processed my first RAW files! i just installed cs6 today, i like it so far. but overall i do like the sharpening and highlight recovery (jesus the a77 records so much detail in those "blown" highlights), but color editing i far prefer doing with my jpeg files still. [QUOTE=cmrna;37696814]Any criticisms on the batch I just posted?[/QUOTE] They're nice, I like them. Maybe they're not super interesting, but they're easy on the eyes; in focus, properly lit and all. What's really important is that you're proud of them. You have reason to be, as there's technically nothing really wrong with them. My only real criticism, however, would be that you should take more pictures! Explore the scenery, be adventurous and take some shots of your friends climbing trees or something. Being one with nature. Put us in YOUR shoes at that moment. You've got the shooting technique down, now get funky with some composition. Makes you even more proud of the final product. Keep shooting dude. hey guys i have some questions can someone please explain to me what the hell defines contrasting colors in a photo i'm taking a photography class and this week i'm supposed to take three contrasting pictures and three monochrome pictures i'm having a hard time figuring out which ones I took qualify as contrasting. i'm guessing in theory EVERY picture is one or the other, but I'm not entirely sure if that's true and I don't know exactly if he wants perfectly contrasting (blue yellow, green magenta, cyan red or whatever) or if just about anything suffices i can post the ones I took if you want, critical comments are always nice anyway also i'm not good so they'll probably be bad

okay so for example [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/bFJKA.jpg[/img_thumb] this works as contrasting because the green is yellow-y and contrasts with the ocean and [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/WB3Ae.jpg[/img_thumb] is more monochrome-y because it's vaguely similar colors, right? the seagull probably shouldn't be dead center but whatever

Anyways, what was the light like in the second one? It's really soft and flattering, for rocks that is. Also yesterday I saw my camera bag under my bed and remembered that I'm a photo major lmao wat do.

[editline]18th September 2012[/editline] [QUOTE=Zinayzen;37708826]okay so for example [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/bFJKA.jpg[/img_thumb] this works as contrasting because the green is yellow-y and contrasts with the ocean and [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/WB3Ae.jpg[/img_thumb] is more monochrome-y because it's vaguely similar colors, right? the seagull probably shouldn't be dead center but whatever[/QUOTE] while the second image is "monochrom-y", it's not monochrome. Monochrome literally means only one colour
i see someone on reddit told me (rather rudely) that i'm doing it wrong and just taking a fuckload of pictures and trying to categorize them later and instead i should be going out to take pictures with the mindset of knowing what i need and only taking those instead of trying to categorize them later is that true or not it sounds true to me pictures are hard
why do you need to categorize photos? just take them?
[QUOTE=Zinayzen;37709713]i see someone on reddit told me (rather rudely) that i'm doing it wrong and just taking a fuckload of pictures and trying to categorize them later and instead i should be going out to take pictures with the mindset of knowing what i need and only taking those instead of trying to categorize them later is that true or not it sounds true to me pictures are hard[/QUOTE] to be honest fuck them. Photography is whatever you make of it, to me it's not "candid" but I don't like having to put my sole intent into pre-planning my shots and focusing on those shots alone. Go out and live your life, the photos will come naturally, go out with the intent of taking very specific photos and I find it's easy to get stuck in a rut and forget to actually take photos because you're too caught up getting the "Right one" if that makes sense that being said it's still a good idea to pre-plan your shots, but I just feel if you're going out with the focus on getting THAT shot, not only will you find it more difficult to get that shot, but you also limit yourself because your mind is focused entirely on that shot itself it's just an ironic work flow for me, others might disagree
Going out with a mindset of what you want to take and then only taking photographs that fit the criteria is a great way to lose a lot of fantastic photographs, I wouldn't bother, it's fine to go out with an idea of what you want, then enjoy taking your pictures and trying to get the shot you want, but concentrating on one idea just doesn't seem productive.
Went out around town on the weekend and got a few shots from all over. I've been playing around in lightroom, getting used to it and trying out some colour combos and just seeing what works, so don't be afraid to tell me if I've destroyed the colours in the following shots. So i feel as if this is deserving of being in the creative photography thread, as it is a hell of a lot of content. I'm not one to show a lot of work at once but I'm here to ask for all of your opinions. I've just finished organising the 'united states' section of my portfolio, and i was wondering if you guys could take a look through it, maybe tell me if you feel some shots should be taken out and how the layout fits for your computer. It's a very different shooting style to what i usually post, so don't shit yourself with surprise [URL="http://cargocollective.com/marleyhutchinson/united-states"]http://cargocollective.com/marleyhutchinson/united-states[/URL] Thanks in advance.
I want to say I'm not a big fan of the method of viewing the images (having the slide the bar to see them) but it works pretty well.
I like the format, but scrolling through them is definitely more difficult in that orientation.

I disagree that those are Jake Stangel-y, but yeah very good stuff nonetheless, just not that particular style. Jake uses heavy but bright, contrasting tones and harsh flat light. Jake's stuff doesn't have shallowDOF-dreaminess like Marley's, either.
