The internet: Wow BB-8 is pretty coo-
But wasn't BB-8 a physical prop that actually did scoot around on sand?
IIRC although it was a physical prop for some scenes, it only operated on a mat path, because it actually did skid uncontrollably on bare sand. For scenes where the perspective didn't allow that it was CGI. Tyson's still a pretentious asshole even though he was technically correct.
Anyways, have some well-aged gold.
Once I was on OPFOR for a counter-IED lane during Annual Training. We had this danish unit come to South Dakota for the exercise, and they asked us for a challenge. One of the encounters we set up, we had one guy walk down the road towards their lead vehicle with a CO2/powder bomb vest under his jacket. As the vehicles slowed to yell at him to clear out of the way, he opened his jacket and "detonated" his bomb vest (pull a spring-loaded needle back and it pops the CO2 canister, creating a puff of powder). We had a bunch of OPFOR on a hillside next to the road open fire, and the danish troops dismounted and returned fire while they tried to recover the lead vehicle and their wounded/dead soldiers. Meanwhile, I was on the other side of the road, hiding behind a log. After about a minute of intense shooting between the OPFOR and the Danes, I poked my head up.
Not a single soldier was pulling rear security.
I got up behind the log and opened fire, draining my entire mag of blanks. I watched as several soldiers jumped, a few swung around a bit too fast and lost balance, and I drew the attention of almost every soldier in that convoy. After a bit of back and forth, I spent the rest of my ammo and rose my weapon over my head in surrender. When I got to their convoy, they pushed me to the ground, placed a knee in the middle of my back, kicked my legs apart, and violently searched me.
I don't think I'll ever forget that moment though, when I startled the shit out of a convoy of Danish soldiers. OPFOR is legitimately one of the best times you'll have in the military.
Super fekkin late, but when I was in AIT, my squad was OPFOR, laying an ambush for another squad. We decided to have me go prone near a tree, cover me in leaves, and then place a log that was already there ontop of me. Enemy squad does their patrol, reacts to contact, wipes out my squad except me. As they're all huddled up together to assess their wounded, I creep out of my position and the drill sergeant infront of me has a look of "oh yes" on their face. Taking my M4, I creep around and ambush them. Of course, we weren't given blanks because New Army and budget cuts or some shit, so after yelling Bang! Bang! Bang for a minute or two, the drill sergeants went ahead and declared the enemy squad dead since nobody knew how to react. Great fun, until everyone we all got smoked for an hour straight since not a single person picked up their weapon to return fire.
There was also this one time we were doing some sort of training that I can't remember and I was given a huge ass (fake) bomb to carry around with me. The looks on peoples' faces as they tried to decide how to react was amazing.

He's a pretentious asshole for pointing out a slight inaccuracy in a scifi movie?
There were three different BB-8 props for TFA that had different uses. For scenes involving BB-8 rolling around, they had a rig that would just push a BB-8's body around, and they would digitally remove the rig and the operator. BB-8's head was attached to the rig, so by tilting the rig the operator would be able to control where the head was.

I can't find the specific behind the scenes footage on youtube, but it's the same idea as this:
