f/4 is fine considering you won't need to stop down to get acceptable sharpness for large prints, and it especially doesn't matter if he uses a full frame camera.
well my dilemma was solved rather well. I was taking my brother to a birthday party in peoria, and stumbled upon this weird pawn shop that I decided to go in. I'm really glad I did, because I found one of the best purchases of my entire life.

anyone want to take a guess at how much this guy set me back? They sell for upwards of $300 on ebay btw.
it was $30.
That's awesome, if you can deal with focusing manually with the tiny f/1.2 DoF.
yeah i got pretty good at manual focus with my 1.8fd, the 7x zoom and focus peaking on my camera really helps a lot. I want to show some pictures with it but i'm not really sure what to take pictures of. I'll try and get portraits of my friend later
Yay it came! It's a 7D by the way.

Need to sell my canon 30D now anyone in the UK want it? Roughly 25K shutter actuation.
How is the 30D compared to my 1000D?
The viewfinders bigger, and pentaprism. Sensor is bigger. Has a higher ISO.
1000D is 10.1MP, 30D is only 8.2.

I find it easier to focus with a shallower dof, it's harder for me to tell where my critical focus is if it's too broad. Plus, you don't necessarily have to shoot wide open all the time, having a 1.2 lens means that it'll be sharp as hell by 1.8, like as much as the 1.8 would be by f/2.8 or maybe even f/4.
Taking portraits at f/1.2 can mean focusing 1cm off can ruin the image, sadly.
Well i'm pretty good at focusing, the main problem is all the chromatic aberration I get at 1.2
this was back before Canon had their SSC coating, so wide open outside it's all like chroma as shit
and for some reason it doesn't stop down to 1.4 or 1.8, it goes straight from 1.2 to 2.

here is one of the less chroma'd images. I can kind of set the aperture between 1.2 and 2, but it isn't fixed on anything so I have no idea to what it actually is. Lens looks sharp as fuck at f2 though, so it's better than my 50mm in that regard.
I'd probably avoid shooting a portrait at 1.2 unless I'm standing back a distance, I can imagine even getting crisp focus on the eyes would result in a blurry nose
also does the aperture ring click once before reaching 2, or is it just a solid gap? some older lenses had unmarked halfstops all the way through
I'll take your advice, i just wanted to see what it was like all wide open. luckily i can get it to do infinity if I put it right at the 30ft mark, so I can take low light pictures of stuff far away pretty well!

Quite, i was trying to shoot with the 400mm @ 2.8 manually since for some reason my camera decided to not af. Shit was hard
5D mark ii with Panavision lenses. For those that don't know, Panavision manufactures the big $300,000 35mm movie cameras used in full-on-hollywood movies.

This is the type of camera those lenses normally go to.

I've seen someone do similar with a Canon box lens.

I was at IBC in Amsterdam last year and they also had those 5d's using panavision lenses. They let me use them, mounted on a shouldermount.
I felt like terminator
not going to like the name panavision sounds totally like a knock off brand

it sounds like one of those really old film technology things, like technicolor
because it presumably is
What
just the name of it. If i saw like a SLR sized lens that said Panavision i'd think it was some weird off brand
I was surprised you'd never heard of it, considering at the end of every movie ever it says "filmed with panavision cameras and lenses" or similar.

might relate, i dunno
With zoom lenses, is there generally an 'optimum' focal length that is the sharpest (like f8-ish for aperture), or does it vary on individual lenses?
not really
Omg. Local photography store is having a sale. 2000 CAD for a 5D Mk II, compared to th usual 2750 CAD. Body only though. So...tempted....

I have huge hands as well, it has advantages. Makes playing guitar easy but it makes anything I pick up look small... You know... dirty thoughts dirty thoughts dirty thoughts...
I need to pick up a 30mm sigma :( I am sick of my kit lens.
Guys, I need some help from you ( I know that some of you are quite handy with cameras)
I got an old battery grip for my 450d but I want to use it on my 550d. It fits but the camera won't turn on. I noticed that it will only turn on the when the battery cover is still connected but I have to remove it for the battery grip to fit. What do I gotta do to make this work?
