generic test photos
what lens are you using?
it's a sigma uc zoom 70-210mm, has macro focus but it only goes to f4.0
on the raw it was crisp enough that you could see the veins on the leaf etc, this is at 210mm
Been browsing this thread every day. Good stuff guys. Really impressed with both the content and posts I've been seeing.
Looking forwards to being able to contribute a little more. 1 more week of work for me and then I'm back.
Also, might be having a shared exhibition in London in September. Don't know the details too much as of yet, but I'll keep you all posted :)

I see what your doing there with out of focus leaves, but I find it's just too distracting.

Add a dash of goats licking salt off the roadside.

And finish it off with a little bit of saucy golden eagle

What super lens did you use for those? I am gathering it has an L in it? :(
What super lens did you use for those? I am gathering it has an L in it? :(
You guessed correctly, it's a Canon 100-400mm F/4.6-5.6L IS USM; all shots maxed out at 400. The camera is fullframe though, so I have to get real close, and that's the trick.
I want that lens.....I would have to save for AGES to even get near one though.
Wish there would be some revolutionary technique that brought lens prices down like 90% :P

Good pictures only come from L lenses
A few pictures from the first batch I've edited from Maine.

While it is certainly an interesting photo, I think that the flare and the leaves take away both space and focus from the subject. Brave models you have there though Bopie.
Well, I recently replaced my compact camera with an SLR (A Lumix Fz-48) and I went out today and took a few test pictures with it. Don't expect anything good, I'm pretty new to this whole thing and I would really appreciate some CC if you have time, this is something I'd quite like to get into.

First one is by far the best, simply because the others lack subjects.
First one is by far the best, simply because the others lack subjects.
What do you mean by subject? I would have thought it meant the main aspect of the image?
I want that lens.....I would have to save for AGES to even get near one though.

That technique is called slow adapted prime lenses or tele converters. Having the focal length at all is better than not having it. Try a T mount mirror lens, they run cheap and have good reach. Not that sharp, but get you a feel for having reach.
What do you mean by subject? I would have thought it meant the main aspect of the image?
Kind of. A subject is a single (Or multiple) part(s) of an image constructed in a way that immediately grab the viewers attention. Everything else is either a nice background, or lead the eyes into the subject.
Photographs 2 & 3 don't have a headline subject. Image 2 is just some flowers that blend into the background. Nothing says 'look at me!' it all looks the same across the image. You can alter this by changing the angle, lighting or using a lens that will completely blur out anything except what you're trying to photograph (e.g, using your maximum aperture)
Image 3 is underexposed. I have to look really hard to tell which flower you're trying to focus attention on since they're too dark. Either increasing ISO, slower shutter speed or increasing aperture (Or a mix of all three)
The last image is nicely bright and in focus, but the subject (the dinosaur thing) isn't very interesting.

Part of the problem I suppose is that there aren't many interesting things at the spot I went, it's primarily a golf course with a park which is kinda bland. I do know of a more interesting place which I might visit later on, and I'll definitely take into account what you have been saying, so thank you very much for that, I really appreciate it.
One last thing, I've lurked here a while and I notice people talking about editing the photo or post processing it, is this just altering the colours to make the subject more aesthetically pleasing? And what do people tend to use, is it a specific program or just any photoshop-esque program?
I made this off my friend.
