Once I was on OPFOR for a counter-IED lane during Annual Training. We had this danish unit come to South Dakota for the exercise, and they asked us for a challenge. One of the encounters we set up, we had one guy walk down the road towards their lead vehicle with a CO2/powder bomb vest under his jacket. As the vehicles slowed to yell at him to clear out of the way, he opened his jacket and "detonated" his bomb vest (pull a spring-loaded needle back and it pops the CO2 canister, creating a puff of powder). We had a bunch of OPFOR on a hillside next to the road open fire, and the danish troops dismounted and returned fire while they tried to recover the lead vehicle and their wounded/dead soldiers. Meanwhile, I was on the other side of the road, hiding behind a log. After about a minute of intense shooting between the OPFOR and the Danes, I poked my head up.
Not a single soldier was pulling rear security.
I got up behind the log and opened fire, draining my entire mag of blanks. I watched as several soldiers jumped, a few swung around a bit too fast and lost balance, and I drew the attention of almost every soldier in that convoy. After a bit of back and forth, I spent the rest of my ammo and rose my weapon over my head in surrender. When I got to their convoy, they pushed me to the ground, placed a knee in the middle of my back, kicked my legs apart, and violently searched me.
I don't think I'll ever forget that moment though, when I startled the shit out of a convoy of Danish soldiers. OPFOR is legitimately one of the best times you'll have in the military.
