Nice mate, so much good stuff from Peru. [editline]7th February 2012[/editline] Ninja'd :P [editline]7th February 2012[/editline] Holy shit Killuah! This is the first time I have ever seen a picture of a frozen waterdrop. Thank you so much for liberating me of my photographic ignorance with brand new ideas! Now I can start my journey on the road to recovery. I mean seriously, who ever thought to just stick their lens up to an icy twig at minimum focusing distance? Brilliant. Sorry, I'm too caught up in my own circlejerk to understand real art, could you possibly explain it so [del]people[/del] dumb hipster posers like me can understand your message? This could be the first step in getting me to stop taking the pictures I take, like some untrained chimp repeatedly throwing its feces at a monitor. If you can't though, I understand. You're a busy artist at work, and I just appreciate that you even took the time to acknowledge our forum. Anyway, A+ work, have a medal!
Am I missing something here? Seems like an uncharacteristically dickish post from Bopie... Pick, what is it you actually do? You seem to go on quite a lot of adventures and mini expeditions, is it just self funded travel? Is it a university thing, or some sort of charity organisation? I'm just curious, love your work as always.
Man I wish I understood why you all find that comment funny
It's an example of the circlejerking between people who buy pro bodies and lenses as ego extensions. Flickr is full of people who pay thousands to get the highest resolution, cleanest and sharpest images of boring stuff, thinking it's good because it was taken on something so expensive. They are people who praise bad photos like, this just, to get profile views and positive feedback back from the person they praised. [t]http://i.imgur.com/nLv9n.png[/t] Note how this was taken on a D3S, and is very far from anything "fantastic".
Yes you are missing something :v: Killuah has a reputation of opposing the general concepts of "good" photography on this forum (not implying they are wrong or bad). He assumes that because he does not grasp the concept of many photos posted here, that they are thoughtless and bland and taken by generic hipsters. However, we also assume the same thing of him, as most of us can't or refuse to grasp the ideas behind his photos, labeling them as generic "that guy" stuff. It kind of reminds me of that "Frank Grimes" episode of The Simpsons, where a character described as Groening as (paraphrasing) "As if a person from our world was dropped into Springfield". Springfield functions normally and safely on its own, and because Frank Grimes is from our much more rational world, he is driven insane in the fact that the city is still running (e.g. Homer, an utter oaf, in charge of the most vital safety job in the town), and inevitably kills himself. We'll probably never get along because we come from such polar opposite concepts of photography, so I choose to, and encourage you all to, ignore him. He will most likely tire of not having anyone forcing their views on him to force his own views on. Let's just accept that we all have different views on what photography "is".

It it just me, or shooting during winter is way less fun. Everything is the same shade of grey.
Kris that photo is excellent. very good candid shot
A photo is made up of all its components, one being the composition yes, but another being the subject matter. So it deserves equal criticism as the rest of the photo. We're not putting him down, we're giving him constructive advice to try and better his photography. And i for one am not looking to pursue a career in photo journalism, and regardless, i don't think someones friend spitting is exactly journalism material.
you guys aren't putting him down? "That isn't even facebook worthy" bitch please, that's like the most insulting thing you can say to someone taking up photography okay maybe "not even myspace worthy" edit: yes i'm aware i'm paraphrasing
Inzalonus, stop already. The Facebook remark.. which was: "But yeah those pics are for facebook not facepunch, and even then i'd question their belonging on facebook" was a direct reply to him saying that they are silly photos and he is only posting them to prove he goes outside. See.. they are self proclaimed silly photos, hence why I don't believe they belong in this thread. and the "even then i'd question facebook" comment was just because I find the spitting one disgusting. My view on that hasnt changed. It's just not something people want to see. Bitch, it's not the most insulting thing. Go drink some fucking concrete and harden up, you're taking it worse than the lad who posted them. edit: FUCK, why did I take the bait again. It was almost dead. Apologies to everyone who has to read shit about that photo again.
-madeupmyownmindsnip- New page, everyone take a breath of fresh air...
I love fresh air. I must say the quality of the photographs in this thread is really picking up. Some very good shots here, and quite a few with a lot of potential. Here are some shots taken the other day: All of them are taken with the Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 AF-D, which I recently acquired What do you think?
I haven't shot much film, but what happened to picture 1? Is it a focus thing, or did someone manhandle your roll?
Yeah, the Peruvian photo lab didn't know how to treat a negative properly. I've got a few shots which are almost beyond repair (I might post one a bit later on and see what you guys can do with the image).
Pick, what is it you actually do? You seem to go on quite a lot of adventures and mini expeditions, is it just self funded travel? Is it a university thing, or some sort of charity organisation? I'm just curious, love your work as always.
Cheers mate. I guess it's from a few different things. I study Wildlife Conservation at Uni. So that in itself is a fairly global topic. It's a goal-based discipline which usually requires travel to places which are in need of help. So I'm often on trips around the country (just recently went to Jersey) and further afield. The Peru expedition was a trip organised by my department to better our skills in data collection/field work (with the wider aim of using the info to help monitor the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve in Peru). I was studying understory birds (the birds that fly in the lower canopy of any type of forest); catching them in mist-nets, tagging them, measuring, weighing etc. Using this data you can estimate population numbers, presence etc. I'm writing up my results in my dissertation which is due in two months. My parents are both Australian (I currently live in Kent, England), but I've lived on and off in both countries, so that would explain my photos coming from both hemispheres. And my fairly recent trips to Morocco and Berlin were just short trips away with my girlfriend. And lord no, am I never going to get sucked into that 'charity' work which offers travel. They make a buck from naive 'gap-year' students who don't end up actually making too much difference for their chosen organisation. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule (I've heard Coral Cay Conservation does a pretty good job) - but the more I study, the more I realise how they just slot into an 'experience' holiday where people kid themselves into thinking they're doing some good because it's under the visor of 'volunteering' when in fact you're paying often hundreds of thousands of pounds for the experience. It's bloody annoying though. I don't want to live in an impoverished world and I feel obliged to do something about it. When I tell people I'm studying Wildlife Conservation they always respond with "Oh, that's interesting!" or "That's different!", but then I try and explain it's because I care, not because it's some quirky or different subject. I actually give a shit about the planet that I live on. I almost decided to study photography at Uni. But I'm glad I didn't. I've got real-world, current, practical and inter-disciplinary knowledge tucked away in my brain about everything from biology and ecology to politics and law. I think I've progressed enough as a photographer in my time at Uni. Even if I'm lacking on a few of the minor technical details (which I aim to spend a bit of time after my studies focusing on myself), I feel confident enough with a camera to achieve most things I'm interested in photographically. I just really hope that one day, I'll be able to link these two things. I want to see the world (in a selfish way before we bloody fuck it all up and it changes beyond all recognition) and make some sort of change or difference and document with a camera as I go - Once I figure out my own way of doing it. /rant

Hey guys, I just enrolled into a photography study for atleast half a year. Our first assignment is to choose a photographer whose work you appreciate, pick one photo from them to recreate and then try to shoot a series of photos in the same style as them. I'm probably going to pick one(or more) of you guys
And now, some sunset photographs. I love taking these.
