That's just how he his.
He's like someone who stays in an otherwise caustic relationship with someone, even though it's filled with fighting and turmoil, and then when someone asks why they are still in the relationship, he just goes "I love them" because he simply just can't outright say that he doesn't want to be in the relationship for one reason or another.
And sometimes he will threaten to leave them one night and end up sleeping next to them the next night.
