That's because whisky is meant for sitting in an armchair in a highland pub surrounded by banter and old tales. Jack Daniels is for putting in your eyeball after snorting a line of coke whilst being blown by an attractive lady. There's a time and a place for both, and they're both fucking great.
I can't say I'm the biggest fan of JD, it's great for it's price. When I feel high-end I go black label, which is far best one for cocktails imo.
love each of these, very appealing to look at in each their own way. very nice.
The first Rhino pic looks a bit washed out.
The first Rhino pic looks a bit washed out.
eh, that's minor. the whole picture itself is set up nicely, imo. i'm not too focused on the details.
Conclusion: You can't preach freedom of art and creativeness in amateur pictures and dissmiss paid work as somehow less creative. If anything it is more creative because additionaly to the picture itself it creates a monetary value and a story of what it is done, paid and used for. And that is a quality of a picture that an amateur picture that is just posted online can't even have.
I swear you talk out your ass sometimes. You CAN dismiss paid work as less creative if its LESS CREATIVE. Most of the time it is because companies fit a quota and don't have a lot of time for the work to be in, so theres less time and room to be creative. Just because a photo has monetary value somewhere along the line that doesn't give it any more artistic merit as a photo, and just because a photo hasn't been paid for doesn't mean theres a level of artistic level it can't achieve, because this fiscal artistic merit doesn't fucking exist. ~shut the fuck up stop causing drama~
I can't help but get the impression that most folk are just a little bit fucking butthurt because this guy makes a living from photography. All I'm gonna say is, he's a hell of a lot more fucking talented than most "professional" photographers. I don't like ALL his shots, but I don't like ALL of anybody else's either. If my job was to take photos, fucking right I'd be posting them in here. Also, any time anybody has a question he is usually happy to answer. I think people need to lay off a little, I really don't see the big deal. This isn't the first time this has happened either. The guy is just posting photos. They're all of a pretty high standard. He's happy to share his techniques. What's the beef? He might brag a little, but at the end of the day we all like to show off those shots we're really proud of.
I'm just disagreeing to the first part of your post, I agree with a lot of your post but honestly man, it was constructive criticism, I don't see why I should get called out for making a post that's "bullshit" for giving criticism, I did address the fact that some of the work was professional and I didn't discourage it, I just gave my opinion (that it seemed extremely straight forward from a content point of view) but that they were well executed in terms of composition and all that I don't see how that's bullshit, all i'm saying is they weren't the greatest selection of shots to dump for the purpose of defending whatever it was he was defending, it's too early in the morning for me to get into a huge debate about it though so i'll try to refrain but, also defending my honor here a little. If we're getting to a point where we're just gonna say "some of his work is pro so we shouldn't crit it because that's just how other people want it" then well, you might as well not judge anyones work because that's how THEY wanted it to look seriously, criticism is not the same as laying into, though I feel I might have come off as that a bit [editline]6th October 2012[/editline]
Inzalonus, sorry if this sounds harsh, but you are talking absolute bullshit. You cannot cater to ALL tastes, your photographic palette may be BLAND in comparison to someone else.
specifically referring to this, you've pretty much just completely gone against the point of criticism here, I know that it's professional work and I did address that, I just didn't like the way he responded, which, tbh was quite childish actually, because it pretty much came off as "I'll show you creative! Look at how creative I am!!" which is why /b/rother said he was full of himself I never said the shots were bad, I just said bland, and, while I agree that you can't cater too all tastes isn't it kind of the point of criticism to help people TO cater to tastes? i mean what the fuck man

Just got done shooting my first ever roll of film. Is it just me, or are these pretty grainy for iso 200? Also, it seems like I have a light leak. How would I go about fixing it? I never want to do paid photo work because most everything involves going against how I like to take photos and just doing what other people want So that's why I am getting a psychology degree. And then I do free portrait stuff, because there's less expectations.

Seriously though my last shoot was so bad I was tempted to give them money.
i wanted to do senior portraits for free this year. however, i believe the local professional-photographers may put out a hit on me for taking their business, and doing it for free. not sure if it's a good idea or not.

Wish I would have shot with a little wider DOF so he was in focus more, but it pulls more attention to the ticket. The second one, Im not too fond of the shadows, but its REALLY dark in there, and its the best I could do without a diffuser.

It was closer to a compliment than an attack. Yeah I might have reacted a little strongly to Brian's defensive response, but somehow if I prefer a certain style of (his own) work over another, I'm this jealous fool? Oh and just for the record, I never said paid work was less creative. In fact, nearly all of the stuff I look up to is 'paid work'. Jake Stangel, Emiliano Granado, Thomas Prior, Tim Barber, etc.
The fact of the matter is that Brian has taken this shit before, and I'm not seeing a lot of valid criticism coming from here. I honestly love seeing his work, it's a BIG departure from everything else in this thread, and still very unique in its own respects. That said, no one really even said anything for anyone to have to justify anything. Roll_Program's post was a bit harsh, but again, it's not even valid. It just bothers me when you guys hate on his shit without proper justification, you're just going to push him to stop posting here altogether. He doesn't need to post here at all, he get's paid, for god's sake.
Well, the ones I mentioned are the ones that stand out for me personally. I'd just like to say sorry for earlier outbusrts, it's been a bit of a stressful time for me and having to get up 3 hours earlier than usual for work pissed me off a bit, hence the last rantpost

Because then every photo just vanishes in a white noise of of "ah that's lovey, oh that's nice, I like this one for the colours" where there is absolutely no point where one could start thinking about why one photo is bad and the other is good. Surely these kinds of arguments are for GD or facebook or something.
Why? It's more interesting and more challenging to my ways of thinking than endless rows of "ah, that's nice". We finally DISCUSS.
Everyone saying "oh what a nice photo! well done!" is for Facebook but let's not go the other way too much, guys.
Yeah, as an outsider to this argument I'm going to say it's a little discouraging to post photos in the midst of a heated argument, regardless of who is arguing with who. There's a different between constructive criticism and trying to rip eachothers throats out, and while I can't really say where the argument falls on that spectrum it's certainly the best climate for others to post their work.
sometimes I feel like we're not even arguing about the point we're arguing about, we're just using the argument as an excuse to lash into eachother
This was one of the few places that was devoid of such things. The problem is, no one knows how to communicate on this site. We can't have any sort of discussion without it being heated.
1.Who are you to question validity 2. In reply to FlippR; ISO 200 film generally isn't that grainy, but it might be more so if you use a cheap film.
I feel this post to be very irrelevant to what I was saying, and if you were even in favor of allowing the subject to die in the first place, why would you start out with a childish argument? Kind of counter-intuitive, wouldn't you say? I'm not sure if you were trying to be personal in your first point, but it was pretty obvious that none of the jabs against Brian were the least bit constructive, except bopie's. I never said that we should be grateful that he posts, I come to this thread to appreciate others work, and criticize what I feel could be better. If Brian didn't post here, that would be one less interesting photographer whose work I wouldn't be able to appreciate.
Why? It's more interesting and more challenging to my ways of thinking than endless rows of "ah, that's nice". We finally DISCUSS.
people have been giving constructive criticism throughout the whole thread. that's good discussion for a thread like this. not "my idea of creativity is superior to yours"
