True I suppose. Depends on your concept of purpose.
But on a biological basis almost anything you can do can be counted as a biological purpose. Just because we can breath doesn't mean it is our biological purpose to breath. Life in the end is an extremely advanced chemical reaction, there is no purpose to it, it just does what it does, it is no more our "purpose" to reproduce than it is for a star to cause a fusion reaction.
Biology doesn't impart purpose. You are biologically given incentive to reproduce as a consequence of evolution, but that's not the same as purpose.
Right.. but we are given our "purposes" or whatever by our biology, as in our huge amount of neuron cells and the whole complex brain that makes us talkative and more alive than any other animal. And then here we are talking about it, our biology at work? But anyway, you can definitely have a purpose or a meaning in your life. But one should probably manage his expectations because life can be very short.

Fuck it then
Life is what you make it.
Yeah I'd hate to meet a forceful nihilist, that is, one who attempted to push people's own beliefs or enjoyment of life down actively whilst saying 'it doesn't matter, everything is pointless anyway'. Myself, I am an existentialist.
You honestly have to be pretty dumb not to see the point of life is to pass on your seed. As humans we've essentially "outgrown" a lot of these instinctual tendencies but you can easily observe it in other animals.
this instinctual tendency to reproduce did not preclude doing so without the permission of the other party it seems you have conveniently forgotten that in your quick assumption that evolutionary reasons for actions have an objective merit

Its from the film Lewboski, its got a Nihilist gang in it.
Either way it doesn't belong in this thread.
Like my English teacher used to say, there are 2 options when it comes to existentialism: Ignorance or suicide. If you keep thinking about it, it gets more and more depressing. So it's best not to.
What a retarded thing to say, by a teacher especially. u either stay dumb or u kill urself lol
What a retarded thing to say, by a teacher especially. u either stay dumb or u kill urself lol
I'm sure it was a joke, but it references the far reaching implications of this philosophy when(if?) you realize nothing matters and you're going to die, it's understandable why introspection and meaning to life is depressing
OP do you believe in ethics or morality?
I believe nihilism has the right view, just the wrong attitude. I don't believe there is any real meaning to life, no real purpose, nothing that decides how you live. I however think that this means one thing and one thing only, that you are free to make your own purpose as to why you live.
I have no fucking idea what you just said because it seems to me like the kind of stuff you see scrawled on a wall in an alleyway in shit. Really. I mean, What process goes through your head to type that kind of stuff out?
I speak like if someone played a "Free Jazz" piece. If you don't get it, put the effort in.
when(if?) you realize nothing matters and you're going to die, it's understandable why introspection and meaning to life is depressing
I really can't be bothered to write out a speech about why nothingness is not a bad thing, Alan Watts explains it better than me anyway, people fear nothingness because of its stigma rather than what it is. [editline]8th November 2011[/editline] If you believe in theories like the big bang, everything you see around you today was created because of nothingness.
OP do you believe in ethics or morality?
The way he expresses himself is really hard-hearted and angry. I'm surprised if he's had love for anyone other than himself.
I don't think you can really be much of an existentialist unless you're a moral nihilist. Personally I'm both, but the existentialist element is merely the antithesis of nihilism. Despite reasoning that morality cannot proven through analysis - not even a little - I still have imagination and desires and thoughts, whatever their ontological status. Hence I'm essentially existentialist. I don't know if I'd take nihilism any further than moral nihilism though; I haven't battled with the ontological status of truth/an independently existing external world yet. I have quite a Humean approach to morality; I use his is-ought argument (you can't derive an ought statement from an is statement) all the time in discourse. The ontology of something really really really tiny is very different to nothingness.
OP do you believe in ethics or morality?
I have some degree of ethics and morality, yes, I would never hit a woman, a child, or a disabled person unless attacked with intent to hurt and/or kill. I retain most normal moral values but i cannot comprehend any morals about sexuality. [editline]8th November 2011[/editline]
I speak like if someone played a "Free Jazz" piece.
The way he expresses himself is really hard-hearted and angry. I'm surprised if he's had love for anyone other than himself.
"i disagree with OP therefore i'm going to make unsubstantiated ad hominems" This is not how you debate. [editline]8th November 2011[/editline] Take a look at where you are on this pyramid. Anyway,
I'm sure it was a joke, but it references the far reaching implications of this philosophy when(if?) you realize nothing matters and you're going to die, it's understandable why introspection and meaning to life is depressing
This is an oft-repeated lie. Realising that the Universe has no objective meaning or morality system does not mean that you can't form your own subjective moral viewpoints, which can certainly include things like altriusm. Not only that, subjective moral viewpoints do not have to be arbitrary.
"i disagree with OP therefore i'm going to make unsubstantiated ad hominems" This is not how you debate. Take a look at where you are on this pyramid.
Come on, only level 3. Anyway, I still see nothing to gain from this thread if it is about rejecting all speculations. There is use of making your own beliefs, but rejecting every other mindset is not going to help you build on your central belief system. Experimental grammar, so don't act confused.
Experimental grammar, so don't act confused.
I'm going to claw my own fucking eyes out. Really. You speak like someone off their head on all kinds of PCP, Cocaine, Heroin, Crack, while still coming off as someone who has no idea of the subject at hand. You denied a song was on The Wall album when it was THE FOCAL SONG OF THE ALBUM. You claim you use "Experimental grammar" when you really just shitpost and pass it off as "being unique". I'm so sick and tired of you shitting up the debate section with your nonsensical sentencing and grammar.
You denied a song was on The Wall album when it was THE FOCAL SONG OF THE ALBUM.
Dude, I just FORGOT one song was on an album (I mistook it for being on the Final Cut). How does that make me insane? I didn't really care much for The Wall as compared to Moon and Animals though.
I am saying you are horribly misinformed and you make no attempt to correct your errors. Even after three people said it was on The Wall you said it wasn't.
you make no attempt to correct your errors. Even after three people said it was on The Wall you said it wasn't.
It's a good thing nobody actually cared thereafter and the discussion went on. That song is barely 2 minutes anyway. Don't Leave Me Now is the most overlooked though, what did you think?
I have some degree of ethics and morality, yes, I would never hit a woman, a child, or a disabled person unless attacked with intent to hurt and/or kill.
