I don't get why ego doesn't like subs and voice acting. I often turn subs on in games even when there is voice acting. I just like having both, in case I don't hear something or something's not as audible or if i'm not paying that much attention. It's just nice to have, I don't understand why it would make you feel sick?
words when people talk? rip my immersion

I feel like Ego's the kind of guy that goes into another world when he plays games and wants to be as immersed as possible, and eliminate any distraction. So its probably easier for him to pay closer attention to games when he plays
I can only assume these because we know how much he values the theater experience for a movie, maybe he applies that to games as well
I kinda agree with ego. I've been playing Fallout 3 recently and whenever I go to talk to someone in it I end up reading the subtitles before they can finish speaking. Since it takes up a good portion of the screen too I can't bring myself to even look at their faces. Will probably turn them off next chance I get.
I have a hard time hearing anything so I always turn it on.
I find having subtitles on useful, especially since I'm usually in a voice chat, it means I won't miss any of the dialogue due to someone shouting about how shitty they're doing in whatever game they're playing, drowning out the character. That, and I often read the subtitles at the same pace the character speaks at, especially when someone's yelling, I find it actually helps me hear them better.

To complain about it is just silly though. You can just turn them off.
sometimes I get the feeling that Jon and Ego are really naive about how the games industry works when they go into big things about "game design" elements which are usually just limited to aesthetic or controlling choices.
i don't know if he knows much about the industry itself but it seems like he has a good grasp on what makes a good game. usually. watch his sequelitis if you haven't
My issue with Ego is that he seems to dislike games because he sucks at them. His main complaint about Ocarina was that the controls were bad and he couldn't figure out how to do Z targeting? The controls were fine. I really have no idea how he fucked up that bad. I also remember he was complaining about not knowing what to do in Banjo, even though he had been skipping the tutorial dialog.
I guess we'll see what he says about Ocarina when his Sequalitis about it comes out, but his arguments so far make little to no sense to me.

When I listen to them talk about design, I feel like these two people are the two ends of a spectrum. Ego is incredibly analytical, while Jon focuses on the fun aspect. I feel like I can place myself in the middle. I can sorta see what Ego means about Ocarina, but Ocarina was amazing and is literally one of the best games I've ever played, and that's coming from someone who grew up with Crash Bandicoot and only beat Ocarina on 3DS.

I honestly must have missed something because I can't even see where Ego is coming from. It really just sounds like he had a hard time figuring out the controls and didn't like being able to not skip cutscenes (in a game with no replayability).
I mean, I love them both to death. I just think they both can be silly gam geese sometimes.
He might be talking about the mix of voice acted parts and subtitled parts (with no voice acting), not so much portions where voice actors are subtitled.
Ever since the Joe and Mac finale, I've had this mental image of right after the Goose asks what the hell Jon's doing, Jon just screeching "BUT IT'S FOR GAAAAAAHME GRUHMPS"

Ego tends to whine a lot about very basic design choices and calls them game-breaking for no reason.
I mean he has some fair points but shit sometimes he really complains just for the sake of it.

He's not even grumpy about the game he currently plays, he just whines about general game design that applies to every game.

Dude, that is like, what you do when you're grumpy.

His thing about not figuring out Z-Targeting made me do a spit-take. The first twenty minutes or so (Well, the first time you play OOT) are a fucking Z-targeting tutorial. One which goes into a little to much depth.
I want them to get back to banjo and yoshi for a whike

Their yoshi videos are amazing.
Strangely I have a hard time watching the banjo ones. Probably because I barely know the game and I'm so focused on watching the gameplay that I don't really pay attention to what they say.
[editline]2nd November 2012[/editline]
And I just love how jon talks about good games.
"This game is SO GOOOD"
Sounds like he creams his pants every time he thinks about yoshi's island or banjo & kazooie

Play it. Now.
Best N64 game. Period.

Eh I'm not really into 3D platformers.

It's not nearly as good as Megaman Legends. Everyone loves that game.
Oh man they should totally play Megaman Legends or The Misadventures of Tron Bonne.

Is this meant to be sarcastic? I really can't tell.

I never liked the Megaman franchise. Except for the RPG Battlenetwork one.

There seems to be a common trend. I think he just has a hard time doing the tutorials or something.
It might be because he's biased to the SNES since he grew up with it, which has hardly any buttons on the controller. Most games use the same control scheme (A is attack, B is jump, X is special, Y is whatever, etc), and there isn't much room to vary the controls. You can just figure it out for most games. But when you have a game like Ocarina on the N64, there is so many buttons on that controller, at least, for the time. Going from 6 buttons and a D pad to 9 buttons, a joystick AND a D pad, it's a little hard to just let people figure it out. I think it's unfair how he also doesn't consider the time it came out. It was a very ground breaking game, and people had not played a game like it before. He likes Link to the Past and makes comments about how the combat is better and makes sense, but Jon's point about it not being able to work in a 3D world, at least, not in a compelling way, is ultimately correct.

I thought the first Megaman Legends was a god damn mess, that also seems to be what a lot of reviews say. I never played the others though so maybe it got better.
