I think it's just the game trying to process it all, not the framerate.

The game ties the game clock to the framerate it seems. So it has to process say... 30fps for one second of game time. If the fps dips, it has to slow down the game clock to make sure it's procssing 30fps for one second of the game.
That's a general idea.

I think their family guy comments were spot-on honestly, though I disagree that it's NEVER funny with the newer ones, it's still sometimes funny, but yeah basically after the first few seasons it just got unfunny.

I don't really get why people praise their first seasons so much, they were kind of dull for me sometimes and the series was more like a drama than a comedy a lot of the time, like the very first episodes of The Simpsons. I guess it's the hipster-ish "the first album is the best one" mindset of some people or different tastes.
I've watched until the 4th/5th season and don't know about later ones, and those were entertaining save for some things like the forced moral messages and some overly long gags.
