They killed our innocents in Pearl Harbor, we kill theirs.
9/11, we destroyed two countries for our two buildings.
Wow you're not smart
They killed soldiers not civilians
And if you think invading 2 countries for 9/11 is justified then you're a dumbass. The hijackers weren't even from said countries.
Wow, the only nuclear attack is in japan.

Almost noone in Pearl Harbor was a soldier, and we weren't even involved in the war at that point.

Almost EVERYONE in pearl harbor was a soldier. It was a navy port for christs sake.
Yeah, because the only people aboard the Battleship USS. Arizona were grandmas and people enjoying their leisurely stroll right?
In WWII every one killed civilians and more civilians were killed in other attacks than the nukes
In my opinion the most frightening nuclear weapon is the neutron bomb. Designed to kill all biological things and leave infrastructure intact. Instead of bottling the radiation up, it just releases all of it when it explodes.
Fun fact: more people died in the fire-bombing of Tokyo.
don't even get me started on the Dresden terorr bombings.
American generals sure were douchebags back then.

Isn't Germany one of the most Uranium rich nations?
Enriching uranium at that time was really slow progress with gaseous diffusion.
Btw I wouldn't be concerned if a terrorist group gets its hands on a huge piece of weapon grade plutonium. It's not that hard to get plutonium from a black market. The problem is making a powerful bomb. Plutonium requires a perfect inplosion to make the chain reaction, which reeally hard to make. You got to Terrorist groups just don't have the money and know-how to make it. It requires a rich country to do it. Or a country that's willing to let the people starve to focus the money research.

You don't realize though, if you have a nuclear weapon with a failed primary detonation, you get a dirty bomb, which can be much, much worse than a complete nuclear detonation.
Its sad to think of the people within the initial blast radius, who were vaporized in the blink of an eye.
And to those within range of the shockwave; the sudden blinding flash, followed by the blistering heat and radiation.
Bad way to go...
Best way to go besides while having sex.
No pain involved, no bodies to deal wtih and instantly cremated.
Incredebly humane.
More on Dr. Funk's point,
Another big factor in the decision to drop the bombs was soviet involvement. I forget the dates but the Soviets were going to join the war in the pacific about a week after the bombs were scheduled to drop. America had to end the war before that date because if they didn't then the Soviets would join and share in control of Japan afterwards. That meant that America would have a communist presence in the west, the Soviets would have gained a great amount of control in the pacific waters (the soviets were working on atomic weapons as well which could then be deployed from the pacific area),f tensions over the now divided Germany and the mounting distrust between capitalism and communism our feelings towards the Soviet Union and communism in general at the time we couldn't let that happen.
Yes, the soviets were allready in Manchuria.
If the US dind't drop the bomb, japan woudl'nt be nowhere close in their current development. It'd be the same shithole as the whole eastern europe is.
From a historical point of view, the US occupation of post-war Japan was one of the best things that could have happened for Japan. It was completely blood-less, the nation made huge advances in all areas, then the Americans left the Japanese as allies. One of the greatest occupations ever, it seems to me.
You don't realize though, if you have a nuclear weapon with a failed primary detonation, you get a dirty bomb, which can be much, much worse than a complete nuclear detonation.
Dirty bombs aren't actually that dangerous, and it's very unlikely to cause many deaths with it. Plutonium isn't really dangerous to humans as people think, and the detonation would be most likely very weak. Dirty bombs are mostly psychological weapons.

except, the US wasn't involved in the war and therefore Japan had no reason to attack
I think Nuclear weapons are ridiculously overpowered, keep them in safe just in case of an alien attack
I think Nuclear weapons are ridiculously overpowered, keep them in safe just in case of an alien attack
Trust me, if aliens attack, nuclear weapons against their weapons would be like sticks against guns.
The scale of the Tsar Bomba absolutely terrifies me.
Posting in epic shitstorm.
:munch:
If humanity was going to be wiped out by aliens I would want every single Nuke on the planet to be detonated so those alien pricks couldn't have Earth.

Well an inhabitable Earth anyways.
Op didn't mention anything about isotopes and the types of ionizing radiation involved in nuclear bombs.

Scorched earth, literally.
Although the tsar bomb was the most powerful single detonation ever, its effectiveness would be about the same as a few, say 4 much less powerful warheads. This is because the energy output has to be increased by a factor of 4 for every double in blast radius. Think of it as a car, 200 HP will get you to 150 mph yet having 400 will only get you to 200. The race to create the most powerful single bomb was just a massive dick waving contest.

This is about nuclear weapons not a thread about nuclear physics.
Asides that, is it true that the U.S. capability in launching retaliatory strikes (how many missiles that they can launch) still classified?
Dirty bombs aren't actually that dangerous, and it's very unlikely to cause many deaths with it. Plutonium isn't really dangerous to humans as people think, and the detonation would be most likely very weak. Dirty bombs are mostly psychological weapons.
Yeah, thousands of people getting severe radiation poisoning isn't that dangerous at all.
Highly related; Every nuclear explosion since 1945

I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. =)
I really like the Nuclear Science culture in some parts of the state//
Japan was fucking crazy in WWII. By the way they were acting, they'd rather let their entire nation die then lose to the Allies. Which is just fucked up beyond belief. Innocent people dying by the thousands is never good. But it might've saved two nations (The US and Japan locked in a struggle for god knows how many years).
Though I think nowadays nuclear bombs aren't as practical as they used to be. As in, there aren't that many ways to effectively deploy them. When someone launches an ICBM at someone else, the target doesn't just sit there going "O NO IT GUN HIT US", they will neutralize the threat before it gets anywhere near. So unless it turns into a "fuck the world" situation where hundreds of warheads are launched, nuclear weapons aren't as definite a threat as one would think. Unless I am misinformed.
I love the people who say we shouldn't have dropped the bombs on japan, or the people who say we should ban nuclear weapons. Did you know that if Japan didn't surrender after the first two, we planned to nuke the mainland 20 more times and stage a full on assault? Look it up. Back then we didn't know about radiation's effects, and our armies would've been walking right through it all. Not to mention the fact that the japanese were practically brainwashed to hate us, did you know in one village on Okinawa when we entered many villagers simply jumped off the cliffs at the sight of us? Because when they pulled out the Japanese told them that we would rape and kill every last one of them, that we were some form of barbarian horde and that suicide was better than us. If we had to invade Japan, there wouldn't have been any civilians. Every last man, woman, and child probably would have been attacking us with bricks and shanks and suicide bombing us. It was better to take two cities than to take an entire country of fanatics.
