When he went uphill faster than he was going downhill. I couldn't breathe.
"The game's playing itself, Arin!"
I really liked that bit :v:
I knew it was going to be good when they got to the snowboarding sections but holy shit
made me laugh until i cried
I'm literally pissing out of my ears right now. Best episode so far!!!!
Makes me confident they wont drop sonic 06 any time soon.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but right after that snowboarding shit they have to play shadow don't they?

Nope. Each character is confined to their own story.
[sp]They do get sent into the distant future to meet Shadow and kill Islamic satan (ibliss) though[/sp]

Guess I'm remembering wrong then.

[sp]and meet sort-of-shadow? with no moving mouth or eyes[/sp]
or is that silver's run? i just remember it being really stupid and obvious, but so fringe-genius because i wasnt sure if it was just lazy modelling/animating or not, knowing the pre-beta state of the game.

I don't blame you, they're very similar things.

I just remember shadow has a snow level too.
It's Shadow's first level, I think.
And it's White Acropolis. Again.
If there's one thing that annoys me so much about the levels in Sonic 06, it's the level transitions.
In SA1, all the levels had unique, proper entrances. (The Ice level had a cavern you went through, Windy Valley has you ride a gust of wind to it, Twinkle Park is a theme park entrance etc. etc) while in 06, they're all the same "magical gates" in the middle of nowhere with no context or reason why. It's lazy and horrible.

The story of sonic 06.
8:28 in the sonic video when Jon was talking about the game playing itself

Nice self reference there.
All this time I was thinking all "Man the game can't be that bad, maybe they just aint used to the controls(after 12 videos)"
But now I realize.
with the snowboarding
this game is literally big rigs level.
They're going to love the next snowboarding level... The one that doesn't have snow
It's astounding how much worse Sonic 06' is getting as they play it.
Like, Jesus Christ, this is what a game should look like when it's 6 months before release or something, not a finished product.
I'm not complaining, though. I'm not playing it. It's sure making for some awesome episodes.
i remember somewhere in the game there was a part so ridiculously hard and tedious to do that it made me angry a shitload and i ended up not playing for a longass time.. it probably was a silver episode, which i don't remember if it was the second or third episode. i want them to do silver though, his controls were wonky as fuck.
Like, Jesus Christ, this is what a game should look like when it's 6 months before release or something, not a finished product. It's like the creators of the game just figured "fuck it, nobody will ever get this far".
They were probably six months of development into the game to begin with or something, all things considered, if the release was so bad. Sega just sorta wanted a christmas cash-grab and forced the devs to ship it out unfinished. But whether due to a lack of good ideas and design overall, or just sheer spite at Sega due to that christmas rush, it really seems like it wouldn't of been that great even without the fucked schedule.
I agree and disagree with their talk about game length.
Some games are flat out too short. Other games are too long.
Braid was perfect in length because it felt like it explored every part of it's own mechanics and then finished the game without repeating shit. In those situations game length doesn't matter.
When it comes to games like Dishonored (although I haven't played it myself) it can be a bit too short for it's price and it's game. It's the kind of game where you can build up lots of maps with various challenges forcing you to be creative with your arsenal and tactics. If you feel like you never got enough variation in the challenges then it's too short, if it feels like you're doing the same shit over and over again it's too long (and/or uncreative in it's mechanics based on it's gameplay).
I think game length complains really comes from the lack of anything else. I didn't find the story for Spec Ops: The Line interesting, at all, so when the rest of the game was generic shooter game in it's mechanics and the game as a whole was 5 hours long, it just felt too short. (yet at the same time, too long for what it gave me)
But all in all I don't know, feels like a very situational thing that depends on so many factors. But of course, as they pointed out, it all boils down to whether it was good or not. If you can't make arguments for why it was too long or short, then that isn't really valid criticism, just your own personal feeling on it that means jack shit for anyone else.
whenever they start talking about 'what makes a game good' or w/e i'm always tempted to just close the video
it's the opposite of entertaining for me
Probably because it comes of of really pretentious, mainly just Arin, I can usually respect someone's opinion even if I disagree, but when it comes to his opinions, I just don't know, they seem really, really weak argument wise, and just frustrating to listen to.

I personally think it's enlightening, it's always interesting when they analyse what they play that way

game grumps would be completely boring if all they did was ECH JON STOP LOOK AT THE GAMPLEGROOMS REAL TALK BOOM BLAMBOHARHA!
pacing is important and the serious conversations about game design give it that pacing which is nice, as long as they dont do it in a dumb way

i find that a blend of comedy and game design are the most entertaining videos
My only problem is how a lot of the time they make really bad and unfair comparisons.

did you even watch the smash brothers videos? jon absolutely REFUSED to give his opinion on wolf and fox being clones, meanwhile arin was shouting it at the top of his lungs and jon was like NO, IF THE PEOPLE WANT IT I SHALL GIVE IT, and idk about you guys but i wanted his take on it.
I lost it at "WATCH OUT FOR FAAAAAT!"
