In your personal life be whatever you want to be. Just don't expect everyone to accept you when you talk about it in public.
I'm looking at you ponies.
.
There is no "definition" of normal. As said previously in this thread, it all depends on your own view.
surely, in order to answer your question. we have to define what normal is? that's not something i think can be done, really. what's normal, and what's not is hugely subjective.
so personally, i'd say it can't be a good or bad thing, as there is no such thing as "normal"
Nobody can really be normal, because there is no official definition of what normal is.
Normality means to be equal to the majority. It doesn't say anything regarding to the quality of the actions.
Normality cannot be given moral worth.
being unique is lonely

Please, none of that in this discussion. This is about individuality.
being unique is lonely
not really, not if you have people that do one thing that you do.
The desire to be normal is a huge thing in modern culture, but it's also bullshit. There are just so many different aspects of western culture actively trying to make people all question what normal is.
Are super models and actresses the norm? No, but we all get the idea that they are from the media. This is unfair and again, bullshit. Are hollywood, or even filmic romances real? No, but we're all told that's what we're supposed to find. You name a subject, and the popular media of the time is trying to divide you in a thousand ways on what to think "normal" is. In the end, we're all so unsure of what we're supposed to be, we're all just mad that we're not.
But who cares, being "normal" is over rated. The most average and normal people you meet you'll forget in minutes, its the ones who stand out with character and personality, oddity and difference. People who make an impact on you are most certainly not normal and are not even going to pretend to be in most cases.
I'll take being me over being normal any day.

This, exactly this.

Well said.
I'd like for someone to define "Normal".
Because it's all defined in every person. Nobody has the same view on what "Normal" is.
It's a setting on a dishwasher or washing machine, or a difficulty setting.
Sure as hell must be better than being a furry with a (insert all my fetishes here) fetish.
I'd give anything to be normal
In a word, nope.
If everyone followed the norm humanity would just stagnate. It's dissenting opinions - normally held by eccentric weirdos - that allow humanity to progress. I had a politics seminar on JS Mill, and in his On Liberty he discusses the importance of dissenting opinion. To be honest it's basically exactly the same argument as Elmer the Elephant. Fucking love that book. Live your life by it.

It's quite funny though; by default I think a lot of people (unless they look weird) as being normal, but as I get to know them more, I absolutely always discover they're really not all that normal at all. Can't think of one person I've known well and consider normal.

Too bad: by asking 'is being normal a good thing' you've already asked a question of morality.
However I'd disagree with him and say that individuality does have instrumental moral worth.
I'd rather feel and think and question the majority of the group I'm supposed to be going along with. Of course it seems the only thing that people in high school ever want to do is conform. I mean it's like sheep in a flock or something.
I think it's good to be "normal", in the typical American sense.
Hell, I make myself look like an idiot just so people don't just see me as a boring kid they don't want to talk to. In fact, making an ass out of myself is how I made most of my friends, so that's why I don't want to be "normal".
I think it's good to be "normal", in the typical American sense.
Explain why, seriously, you've said this shit in other threads and I don't see how being the "typical american" even in the ideal state, is so good.
I like the American culture, and the way genders are in that country, for the most part.
I'm a fucking social conservative bro you know I don't think rationally

You are something else.
Funny how expressing the opinion held by the vast majority of Americans is considered "something else" on this forum.
Related, if you defend a semi-conservative belief, even one not even remotely extreme in that country, you are a complete extremist on this forum. It's not out of persecution, but rarity.

The whole country is "something else" by that definition, and it may well be. Homophobia seems almost ingrained with the rights social views.

It's because Social Conservatism is complete nonsense.
Whatever you say.
See! I told you you could never talk any sense into me. I'm just terrible.
I have no voice or personality of my own--seriously.
My "normal" voice is a flat, deep, and monotone voice--like a robot.
I just imitate voices to try to fit my needs--right now, I sound like The Cloak from the video The Cloak by Filmcow.
My personality, can't really do anything about it--It's just a bit hateful. I hate people.
The only real way I see "normal":
1. You don't want to go on a killing spree.
2. You have no desire to eat people.
3. You can do basic things like tie shoes, drive a car, etc.
That's really it. Personality wise, we're all strange in our own ways, and we all have our own quirks.
For example: I peel the edges off of lunch meat.

It's not really due to rarity; it's just that most conservative belief is almost entirely morally unjustifiable.
Being "normal" is what I try to avoid. I'm not saying that I try to be retarded, but more a case of being exceptionally myself.
In life you need to create your own personal image in an effort to make yourself more desirable all-round and set yourself apart from the next generic person.
Of course, being "different" will always bring mixed opinions, which means that there's always going to be people that don't like you for it. But at the end of the day, if someone doesn't like you for who you are, then they aren't worth your time anyway. You'll find that, as long as you're not a douche, there will always be more people that like you rather than hate you.
People strive to be normal,
They do? That's not the way I see it.
I've actually noticed a strange obsession with weirdness and eccentricity.
Way I see it, if you look around, you'll see a lot of relatively normal people using any opportunity they get to shout about how weird, strange or crazy they are. A lot of people (including myself), practically see "You're crazy!" as a compliment.
Also consider some of the very popular fictive characters. A lot of such characters, like Jack Sparrow, The Doctor and The Joker are popular because they are eccentric or "crazy".
And yet people still get upset and angry when people do things that are out of the ordinary. It seems to me that people have a sort of love-hate relationship with craziness?
it's all about being the "sleeper" crazy person
you know, you seem normal, until people start to get to know you.
