Seen as I'm getting no response in the Gear Discussion, is an Umbrella or a Softbox a better choice for portraits? I take pictures at the school so Prom is coming up. I will mainly be taking group pictures but I do have couples requests to deal with. I know I'll need a wireless trigger system too, but there's plenty cheap ones available. I've only got one Flash Unit though. [editline]13th May 2012[/editline]
not really creative, but ahhh i love using my new macro lens. like holy shit, i didn't realize how convenient it was to have one. macro lenses are the shit, am going to use this all the time for ebay stuff now. this is the ebay picture for my 17mm lens (seems to be a bit of novelty), never really taken pictures of products well, this was my first attempt. going to have to get a more white sheet backdrop for next time, but i think this one looks a little less stock so it's for sure the product.
Get a green or blue sheet, any strong colour should do really. Then you want to remove the background so its just white. Your other option is a Small photograph studio thing.

i'd love to shoot raw except for the fact that my 1st generation sony camera only accept compactflash so with the amount of shit i take i usually fill up the whole card in like an hour
A $40 16gb CF card will hold about 500 shots with RAW + JPG at max settings - in a 5D2. I'm sure you can a find reasonably priced CF card large enough for your purposes.

I want to shoot raw but i can't afford photoshop and i dont think GIMP process's them :(
would it be daft of me to suggest why not just pirate it, buy it when you can afford it
I want to shoot raw but i can't afford photoshop and i dont think GIMP process's them :(
The above option aside, you could use a student discount to make it cheaper, and alternatively, you could purchase Lightroom instead. It's significantly better for a photographer with no need for heavy photomanipulation. It's also a whole hell of a lot cheaper.
