I used to not have this habit, but I got it over time. Now I'm trying to lose it again. Thing is, I do it even when I'm typing and it feels natural.
One of my hypotheses is that I formed the habit because I used to sound monotone and serious all the time and it makes me sound less serious.

You too?!?! What country are you in?
The U.S.
Elaborating on my previous post, it's used because you are subconsciously aware that you are hesitant in continuing your sentence, so you use the idiosyncratic filler (like, urm, etc) to inform the listener that you are not finished speaking.
I do this but most of the time I either say "Eh" or "Ehm" or sometimes I kinda pause and swallow spit in my mouth, but I don't even produce that much saliva when I talk.. it's just a bad habbit/adopted stutter.

I've never heard of this before :tinfoil:

United states of America.
California.
Are you in my speech class?
You have a creative speech class? Pardon my ignorance but...what the hell?
Edit:

I didn't even know such a thing existed.
Because we'd all sound like Captain Kirk if we didn't.

People say "like" because they're too stupid to form a whole sentence without stopping for a second to think of something.
What, you JUST noticed this?
Sometimes I try to figure out a way to say the sentence without "like", and normally I can't do it.
No, it's in highschool too.

oh wow
It's called hedging. It's to lessen meaning and make you sound more agreeable. It's generally considered a sign of being a less powerful speaker, but it's very easy to fall into.
It's also effectively a non-verbal utterance... it just happens to also be a word. Just to give the speaker time to think and, like I say, lessen meaning.
Wise up, wierd avatar guy.

Why does this thread have a POLOTICS post icon?
I use the good old: "Uhhhhh."
Always do this. I don't care about it.
Always do this. I don't care about it.
Exactly. Same here. The OP must have a wild hair up his ass if it bothers him so much, that he has to make a thread for it.

It's a badger, DUR
It's not only in the English language that this shit is happening. Here in the Netherlands everyone constantly keeps saying "zeg maar" every other word, which almost literally translates back to "like".
It's fucking annoying, and it actually hasn't been around that long. Maybe a year now.
You would hate this guy then:

I, don't know, what, you're, talking about
I should replace 'like' with 'similar to' every time.
People say "like" because they're too stupid to form a whole sentence without stopping for a second to think of something.
Just like Obama is stupid for saying uhhh alot right?
It's just a habit.

Not a good speech habit.
I don't say 'like' or 'uh' whenever I talk. Sometimes if my brain farts I might just stop talking altogether until my brain catches up with my mouth.
Same happens here. The kids say "like ehhu"but in spanish. Can you imagine it?
