cheapish to me. I regret not getting the 1.4 but that's just my opinion.
Why? The 1.4 has its share of problems. It's notorious for back focussing and needing to be sent in for calibration, and they have pretty much equivalent image quality from f/2 onwards(Unless you pixel peep, but is that really worth the extra money?). I shoot mine wide open all the time and the image quality is superb. The AF on the 1.8 is fast, too. The AF in the 1.4 version is not even a proper USM ring type. Save that extra money for a future purchase.
The Nikon 50mm f/1.4 is worth the upgrade from 1.8, if anyone's thinking they're in any way similar.

Huh? I see no mention of FD in the original post:
Thinking about investing in a canon 50mm f/1.8. Or do you think I should save up the extra $230 for the f/1.4? Right now I only have my 60d with the 18-135mm kit lens.
Anyone have the 17-40mm f/4 USM L lens? Going to buy it in the next few days, just want a general idea of what people think of it?
i used it, it's sharp but f/4 is slow
