there is no such lens as an 18-45mm [editline]27th October 2011[/editline] maybe a 17-40 f/4 or 16-35 f/2.8?
Maybe the 18-55mm ? Seeing as that one is damn popular (because of it being a kitlense on the smaller models, I know that it's not a kitlense on the 7d and 5d)

[editline]October 28th 2011[/editline] This is completely unrelated, but I just wanted to share it with anyone it may potentially help out. I've spent a good while looking for a self-timed cable release to go with older mechanical SLR's. You'd think it would be as easy as Googling just that, but it took me quite awhile to eventually find an obscure forum post mentioning the Autoknips [release][t]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5182/5769465198_805cde4719.jpg[/t] [t]http://www.kameramuseum.de/zubehoer/ausloeser/autoknips-4.jpg[/t] [t]http://u1.ipernity.com/6/81/79/2128179.9429d77d.560.jpg[/t][/release] It's this charismatic little German device that screws right into where the (universally threaded) cable release would go. You wind it up and it slowly depresses a pin which triggers the shutter after a certain delay, usually 10-20 seconds depending on the model. There is also an off-camera version that will push the plunger on a separate cable release (pictured right). Apparently these were pretty standard accessories back in the day, and they are cheap and somewhat plentiful on everyone's favorite auction site. I think there would be a good market for a radio triggered pin-pushing system in the same form-factor as these things. Anyway, just posting to get the word out and maybe help anyone searching in the future.
They're all made by canon. the tilt-shift was a waste of money
There's no such things made by Canon, there's a 17mm tilt shift though.
They're all made by canon. the tilt-shift was a waste of money
No disrespect, but you seem to have too much gear to handle. So to say, very slight 'that guy' tendencies. You bought all this gear but don't know what it is/ didn't research what you needed before buying?

(except the goddamn tilt-shift) I know what each piece does, it's just some things are profitable and some things are fucking gimmicky tilt-shifts, and I don't do a lot of architecture photography. Also you don't know me. Sounds like you talk a lot of shit about the specifics and gear and overlook what matters, which is the product. The H4n is $300 and it's great, but you need an external shotgun if you're doing anything where you need more signal-before-noise. The Rode shotgun was really affordable, just $250, and the condenser came in a kit for $200.
How do you spend $2500 on a tilt shift and like $1000 on another and not remember what they are, lol. [editline]28th October 2011[/editline]
It's the 17. So my mom's birthday is in January and she's having a party and I wanted to take photos, the venue itself is relatively low light, and I don't want to use a flash. What lens would you guys recommend? I was thinking along the lines of a Nikkor 50mm 1.8, or something similar. I don't want to spend too much money on the lens though, as I already don't have too much to spend, but my dad said he might put some money towards it, so something between the $200-$500 range. I've got a Nikon D3000, 2 lenses: Kit 18-55mm and Nikkor 55-200mm.
50 1.8 shoot it wide 1/50th f/1.8 iso 800
50 1.8 shoot it wide 1/50th f/1.8 iso 800
So the 50mm would be a decent choice for a portrait?
a little tight on crop, but aye i use it in low light quite a bit
50mm works out to 80mm on a crop, which is pretty much the classic portrait length. Of course you can use any lens to take a portrait.
I don't get how I'm 'that guy' for posting my gear on a 'post your gear' thread, and then correcting you for making assumptions based on my two posts that literally revealed nothing about my character. I don't buy gear to show it off, I buy it to use it. I've earned every piece of gear that I own through my own hard work over the past two years. It sounds like you're just fucking jealous, as arrogant as that makes me sound. Grow up. [editline]28th October 2011[/editline]
So the 50mm would be a decent choice for a portrait?
50 is great, 80 is a bit more flattering. I haven't used it in a year and C. Fuck that lens, it was a mistake I've been unable to sell back. As far as the other lens, it also doesn't matter because knowing a 17 from an 18 makes no fucking difference when it's the only wide angle I have so I never think about it. I just call it the wide. I say, hey give me the wide. That's all I need to know because I don't sit at home all day polishing my gear and jerking it in the mirror, I don't have time because I have pictures to take and minecraft to play. Okay maybe sometimes I jerk it in front of the mirror.
I often buy cars but have no idea what I'm driving, because it only gets me from one place to another :v: I'm sorry to hear about your memory problems :[
a little tight on crop, but aye i use it in low light quite a bit
And if I can squeeze bit more extra cash, how much more beneficial will a 50mm 1.4 be? Also, do you think you could post a few example shots from the 50?
meh, you're bald, carry on
I fear I would look like a complete jackass bald. I haven't got the balls to shave my head because I don't know what shape my head has really.
i love my curly hair [editline]30th October 2011[/editline] btw, why does everyone on fp hate me?

I don't judge a book by it's cover. Right now I have only looked at the author of your book and his name is Steven Spielberg so this could go both ways.

Bit of advice please guys, I've got a NIKON D3100, but I've only got a kit lens, and well, the range of focal length is really small, and I was wondering if you could suggest a decent lens, pretty much an all rounder? And where to buy it from? I am a beginner, so I don't need anything too extravagant. Thanks in advance Edit: Wait, probably talking rubbish here, I'm really after something with a wider focal length.
