I love love love the composition and colour here. The dull moody backdrop and the bright umbrella really set the scene. The second one is a bit uninspired and feels kind of plain. I think that's because I find the structure in the middleground detracts from the subject and backdrop.
Thank you, that's exactly what I was hoping to do with the first one. The second one I liked less and less as I looked at it. I think I'll try having a go at this one with the same mindset as the first

now that i've gotten through the photography exam I should have some content soon there's been some really good stuff in the past few pages, but also I feel a fair bit of mediocre, I don't want to sound mean but some stuff seems pretty uninspired, thing is I know I can't do any better myself as of now anyway, fucking exam stress getting to me

I feel I really could've done better because there's not really much going on in it.

My only advice is that you maybe could have framed it differently in either one of two ways: Either by removing the shoulder and chin of the figure on the right, or include it more in the photograph as a frame for the drummer.

The first one is great, don't know how to explain it but it does have an atmosphere to it. The second one, not so much; too much black space.
Clouds after a storm + Silver Efex makes for some damn dramatic black and white landscapes. I loooove it. Bandwidth alert! So yesterday, I pulled the SD-card out of our shitty point-and-shoot and took it with me to a local store, after school. I kindly asked one of the coworkers to put the battery in a Canon 600D so I could take some photos. He obliged and I put the SD-card in and there I was, shooting Canon's newest Digital SLR. Hurrah, my first shot with a DSLR ever! [t]http://filesmelt.com/dl/IMG_0901-s.jpg[/t] It was only after this that my intelligence kicked in and told me that the bastards still had the lens set to MF with IS off. So here is the revised shot. [t]http://filesmelt.com/dl/IMG_0905-s.jpg[/t] Using the Canon 600D with standard 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II was some fun. I really liked how fast it responded, but in retrospect that's no wonder considering all I've ever used are shitty compact cameras. Don't have any more pictures because the camera was still tethered to their security system, and the only thing I could do was stand in one place with a big cheesy smile, holding Canon's newest model.
Oh god hnnnngh the best camera store in my city is a bathroom sized room in an old gallery with a bunch of dusty lens boxes and stuff, nothing cool on display like that
the novelty of specifying every little bit of the lens will wear off after three weeks of typing it, trust me :v:
That's why we have terms like "fast as fuck nifty fiddy"
i just call it a 50
the novelty of specifying every little bit of the lens will wear off after three weeks of typing it, trust me :v:
Exactly this. 18-55 kit is enough.
They had some pretty mad zoom lenses, but it took the guy 20 minutes to get the battery in (what with all the security systems and having to find a battery) and it was late so I didn't dare ask him to switch. About the lens, I was being quite specific because I don't know. It'll wear off like cueball said :p

I will definitely be playing around with that quite a bit. Anyone have any pointers for a beginner?
