I like it too. Upon first glance I thought it was that textured glass from an older car headlight with a slight reflection on it.

Wow, superb. Straight up looks like a page of concept art that someone would have drawn and painted super realistically. Concept art because it's typically straight from the mind done in a way that seems perfect to its creator. You have some very serious portraiture talent!

Pretty cool. It would be very interesting to see these done with subjects mixed that had an obvious emotional relationship, for instance a gruffy sailor combined with this lighthouse pic. I love how his hair is the same texture as the ocean waves. Actually the more I look at this the more it interests me. Was this a double exposure in film or merged together with Photoshop?

The best HDR's are the ones that you CAN'T tell are HDR.
The picture looks underexposed and overexposed in places that shouldn't be. It looks very FAKE in that way, the point of decent HDR is to overcome problems of single shots, so you should of aimed to get rid of the exposure qualms.

I've definitely been missing out not using any sort of photo editing software. I wish there was more than just nature and brick buildings around my campus, I'd really like to get more interesting shots.

Drive/walk somewhere else. Photographing a campus you see every day can be very uninspiring. Shake things up.

Love the mood and colour palette, but I feel the subject could have more definition. Placement in the frame is ok, just maybe if you had pivoted around to your left and placed the subject with the bright grass and blown out sky in the background I could give great definition through a solid silhouette. A good rule of thumb I use (read it in some old famous photographer's advice article) is that if you can squint/blur your vision and still make out the subject easily then it is well defined and gives the photo a bit more initial impact.

star points == number of aperture blades. (the smaller your aperture the more dramatic the effect becomes).
