I spent about an hour yesterday in my schools darkroom with about 300 glowsticks :)
Omg. That sounds so fun..
Just spontaneously bought a Canon EOS 650 on ebay for £8.
I also didn't mean to post it in this thread and why is this funny
Omg. That sounds so fun..
You can't imagine the hilarity!
I meant to post these yesterday, but I was in a rush and forgot until just recently.
I was out around Gothenburg yesterday and shot some photos.

Nothing really flashy, just getting to grips with the camera and all that malarky - more in this set: Film
..Do you guess if it's going to be exposed or not? Like, this has always bothered me. Is film different to digital in this respect?
well my camera has a built in exposure meter but it doesn't work, assuming the batteries for it are just flat then it will be fine when i get some more but other than that it's all guess work!
If the camera was made after the late sixties, it will probably have a (maybe working) light meter. That or get a separate, hand-held light meter.
However with film you can still capture a lot more information if you over/under expose than with a digital sensor. Depending on how much over or under exposed the photo was, and also depending on the film, if you scan it right you still get all the data and can make it look like it was almost fine.
[editline]21st July 2012[/editline]
In other words if you have to guess it it can still turn out fine
[editline]21st July 2012[/editline]
For example, disposable film cameras usually have a single pre-set shutter speed and aperture size, and you can still get usable photos in different lighting
It does have one but it's either broken or just flat batteries. How would i go about sorting it out, the roll that had the one shot i wanted that was underexposed has already been developed but i have the negatives

Love this one buddy

Not sure how I feel about the missed focus on the eyes. I like the jacket being sharp and the photo works like that, but I just have a subconscious need for the eyes to be in focus!
Either way, dat expression. And the hair fix with her fingers like that is coooool.
she applied her eyeliner unevenly
A little back story on that photo of my friend, Zoe. Zoe absolutely HATES her photo being taken, you can't even imagine the difficulty of getting a photo of her! We were sat in photography class, I was fiddling with my camera and she was sat doing some annotations on her coursework and with her head down I decided to focus on her but I couldn't seem to get a decent focus on her hair so I focused on her jacket. With the aperture being on f/5.6 I thought it would keep everything in focus but turns out it didn't! As for the pose, her fringe is at a length that when she looks down to write it flops onto her work so she holds it back with her non-writing hand, this is something she's always done and is a bit of a characteristic of her now and once I had everything ready to take the shot I said her name and in the moment she looked up I clicked the shutter. The moment she saw the camera she covered her face and looked down so the shot you see is literally the split second of her reaction time between her eyes looking down the lens and then hiding away and because of this I was so dubious of whether the shot would come out because of how fast she hid but it came out perfectly. Probably the luckiest candid shot I've ever taken.

use the sunny 16 rule to calculate exposure. if it is sunny outside, your aperture will be f16, and your shutter speed will mimic your film speed. so if you were using 200 film, it would be something like 1/250 and f16. then just calculate your exposure from there, like wanting wider aperture you would lower the shutter. so you end up with 1/1000 (typical top for film cameras of the 70's) f5.6.
or just use your g2 to get your exposure, and calculate your camera accordingly. mirrorless are good for lightmetering as you get a good idea of what it will look like without following the built in meter
cheers trog, i have been using my g2 for metering (just putting it on P and seeing what it says), but thanks for the extra info!!
My lens sucks, there is so much film grain.
I was able to take.. decent shots I suppose? I edited the fuck out of some of them.

oh god, I laughed way too hard at the post below
Yeah don't leave your camera in auto, cameras do some unusual things in auto. But you want to keep your f stop at about f8 maximum, and keep the ISO as low as possible. With using your lens on a wide focal length (18mm) f5.6 will have everything in focus and be sharp throughout the frame. General rule of thumb is ISO and aperture being constant, with shutter changing as it will have the least amount of affect on the final outcome. 1/60 and 1/500 will look the same on a static subject
Are these any good?
