That reasoning tells you that the image has documentary merits, not emotional or artistic. I don't like the black letterbox format, I'd rather just crop those black lines away, but also the image tells me not a thousand words, but little more then location. Location is all they need for movies, though. But a photograph must capture more; the essence of the mood and ambience that comes with the location. A good photograph you can not only see but feel, hear, smell and touch. That comes with extreme light, motive and composition.

The black lines add nothing and are pointless. Sometimes a small frame can add something by trapping the eyes, most of the time not. Those lines do nothing.
That reasoning told me nothing like that at all. I agree with what you said, except I believe that photography is broader that just an emotional or artistic medium. Isn't photography EXACTLY very much suitable also for documentation, information and story-telling?
Now I wasn't asking about the photo in general, as I was simply trying it off on a random photo taken out of a car window. Being a huge film fan this format is simply pleasing to my eye, and wouldn't you agree that aesthetics are pretty essential for photography?

Yes, but then you go into very different genres. Journalistic photography. That is not my expertise. I worked for one of Norways biggest papers as a journalist and photographer for about a year, and I quit simply because I didn't like it. What I do, and like to do, is try to photograph expression.

Fair enough. Aesthetics are the most important feature of a photograph, obviously, but I don't think it adds anything personally. (Key word right there) - I think it confuses the eye and does little more.
What are you guys' thoughts on this format?

Not IMG-tagged because huge
Anamorphic is fine I just don't see a need for the black bars personally.
I just think that the diversity in the genres of photographs in this forum is sort of limitied to nature, medium shot portraits and architecture. Which is a pity, since photography can be so much more. I'm no contributor to anything else, but I just think that the debate might spark some inspiration or motivation.

im sorry are you fucking kidding me?
are you saying the entire cinematography department in a film is just there for objective storytelling?
im sorry are you fucking kidding me?

Not once did I say that. I said his picture is documentary-style, and for film that's sufficient. Of course if you want to go the step above "sufficient" you get artistic.
well when you said
Location is all they need for movies, though.
it came across that way, especially since documentary-style wasn't mentioned until your post
Simple miscommunication: I wasn't clear enough and you misinterpreted. It's all cool.
Took a couple shots today:

So black bars on a photo is a genre?
The branch seems distracting.

I don't really like the first one; the expression, and I'm not feeling the lighting either.
The second one has an interesting idea, but the execution is not great. It's difficult for me to look because it just doesn't flow well, especially because of the leaves that are ranging in focus to out of focus. I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to look at, you know?
The third one is an improvement from the others and there's not a lot to criticize. It's a decent photo and I like the tones, but nothing extraordinary.
I'm being fairly critical; they're decent photos though.
Thanks for the input - I'm fairly new to photography but still going strong and trying to learn as I do. I'm going to a birthday party tomorrow, so I'll try and put the CC to use and come back with some nice pictures
The lighting was kind to me this morning, yielding literally the best portraits I've ever taken, even if that's not saying all too much. I don't have anything to work with the RAW files yet, so I just had fun experimenting with the JPEGs in the mean time. Feel free to critique, but I'm planning to redo everything once I can get Lightroom again so don't worry too much.

I thought the same thing, but he's talking about the photo inside of his black bars.
I picked up this beast at work today. Had to get a shot of it the moment I got home.
I think I've overdone the colours on it, but I'm pretty happy with the composition. What are your opinions? Is this one of those shots that's been done to death?

I wish I hadn't had it on f/4 for this, but it was a quick and dirty shot off a chairlift and I only had one hand so all things considered.

They seem very flat in a way that doesn't fit, especially the whites in the top photo.
Try fucking with curves or levels in photoshop (ctrl m or l).
Im not by any means a photographer, although I'd like to be, I took this photo of my girlfriend and our rabbit, thought it was quite decent...

Spruced it up for you a bit. It's a good photo, but un-edited black and whites usually look really bland.
