[QUOTE=Samuka97;36241852]Got my hands on a DLSR for the first time. Both shots were taken at night with a flash at 800 ISO, 1/8 shutter speed and f3.5 aperture. How'd I do?

Both are rather static in regards to value, the second one is underexposed and very uninteresting. Shooting at night really isn't in you're best interest with subject matter such as that. Use the sun as your tool.

Too dark, his head blends in with the background. It would look nice if it was a little brighter and there was more contrast between the subject and background.

Went to my counties environmental center with my girlfriend. 3rd time I've used my camera, I think I'm getting a bit better. I want to figure out how to make color a bit more vibrant, and the darks to be darker without underexposing too much. This was the first time I've ever tried taking macro shots as well, I'm still getting used to the camera as well.

Criticism and advice is greatly appreciated! I'm taking a 5 week trip to Ecuador in 3 weeks and I'm really trying to learn my camera and how to take better pictures.
nothing really pops in the first one, its dull and a bit soft
its a nice subject, but nothing exceptional
the second one has really weird framing, and its hard to tell what the subject is
the third one lacks focus, I dont really know what part is supposed to be interesting to me, it feels a little to close
the fourth one also just feels boring to me, youre a little far from your subject this time, and its covered by all these boring trees
the last one is washed out and pretty boring as well
you need to work on finding more interesting things to take shots of
your technical skills are all there, you just need to put them to good use with your composition

Thanks, this is exactly the kind of stuff I want to hear. I noticed that a lot of my pictures looked washed out. I'm not sure why this is, my girlfriends Canon Rebel brought out colors a lot bette, especially in macro shots. I want to find more interesting places around here, I know they're there I just have to find them. It's also kind of hard to get away from these damn trees, they make everything so much darker and add so much clutter to my pictures. Maybe it'd be worth coming back to this place in the winter and getting pictures of the architecture. I'll try looking through the forum to get better ideas for subjects and I'll definitely work more on framing.
Do you think playing with white balance would help? I'm not entirely sure how to work white balance and would love any tips on how to start getting better with it. Most my pictures from that day make it look like it was cloudy when it really wasn't.
yes you should edit your photos if you think the colors aren't vivid enough, that's a given.

Speaking of compositions, do you guys have any recommendations for tutorials a beginner should read to understand them a little better? All I really know about is the rule of thirds and nothing else.
Hey all!
Cheesy introduction:
I haven't really been around these forums for that long and I've mostly just posted in the 3D-art thread. I've been reading this thread for a while from time to time though and most of you seem friendly enough so I thought I might post some stuff I've shot.
I've not been taking pictures very actively so I still have loads to learn so I'd be glad to get some critique or comments overall.
Here's a few from last summer.

That's a pretty huge age gap between siblings.

Tried some heavy B&W to make it more interesting. Don't think it worked, but it was fun to play around with.
B&W is good when the subject is clear and stands out from the background, either by high contrast or blurred background. Neither are really visible in your last shot.

Agreed. Far too busy. Methinks I'll take it down and try something else with it.
