Alright, I'll spare you all a rant about how I hate lincoln, because I've got a theory.[sp]
Universes 3 and 4 are near exact copies of universes 1 and 2, respectively. When the observers stopped peter from existing, they created universe 3 by making that decision. The entire season so far has been following universe 3, where walter is a shut-in and they have never seen observers. Universe 4 is all buddy-buddy with universe 3, much like 1 and 2. The new shapeshifters probably would come from a universe 5.[/sp]
Was it worth the wait? Haven't seen it yet.
