I found it more funny than disturbing because of how hard they're trying
This clearly works, provokes response yes?
There's something inside me that wants this game, but then the rest of me says "why would you even do that"
This will probably come across wrong and I know this post is insanely long...
...but this kind of stuff just goes to show why we need to push critical thinking in our consumption of media more. I don't mean this in the "this game is dumb and they are dumb" kind of way, but just how this kind of stuff really does a disservice to their message and just causes further alienation when I don't think truly think that's their intent.
So, breaking it down. There's two messages here:
1. Political Correctness is an alienating process and forces us to be more artificial.
2. Games are taking themselves too seriously and need to focus on being entertaining and satisfying to play.
Their response is to combine the two messages and the problem leads to muddied results. Games are too serious, but this game has no hint of straying from that (like say Postal 2 or Saints Row). It takes itself very seriously. From the narration to the very real and disturbing animations the civilians have when reacting to gunfire. So then it wants to talk about Political Correctness? Well, not really. The character is shooting people who seem pretty normal and not really super correct, there's no clear signs of the strain and the player character is already too far gone to really form even the vaguest sense of empathy with, so that point is kind of moot too.
There's just too many mixed messages, which is a shame because honestly it does look like these guys could do something good if they would just take a moment and try to focus on what they feel their main message should be. If it's about "PC gone mad", focus on making someone likable forced to extremes to be noticed, or truly studied the distant and mentally ill and examine how the world is perceived by them and not just some vague characterture that kind of looks and feels archaic. If it's about "game should be fun", just focus on the mechanics, avoid the loaded imagery of a crowd of people scrambling for an exit whilst being murdered in a hail of gunfire. Focus on something readable, stylish and flashy. Don't worry about the message. Be the change you want to be.
Hotline Miami, as I mentioned earlier, does all of the things these guys want to do but Dennaton Games thought about the implications of the game. They focused on Violence, and how it effects people. They focused on the visceral thrill of survival, the calm contemplation and horror, and how it effects the victims and the abuser. That's why everyone enjoys it, people seeking both a fun game and arthouse nerds like me who like to overanalyze stuff (and like engaging games too).
Think critically about what you enjoy and what you want to create if that's applicable. Otherwise you just wind up muddying things up and making everyone lose.

Call me fucked up, but I'm pretty excited. Looks great.
I'm glad this game wasn't announced during Jack Thompsons whiny crusade against violent video games. Besides that, this game looks like something an angsty 13 year old would fantasize about after being grounded by their parents.
2. Games are taking themselves too seriously and need to focus on being entertaining and satisfying to play.
Focusing on this bit in particular because it's something that pisses me off to no end.
Why shouldn't games be taking themselves seriously? Books, TV, film, they all do this, so why not games? It's not "counter-culture" to make a game that is almost 100% about being fun either, so I don't know where these devs are coming from. I think they might just be stupid to be honest.
Look at Metal Gear Rising, I've seen a fairly convincing and interesting theory that the subtext of the game isn't anything to do with war or whatever, but it's a counter to MGS2. MGS2, the game that tricked players into thinking they got to be the badass, that they were there to do the sneaks and nothing else. It told gamers "hey, you fucks, lets get some story in here because we should explore that", but instead just pissed guys off to no end.
MGR on the other hand does the complete opposite, it has a story, it wants to tell the story, but it gives you all the chances in the world to totally ignore the story and just be the badass you want to be. The entire game is cutting guys up and looking stylish whilst doing so, totally counter to MGS2. And hey, MGR is also a very, very fun game! More than I can say about this edgy trash from just one look at it. It has style, it has substance, it's a solid game. This? Unless they pull some "lol we trol u guys, r gaem depp", it's looking pretty grim for the substance part.
The gameplay seems too disturbing to have an enjoyable experience, like a game built entirely out of the first level of MW2. Of course the first level of MW2 wasn't supposed to be enjoyable, it was supposed to piss you off and establish the game's antagonist.
Looks like a fun time waster game I don't know how you guys are getting so gutted by it.
tbh this is the game that exactly matches the "causing school shooters" description for a game
it's basically making killing innocents look "Fun" to crazy people, VERY SPECIFICALLY. There's just no point or goal, you're just some edgy asshole killing people.
Even postal 2 had better taste, you could play the entire game without killing, but that's ALL this game is.
I'm interested to see the effect this game has.
Back when everyone legitimately thought that liking Metal turned you into a child molesting murdering suicidal depressive asshole, a song came out with the lyrics
"KILL YOURSELF, KILL YOURSELF
Why don't you kill yourself
Don't rely on no one else,
End it all, just kill yourself
Now"
and suddenly people didn't think that stuff any more.
Maybe this game and the subsequent lack of change in shootings will do something.

Not every game needs to be a Mona Lisa
So it's actually just the first Postal, even the dialogue is almost the same, along with executions.
It's just done in better graphics.

People forget that the first Postal wasn't exactly going for 'funny and gruesome' as Postal 2 was.
jack thompson's gonna have a field day with this
don't forget all the women who are hardcore against violence in video games.
anyway, i'd play it.

Doesn't RWS have postal 1 remake on their list of things to do in future?
I mean if you took away the edge and pure shitlord edge stuff, you'd have an alright game. Almost like a modern GTA 1 or 2.

GTA is purely this whole mafia, gangster stuff and it's edgy in some ways too but at least the game had story and layers upon layers of content which attracted loads of different people from wide range in demographic, this game has none of that, it's only being made to stir reaction.
I dunno, is there something wrong with indiscriminately killing npcs? as long as I can mow down the KKK rally next to the feminist rally we're all good? I think
i'll be honest i've played tons of games that are all about murdering people for no good reason (Hotline Miami is probably one of my favorite games) but something about the way this game portrays it is just really unsettling

I get your ultimate point. If someone wants to make a game about just going around and shooting stuff like Robotron or Smash TV, they should be able to do that. But taking games seriously means two things, one of which is the popular definition, the other is the lesser, but far more important definition.
1. Games need to be about something important and be cerebral ("Take the message and subtext of the game seriously")
2. Games need to be well thought out ("Take the designs/story of the game and how they affect each other seriously")
1 is not necessary and many people know this. Fun games still exist and will continue to. Wolfenstien: The New Order is generally considered a pretty fun game but it still took 2 very seriously. This game actually takes 1 more seriously than 2, and negatively impacts it's reception.
Jesus Christ, at least the Postal Dude was an actual schizo in POSTAL 1, I'm cutting myself on this character's edge.
Man if this game has a elementary school level like Postal 1 I'm sold on how off-the-rails blasted by media it's gonna be.
[editline]16th October 2014[/editline]
Actually now that I think about it, the character design is fairly close to what Postal Dude's original design was like.
The question you may ask is: why do they do this? These days, when a lot of games are heading to be polite, colorful, politically correct and trying to be some kind of higher art, rather than just an entertainment – we wanted to create something against trends.
So you're upset about games making artistic or political statements rather than just being entertainment, so your response is to make a game about making a disturbing political statement rather than just being entertainment? Seems counter-intuitive.
looks boring as fuck tbh
