Also used the 30mm 1.4, didn't find it as great as I expected. Although it's a great lens I think I'd do a lot more with a 10-20
Didn't like it for that reason alone?
Now the picture just gets darker and the camera doesn't adjust the exposure to compensate. You need a fixed aperture zoom to fix this problem, or stop down to the minimum aperture when it's fully zoomed in.
Yeah it isn't perfect but I mainly intend to use it for everyday videos. It gets really annoying hear that clicking noise every time you zoom in or out.
I also had a Sigma 10-20 in my possession for a week. Funny thing about that lens is that it is usable on the 1D too. But i didn't like the lens at all in terms of sharpness. The lens had some backfocus issues and it wasnt sharp all over. The right side was sharper than the left side of the picture... I despise Sigma for their shitty Quality checking, and my 10-20 was a good example of it. Good thing i could sell it for a good price.
Mine's sharp and has no focus issues. If you bought one, and it has issues, you could just send it back, in the worst case scenario. I shoot wide open, a lot of the time, and it's more than sharp enough, even at corners. You can sharpen it in post, as well, without any artefacts or ugly problems, if you do it right.
I've got to agree, the one I tried seemed a little soft wide open but by no means terrible [editline]27th November 2011[/editline]
You aren't meant to judge picture quality on 100% crops, sir (unless you were planning on stalking someone with an ultra ultra wide angle?) much less crops from a 10-20 zoom.
it's the sharpness
If you're trying to find an ultra wide zoom lens with perfect sharpness all across the frame while wide open in a 100% crop maybe photography isn't for you.

You're also forgetting it's for landscapes, you'd be stopping down to f/9 or so anyway, and putting it on a tripod. If you use GND filters, you'd have really slow shutter times too, even multiple seconds if you're shooting a sunset. It's like picking a ticket in the lottery, you never know what you get. Ofcourse even the best brands have that, but the QC over at Sigma is so bad that you have a reasonably big chance to get a lens that is not 100 percent as it should be. It also can be that you also can get a good one straight away, but that's just what i mean with Quality Checking. If a store has a stock of 40 of the same sigma lenses (for example a 10-20mm) and half of them have problems or are of inferior quality optically, is that acceptable? I don't think so. There is a reason why Sigma is the most returned to store brand of them all. (and yes i can prove that)
What are you basing that 50% figure on?
What are you basing that 50% figure on?
That was just a example to illustrate what i meant. I don't know those figures. I only know that Sigma is the most returned to shop brand of them all.
If you do get a good one, you'll have an amazing lens :v:. Worth it, imo, since you can return it back to the store, no problems. Just because the company has a lot of returns won't affect your photography. Everyone I know with a 10-20mm loves it.
i am sure i will love it
I love it. I've printed shots I've taken wide open and hand held with it. It's so wide, you can hand hold it, with a steady hand, down to times like 1/8.
All my gear except for my 60d + lens. Unfortunately I can use most of those lens.

Wish I had $500 to spend on a lens. Instead, I'll be buying a microphone, tripod and a 50mm 1.8.

Wonder what Canon will do to match them.

Thinking of selling my 50mm Pentax-M f/4 Macro to buy a 50mm Pentax-M f/1.4, thoughts?
