I'll give it 1 more year, and then they'll either can the 3DS brand of make a follower.
They can't just keep developing for it forever. As mentioned above, it's been six years. All the good games have come out already. Most of the stuff they showed for it on that recent direct looked pretty forgettable tbh.
Only 3DS game I am looking forward to is the Strange Journey port
Took em long enough to make a 2DS variant with the New 3DS quality of life features
I noticed Nintendo have been pushing a lot of kids games on the 3DS for about the last year or so, I'm guessing the sales are strong enough to justify keeping it alive. If you haven't got a 3DS yet I would encourage giving one a try. They're a great little handheld with a library that doesn't have the shovelware problem the DS had (Plus it can play DS games!). Haven't got any new 3DS games for about a year but I still use my New 3DS quite a bit as a music player and even play around with making music on it via the Korg apps you can get. [editline]28th April 2017[/editline] I would recommend getting a New 3DS rather than a regular one (if they still sell those), the New models (as in the "New 3DS/New 3DS XL", not A new 3DS) feel a lot more durable than the originals. [editline]28th April 2017[/editline] god damn it why did they have to call it the New 3DS my post reads like it went through a translator.
I might consider getting it after they announce a new Monster Hunter game, I have the Switch so I hope that comes on that, if not then eeugghhhh another DS here I come. My New 3DS XL movement analog registers my movements only like half the time so my MH games are near unplayable.
I actually think 3DS/2DS has a couple more years. This revision in my opinion confirms it. 3DS still sells well. I don't see them having a reason to make a new handheld when they have the Switch but like I said before the 3DS still sells so they have no reason to stop the 3DS/2DS line either. And damn that design is pretty sleek. Wonder if it will have the issue where the buttons and stuff touch the screen causing scratching like before, though looks like most of the buttons are in the bezel area.
Nintendo still trying to push that "normal people playing video games in public" angle.
What do you mean?
Looks good, I just wish Nintendo had a survival horror series or two in their IP library.
What do you mean?
Video games are for nerds and neckbearded manchildren and you're only supposed to play them in your mother's basement.
STILL no 2nd circle pad!? God fucking damnit Nintendo, I fucking hate that piece of shit C nub. That gripe aside, I like this. As someone who NEVER uses the 3D functionality, I wish this was out before I got the New 3DS.
Very few games use the "2nd Circle Pad," really. And even then, it's not that big of a deal, imo.
Video games are for nerds and neckbearded manchildren and you're only supposed to play them in your mother's basement.
That's what it sounds like they're saying but I didn't want to put words in their mouth if they meant something else.
This is most likely just so that they can push a hardware revision which fixes some flaws in the ARM9 Bootrom, notably Sighax as it allows for the signing of arbitrary NATIVE_FIRM's with a single universal signature due to how poorly they implemented ASN-1 in the (N)3DS/2DS bootrom.
Lol wut? If they really wanted to patch the bootrom then they'd probably just silently start manufacturing a new revision instead of designing a whole new variation of the console
Lol wut? The 3DS's security is so shitty all around that it would be pretty ridiculous to push an entirely new hardware line just to patch some random low-level vuln. Plus, most people aren't even using it to the extent a higher level exploit wouldn't be able to achieve.
By that logic they also wouldn't have bothered releasing every system update after 9.7 or whenever they just started patching exploits rather than adding features. Changing the bootrom would also allow them to "patch" A9LH if they so desired. Unless someone is keeping something pretty huge private, no Sighax and no A9LH means no cold boot persistence, which is a major usability draw for a lot of people. There are also other motivations, for example fixing the vuln which actually allows you to dump the protected half of boot9 in the first place. Also swapping out all the bootrom keys since those are going to eventually become public knowledge once someone other than derrek dumps it.
Not gonna lie, this might actually finally get me to buy a 3DS/2DS now. I've never had one for the life of the system, due to the 3D making it a bit too pricey for me (and essentially killing battery life), and the 2DS being an absolutely terrible slab of a machine. Even though the 3DS is probably going to die out in the next year or so, I'd imagine. Oh well.

Apparently the New 3DS XL has 3.5-7 hours without 3D, depending on the game compared to the 2DS which has 3.5-5.5 hours. I imagine that's just because it's older than the New 3DS XL. Now I'm curious to see if this New 2DS is going to have the same life as the N3DS XL or if it'll be longer.
Very few games use the "2nd Circle Pad," really. And even then, it's not that big of a deal, imo.
Smash uses it, and lets be real the 3ds/2ds is a smash-box for most people. People upgraded from 3ds to the "new" 3ds just for the circlepad just for smash.

They either play it on Wii U, or play Pokemon on 3DS.
I still play it sometimes. Mostly because I'm too lazy to set up the Wii U though. :v:
Same here. It's faster for me to just play Smash 3DS for some quick rounds.
Very few games use the "2nd Circle Pad," really. And even then, it's not that big of a deal, imo.
I find it essential for playing monster hunter but that's not my point. I feel like the 3ds games in general would benefit from having a 2nd, maybe albeit slightly smaller circle pad. Because the thing that's there is an abomination. Either that or mine was very poorly made as it fell apart after a few months of use. Luckily a psp cap can serve as a half decent replacement but I'd still prefer a 2nd dedicated circle pad. It doesn't have to be as big as the first.
Easier for everyone to take their 3DS to college/a convention than a WiiU.
i'm led to believe anyone who's going to a smash 4 tournament will be using a gc controller. it's funny to see nintendo go full circle and say "fuck it, let's just make a stronger DS."
Ugh, I wish Nintendo would just drop the 3DS already. They need to go all in on the Switch right now.
They already said that they will support it through 2018 and it's supposed to be the main step-in for children to get into their consoles before they (the children and others) switch to the Switch.
Glad to see they learned that the slab design was stupid.
That wasn't stupid. It was a good design. The point of the original 2DS was to be sturdy, since it was marketed at kids. Which is also why it doesn't have 3D and the slab design was less expensive to produce.
