yeah, that's not to say that if you use auto settings there's anything wrong with that though, but I just don't feel like i'm taking full advantage of the fact that it is an SLR by doing so personally. That being said, you can use auto to get a good exposure setting then switch it to manual if you want to save time tryna find the right exposure settings, but I only ever spend about 10 seconds or so max with that anyway in the end, a picture is a picture, as a photographer your best ability is taking advantage of what you have available
Yeah I agree with the aperture ring thing, back in my photography class we used the teachers' cameras and they all had full-metal lenses with aperture rings on them. It just feels better to use that. Thanks for the info, guys!
While full auto mode is awful, Av or Tv can prove useful if you're not ready for a shot that presents itself before you and is going to be gone in seconds. Manual is always recommended but may not always serve your purposes best for things like non-staged portraiture with changing light conditions. More large format arca-swiss work: Notice how everything is in focus. The plane of principle focus was tilted to align with the plane of the table. I love view cameras. Developing huge negatives is awesome.
Manual exposure, manual focus. You will learn much more going all manual. I have never touched auto settings since I got my first DSLR, I got into SLR/DSLR cameras mainly because I wanted to be able to control everything. If you stick with it you'll have no problems.
i shoot in aperture priority all the time to be honest, shooting in manual all the time for the sake of shooting in manual is kind of tedious, the only camera i actually like doing it on is the om-1, because the shutter speed ring is around the lens mount and you can feel with your hand if it's at a hand-holdable setting or not without taking the camera away from your eye. aperture priority is good because more often than not, you're gonna be more concerned with controlling the depth of field rather than the shutter speed, and it means you can take a photo fast. plus, it takes no effort to get used to using a manual lens on a DSLR [editline]11th April 2012[/editline]
I just imagined he was sitting down pretending to be an airplane :V
to me it looks like he's going "it's okay grass, chill out, everything will be fine"

Adjusting for my aperture is simple enough, if I lower it (as in from 5 to 3.5 as an example) i just scroll up my shutter speed and on-screen light meter gives the info I need [editline]12th April 2012[/editline] also hazey let us know when you get them photos developped [editline]12th April 2012[/editline] oh shit blaze's avatar changed I think we pissed him off

Perhaps it has to do with having dedicated buttons for everything and two dials (one for the shutter and one for the aperture) which makes it much quicker for me to change stuff. The only thing I'd put on auto is the focus if I have to get some fast action (but I don't do that kinda stuff often if at all) or if I'm using a newer lens with a focus ring that's not really good/smooth. One thing I like about shooting always in manual is that if I move from my main DSLR to any camera that's fully manual I'm already used to changing everything. I also find exposure guessing much easier because of all the times I have set the camera I can remember the settings easier for each situation. (like writing vs just reading for studying and remembering stuff) As Inzalonus though there's nothing wrong with auto modes, I just prefer it this way.
oh shit blaze's avatar changed I think we pissed him off
I think it's been like that for a while now. :v:
I only shoot in full manual if the situation needs it (aka the pictures don't come out right), otherwise I use aperture priority and try to get a pretty wide open aperture. Here's a random shot I took of my dad when he was fiddling with his computer: Connecting by DominikRungelrath, on Flickr

Wow it's been a while.. Went exploring for a change, tried the Cliche misty water effect. Now I don't need to go to the shoot anymore but instead can sit on my roof and take photos from there"
Oh, the Sigma 600MM bazooka lens?
