Your shutter speed should be as high as possible whilst still shooting at iso 100 and whatever aperture. You shouldn't have to worry about it, and f/8 at 18 mm vs 250mm (for me) would be exactly the same amount of light, so the same shutter speed.

I love all of these photos in this set; I was curious about the title of this one. I noticed you named it Basilisk Monument. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but I know the proper term for a monument like that is an Obelisk. Sorry if I sound like a know-it-all :v: Just felt like getting more insight on this photograph.

This may sound kind of amateurish, but I'm sort of confused by what you mean by "f/8 at 18 mm vs 250mm (for me) would be exactly the same amount of light, so the same shutter speed."
I understand that at f8 it will let in the same amount of light at all focal lengths, but doesn't the shutter speed also change based on what the meter picks up on frame? For example, if I have landscape scene on a bright sunny day, I'm standing in an open field taking one photo of a treeline and the sky at 50mm; then I take another directly in the center of a group of dense trees with no sky in frame. Wouldn't that cause the shutter speed to change because there isn't as much light coming into the frame? (I'm in Aperture Mode at f8) OR am I just wrong? I would test this right now but it's late at night.
Also, why not shoot at f8 for nearly all situations with a distinct subject if it provides the sharpest results? Now with a landscape shot it would make sense to shoot at a higher aperture to get a crisper focus on the entire scene, correct? One last thing, what is the ideal aperture for landscape shots?
ideal aperture for landscapes depends on the lens. typically you want between 5.6-11, as any lower will cause out of focus corners and any higher will cause diffraction (not as sharp because of the hole being too small). and usually when you are using a wide angle the scene will be entirely in focus anyways, so past f11 should not be used unless it's the sweet spot of your lens (certain wide angle zooms are around 11-16) or if you are using film and can't get a decent enough shutter.
but for most lenses 5.6 and 8 will do, there should not be a significant difference between the two unless pixel peeping to notice a difference. corners will be sharper at 8 though, which is about the only thing to keep in mind.
I'm curious, does anyone else here use distortion correction software? I use Lightroom and batch process all my raws with distortion correction (and it automatically detects what lens I used for what photo, and corrects for that lens instead of globally applying the same settings to all photos.) I find it makes quite a big difference when you compare the two photos afterwards.
messing around with lightroom and curves in photoshop

a lot of cameras have in camera software to correct for lens defects (i know it's a m4/3rds standard, and the nex 5n has software as well, nikons use correction on crhomatic abberation). i personally don't because i use old lenses that don't have software support, but it is a common practice to correct for distortion in software. it's not like the lens designers wanted there to be distortion in the first place, so no harm done.
I don't use distortion correct, feel too unnatural. ~elitism~

that's true, but distortion correction can look quite nice in some cases. Guess it just depends what you're going for
You mention color, and I'm colorblind as well as possibly just oblivious, what's unusual about the sky?
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this one. The sky is made up of deep pinks and violets, as opposed to the usual dusk colours of orange/red. To what severity are you colourblind?
that's true, but distortion correction can look quite nice in some cases. Guess it just depends what you're going for
oh i was definitely supporting distortion correction. i think it's best used to correct for warping of the plane (like things bulging in or out), but vignette correction and abberation correction are real nifty.
personally i don't use it though, photoshop doesn't have lens profiles for what i use, and i'm fine with that.
the biggest difference will be when you are looking at them side by side, otherwise differences will not be hugely noticeable.
the biggest difference will be when you are looking at them side by side, otherwise differences will not be hugely noticeable.
I think it really just depends on the subject and the focal length. If I'm shooting architecture with lots of straight lines at a short focal length like 18mm on my kit lens then distortion correction can make a very big, and in my opinion, important difference.
yeah i'll agree with you there, but most people don't shoot architecture on kit zooms from a straight on angle

Yeah, when I was uploading these shots it was like 1AM, and I had been out taking photos for 6 hours and everything was just kind of upside down. When I had uploaded these I just went to bed and died, so basically when I was naming them I had no idea about anything. :v:

I don't have the big camera lamps that real photographers do, since I'm just starting out and am taking this as a school course.
Any help? Pleeeease?
the second one would probably have been photoshopped;
taken photo in a light box or something, then removed the white background in photoshop, replaced it with that...
third one could be straight from inside a lightbox, or a CG render (i'm not sure, but there's a real lack of reflection in it, even of a camera or something, and the liquid just looks kinda un-natural to an extent)

I'm pretty sure you can get the effect with a few strobes with softboxes and intense post processing, which is what I presume they did.
