Pick, is your stuff candid or do you ask them to pose? or is it a mix?
Also edited the distracting log out of the left hand corner. re-uploading like crazy to flickr lately.

Nine times out of ten it's candid. They're usually just snaps in the middle of a conversation.
I've never done an arranged photo shoot.
Usually the only posed shots I'll take is a self portrait or a group shot.

Thats cool, you must be quick on the old focus ring then.
I guess so; but not as good as I'd like to be.
For every good shot, there's likely to be a second where the focus is off.
When shooting film I'll often expose 2 frames to be sure I've got it.
Some more of the gig I shot the other night.
Tried a fake film style of processing, what do you guys think?

There's some insane noise on the full size versions, had to shoot at 1600iso on my 1000D
Focus is spot on. Don't worry about the noise; it's not noticeable at this size and certainly doesn't detract from the images. Editing is pretty sweet too and the low-key works great.
The only thing I can pick you up on is the framing. I know it can be tricky sometimes with a tight lens in those sorts of indoor situations. If you're shooting from eye level, often the subjects in the fore-frame can block out those behind. You could possibly help this by using a different angle.
Crouch on the floor or pull up a chair.
Move that red bull can off of the table temporarily etc.
Just little things like that add up - and you can hedge your bets on a digital by trying various different things and seeing what works - especially with animate subjects such as musicians.
Good work though. Keep it up.

Which is better?
Nevermind I deleted the photo since I replaced it. Anyways is the PP too overdone? I didn't like the walls in the background on my first edit.

Ramped my ISO as high as I could, don't know what it actually was, you should be able to view my EXIF info, get the photo up on Flickr, click actions, view EXIF info. That will tell you everything about the photograph. :)

Also, close up filter.
Dvorak231 - they are the best gig photos I have seen in these photography threads. I really like those!

Wow thanks for all the comments and artistic ratings guys, I honestly didn't think I'd get any.
Yeah, the stage was absolutely tiny, so trying to frame the shots was a real pain. I tried a few from lower angles or from to the side of the stage but I didn't really like the composition.
Tried to content aware the can, probably the only time it's given a perfect result without tweaking haha

Maybe it's just me but I kinda prefer it with the can in, hmm
@dvorak that second shot is soo great. I love the composition and the great balance between black, greys and whites. It's a great job the digital -> film post processing, looks genuine to me! You definitely deserve those artistic ratings.
I prefer more without the can, feels less distracting to me and lets us focus more on the guitarist imo.
Some more pictures from public events, this time the Twilight Parade in Sydney.

I love this one. The photo displays such a wide range of character. His skin looks so smooth and soft, his expression shows the emotion he's putting into his music, and the drummer in the back caught mid-action is great. Wonderful shot!

I feel like this photo would have a stronger composition without the light painting. I can see how maybe you were trying to create a contrast with the hard architectural lines but I don't feel like light painting really did it.
I do really like the point of view you chose however. The multicolored panels really stand out, providing a good variety from the perfectly aligned white/gray panels above.

The room was 100% black, I was using the LED's on the back of my phone to light up the room, the white streak is my phone screen.
without the "light painting" it would have looked something like this

Ah, I see. Even so, it feels like a distraction of the composition to me. I would have liked to see the same photo but with you blocking the phone light from directly hitting the lens.

I love the look of that room. Really 70's -ish.
You should bring something else to illuminate the room though.
The glowing light is perfect, it needn't be changed. Any other light would ruin it's 'shape'.
It's been my wallpaper since it was uploaded.
i need to use my film camera a little, haven't used it at all since I've got my 5D
