Impossible. Which also makes this debate impossible.
Which is why I put normal in quotation marks.
It's hard to appreciate people when they make fartjokes and act generally immature for their age.
How old are we talking here?
I think a more appropriate title for this thread would've been something like "is being considered normal by the standards of the modern society something to strive for" or something to that extent.
Terrible title. :]
How old are we talking here?
16-year olds.
Terrible title. :]
I know, that was just a crude example. At least with that title we could've already concluded what this "normal" means. Now it's all just pondering about what is to be normal or what defines it.
I don't know what I am. What I know is that I'm a human being and my life has value.
How interesting.
Being yourself is a good thing.

Normal is obviously different for everyone. Whoever isn't like themselves, is abnormal to them. See?
So I personally think we can pass the discussion of the definition since we will never agree on it.

If we want to discuss a topic, shouldn't we all have a common understanding of the problem? In this case, if we don't know what "normal" is, how can we have a base for discussion?

Do you not understand how people are stereotyped?
In your personal life be whatever you want to be. Just don't expect everyone to accept you when you talk about it in public.
Do you not understand how people are stereotyped?
Yes, I do. But as you said, "Normal" is different for everyone. Everyone has a different definition of what they think "Normal" means. I think it would benefit the discussion if we all had a common definition, one that we can agree on. And then we can discuss if being "normal" is a good thing.
Personally I think Wikipedia has a very good definition that's free of cultural influence.

By the way, I think this is a very interesting topic.

Right, I don't want to choose a personality and stick with it. That's pure dullness. There would be nothing to discover and nothing building into a bigger idea.
Then again, I don't want to be in a closed box and be alone trying to gain insight without pondering within these groups.

Come to think of it, our little argument here is already a good example of discussing if being normal is good :v:
I'm cynical as fuck with people. I look at somebody my age and listen to them for 2 minutes an immediately I can judge if I like them or not.

That seems like the opposite of me, I'm very welcoming to meet new people and don't judge them too much on their first impression towards me. I find it silly to judge people that quickly, so I have to be around them more before I decide I actually dislike someone. Unless they happen to make a ridiculously bad first impression.

Either he's lying or clearly an example of a closed box personality.

Not necessarily, in public the only thing people care about is your actions. Normal day to day conversation can only give people a fraction of people's personalities.
When you walk out that door, you become someone else. Whose with me?

Normal is safe. If you stray from the normal, you can get people who are absolute shits or are awesome. Normal is neither good nor bad, but is still a preferable state in many occasions.
If someone had the option of being a normal, not very exceptional person or their actual dickish self, normal would be preferred.

I am the most normal person in the normal thread. It would seem something extraordinary, but it isn't.

You're slightly obsurd actually.
[editline]27th September 2011[/editline]
Actually you're the most convincingly abnormal person in this thread, you deserve the prize.
People tying not to be "normal" are just being pretentious, and I generally find them annoying as fuck, even though they might be nice persons. I'm not "normal" because I have a pretty big interest in computers, but in the end I'm normal as fuck, as people are to me as people are to "normal" people. A person wearing beforementioned weird cloths and coloured hair is normal as well, they're just trying not to fit in, and that's simply because they're trying to fit into another group. People who are going around murdering people because they think it's fun, are not normal.

If you're so normal, could you please define what "Normal" means? Because I'd like to know.
There is really no such a thing as normal, since no one is normal, instead everyone is unique in their own way. Of course, you can be in many sub-cultures or fandoms, etc. Or do anything. What I dislike about this is when people tell me to be normal when there really is no such a thing as normal. It's an abstract concept where normal could mean the majority, which I still don't really get. And people don't know my normal.
the point is, there is no such a thing as a normal or ordinary person.
Trying to think about this broke my mind.
I find it hard to define normal, even in the most basic sense. People all have their own quirks but can get grouped into social groups easily, thereafter acquiring the traits of that group over time either through personality changes due to peer pressure, exposed to different points of view or whatever.
Thinking like that would mean anybody outside of that group would be abnormal even if abnormal and normal people shared traits.
I do know people who have strived to be normal for reasons even unknown to them, people having 9-5 jobs even having kids simply because it’s the “done thing” but unable to justify why.
I’d find it interesting to see a survey from just asking random people if they were normal or not, crossed with somebody else judging if the asked person for normal or not.
If you're so normal, could you please define what "Normal" means? Because I'd like to know.
Normal is not any one state, it is the average of those around you toned down. It is something that fits in, but doesn't really impress anyone. A background character, someone expendable, the person who fits in but doesn't really contribute anything other than their presence.
There is no constant normal, but it does exist.
On the subject of normal, what about perfect? can anything or anyone really be "perfect"?
No-one can ever know what perfection really means. Yet, it is staring at us our entire lifetime.
I'm cynical as fuck with people. I look at somebody my age and listen to them for 2 minutes an immediately I can judge if I like them or not.

I'm cynical enough to be a realist
your cynical enough to be a judgmental socially screwed twit
It's not so much as what is "normal" all the time, it's more of what is normal at the time. A lot of people will change like the weather depending on who they are with, so is it the question of "Is it okay to be normal?" Or is it something else?
No. Normal people are boring and annoying. Scary weird people can sometimes be fun. But it depends what type of weird they are.
