That's actually incredibly interesting. Is he still alive? Do you know his opinions of the Chinese civil war? What he thinks of China today, Taiwan today? Its very interesting to me that your grandfather fought for the Kuomintang. Very rare perspective on the time period.
Before the war began, in the late '20s/'30s, he was in the Chinese Navy learning to be a submariner. He was sent to Germany to learn submarine warfare (the Germans were in the process of selling the Chinese U-Boats, Me-109s, He-111s, and Panzer tanks) when the Japanese invaded China. The Germans then sent him and his other naval officer friends back to China, and because they ended up not having submarines, the military let them choose where they wanted to go; he went infantry. He died in 2001, so I didn't really get to personally talk to him much about his experiences in this war, but from I've seen in photographs and what my dad told me (since he did get around to telling my dad and uncle about his exploits), he fought for the Nationalist Chinese during the war, toting a Kar98k and donning full German web gear and stalhelm helmet (the Chinese Army during WWII used German weapons and equipment for much of the war, until the US really got around to supporting them, in case you didn't know) Since he was part of the Nationalists from before the war, he continued to fight with the KMT after the war. He said his primary reason for picking sides was because the KMT was kind of the "continuation of the Qing Dynasty", and the remains of the ancient Chinese empire and whatnot. Basically, he had a gut feeling that if the Communists took over China, they would destroy Chinese culture and attempt to change/alter/get rid of Chinese traditions. In fact, he was one of the military officers that convinced Chiang Kai-Shek to take as many national treasures from royal palaces as possible before the Communists got to them. Those treasures that were saved by the retreating Kuomintang still exist today and can be seen at the Palace Museum in Taiwan. Funny thing is, he was right. Mao's Cultural Revolution did exactly what he feared. The treasures that weren't saved were destroyed or lost, and now to actually see individual items/weapons/sculptures whatnot from Ancient China one needs to make a trip to Taiwan, not China. My grandpa was always more of a historian than a fighter, so he felt that preserving history was very important. He fought for the Kuomintang not because he agreed with every single decision that they had ever made, but because he wanted to preserve cultures and traditions.
I learned a lesson today. Don't jump off a five foot stage when you have a muscle disease or else you'll cramp up like crazy for a good half hour. But at least I still managed to escape my prom before I had to fight my way out through a clusterfuck of couples having slow dances.
My grandpa has some cool stories. He told me a story of a friend he had who was in some kind of recon squad. They went out on a mission. They ran into some trouble, and after some intense fighting, this guy blacks out. The next thing he knows, he's in the hospital. What happened was that he and his squad hit some VC or some NVA or something. He was the only one to make it out, but he took 17 gun shots and a bayonet stab. I got to meet this man, and he showed me all the scars. It's a miracle he's alive.
LRRP long range reconnaissance patrol vietnam stories are fucked
My uncle was in the MACV SOG. He didn't go on so called "black ops"
FAG
He sat in half way distances to bases (because radios didn't reach all the way back to base) so he can give the command messages. He did see combat because the NVA knew this.
Nope

My uncle was in Nam. His helocopter crashed killing all but him and 1 other man, who suffered major head trauma, my uncle was paralyzed from the knees down and he dragged both himself and the other survivor under a tree and hid them until they were recovered by an American patrol the next day. Also, my uncle's best friend "Cherokee" got lost in the jungle by himself for over 30 days. When he finally stumbled back into an American camp, he'd lost over 40 pounds, was covered in blood, and was completely delirious. Upon discharge he went to a job in Tennessee where he may or may not have killed someone in a barfight before fleeing the state and returning to Michigan.
I reproduce asexually

My uncle flew A1-E Skyraiders during Vietnam. He got his landing gear shot to shit from ground fire and had to make an emergency landing. He landed safely at a friendly air field, and I have all the pictures of the plane with the shredded propeller and my uncle being lifted out. He also has VHS tapes of his guncam. I have never seen it, but I heard he dropped a lot of napalm. He himself doesn't like to talk about it.
We'll never quite know what my uncle did, but he had a story he liked to tell where an important person met his end with some explosives he placed. When he died from cancer there were a number of green berets at his funeral ad he apparently had over a million dollars stashed away in investments and bank accounts.
The only family member who I'm aware of ever being in the military is a cousin who's in the Canadian Navy. My family is boring as fuck.
My cousin came back from his second tour in Afghanistan and is now in rehab for opium because the Afghani civilians are lacing food and other provisions with it prior to giving it to US troops. The Army apparently also gives our soldiers copious amounts of amphetamines to keep them awake on patrols
My great grandpa was in ww1
