Is how you define winning at life you are already losing. Happiness doesn't come from those things, they are simply a means to be happy.
Only if your career requires it or you truly seek the knowledge is this applicable to winning at life.
Sex is often simply a means to get affection from someone. You don't seek the sex, you seek the love and intimacy that comes from it. If you simply want the physical pleasure wacking it is virtually the same without any of the hassle.
If you get everything you ever wanted you have a sad life. Life is about challenge and denial. What is so special about getting something if you know you can get it? Without the possibility of failure there is no challenge and without challenge there is no reward.
Cash is useless, it is something to pay for food and enrich your life. It makes the intangible things you have(love, confidence, and happiness) a little bit better.
You're taking those steps too literally, they're just basic goals but you can replace them with whatever you want from life.

I use to be one of those guys who wouldn't admit openly admit to watching anime or other things that might not be "cool" until I realized that I don't really care if someone thinks I'm not cool. After that I started enjoying myself a lot more.
This thread's advice will only allow the path to sucess to continue being dominated by social skills, which it shouldn't (I remember reasing that 80% of my country's people had their first jobs thanks to their social networks helping them).
I'm just happy the career I'm interested in gives about 3 or 4 shits over whether I'm a basement dweller or a pro bro.
This is disheartening. He's just trying to offer his two cents at being successful and people dump all over him. You don't have to agree with him but you don't have to treat him like he's a fool.
You're just butt-hurt because everyone ripped you to shreds in your "My personal two cents on how to be a happier person." thread.

What career are you interested because I can nearly guarantee that it is dominated by social skills too. I can't think of a career path that isn't.

I was thinking of something in Physics, and judging by how geniuses usually have conditions that aren't that well socially acclaimed, like autism and dyslexia (Newton, Tesla and Einstein pop to mind, Tesla had shit-tons of uncommon phobias), most employers would be more prone to overlooking it.
That and the fact that people who are interested in science tend to be more permissive socially.
By the way, if it helps narrowing stuff down, I'm interested in Theoretical Physics, but I guess I'm as likely to end up solving equation in a Mac Donalds booth anyway, heh.
Trololo!

Not really. Einstein, Newton, and friends were incredibly talented, like talented beyond belief. Unless you are a physics genius you will probably need tons of social skills and connections, especially early in your career when you are a fresh face.
Plus scientists have to make presentations all the time, to both colleagues and the people who pay your bills, and presentations take a great amount of social aptitude.

They aren't steps, that is how you defined for everyone what is winning at life. In reality winning in life is simply living happily and comfortably. You can fulfill yourself in other ways than those you said and infact it would be better to do so since relying on material goods for happiness is shallow in itself.

We all have enough flaws as it is without trying to create them.
Still, employers will be more uninterested in social skills (note that I said 4 shits instead of 2 (insert :V smiley that I don't know how to input in my post here) , and besides, from experience, most people who like science aren't really that focused on socialization. I'm also taking a bit of data from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, NT's are usually the scientists and they are very driven inwards.
The test is a bit wonky, truthfully, but the categorizing theory behind it is good.
Employers can't be too socially driven or they'll find themselves under-staffed.
You make a point with presentations, though. Honestly, I find that you need less charisma in presentations than you need in conversations, since you can plan ahead, and not rely as much on charisma-driven instinct.

That is true and the field of science in general is a bit different as far as social skills goes. However, you will still be working with partners and it is important that you are able to socialize efficiently with them. By socialize I don't mean you act like life of the party, but you are able to communicate well, and being a fun enough guy that people enjoy working with you.

What about when people ask questions on your presentation? You need a bit of charismatic instinct in order to articulate your answer in a pleasing manner. No one has confidence in someone who is stuttering and stumbling over their words when you ask them to elaborate on their plan.

True, but you only really need average social skills, so that people don't actually dislike you to the point where the efficiency of their work dips. You still get positive points for having above-average social skills, but I don't think it counts nearly as much as it does on other careers since you'll be spending most of your time crunching numbers solo and stuff.

Good point, I guess it's still possible to prepare answers for possible questions but that isn't a very good solution.
Also, I'm pretty sure only the big dogs do presentations like heads of departments and paper publishers.
While it does mean that it takes charisma to excel, you can still be a regular scientist with average social skills. I would guess it's the promotions that would be more interested in the like.
lol.

agree
best way to "win" at life: be yourself and never stop doing what you do.
[editline]22nd January 2011[/editline]
unless you're the OP in which case get murdered
There more ways than your to win at life.
I didn't know the board game was real life :v:
How to win at life: enjoy yourself, be happy etc.
Plenty of people are happy without a phd or a shitload of money, as long as they have a roof over their heads.
And I see one of the things is "Get everything you ever wanted"
Seriously? Do you have any idea how impossible that is?

Gee that's ordinary WolvesSoulZ, you were rated dumb by someone who wins at life, may I prescribe a PHD? :jerkbag:
