I work at a D&W (Local grocery chain) as a service clerk (ex: clearing bottle machines, help old people with groceries).
This one day It's really busy, i'm the only one working. I'm helping some senile old lady out to her car when this lady comes up to me while I'm walking out and asks for help with the bottle machine, I tell her I'll be right there once I take out these groceries, she grunts and walks back to the machine.
I come back in and pop open the machine and see that she inserted one of those Huge energy drink cans (Which our signs clearly say you have to take to the front since the machines are old and not built for them), I take it out, reset the machine and tell her the cans are too big, smile and tell her she can take them to the service counter though. She mutters 'bullshit' under her breath and I walk out.
Less than a minute later I hear the machine beeping again, I walk back in and she's inserted the same sized can again. I open the machine, tell her again it's too big, you can tell she's frustrated. Walk out and go to the backroom to throw out some cardboard boxes, quickly hear "*Name Here* to bottle returns, *Name here* to bottle returns.". Walk back into room only to see the same women staring me in the eyes, very pissed off. Same fucking can, while I'm pulling it out of the machine I hear her talking in a normal voice "This is just bullshit, do you know how long it took him to get up here I've been waiting for almost 10 minutes!" I hand her the can, smile on my face and calmly say "Would you like any help returning you cans?".
Also, bottle/can Return machine for States/Countries that don't have them.

It's funny how impatient people are when utilizing highly convenient services or technology that don't even exist in some places.
White people problems.
My manager and I spent a good fifteen minutes trying to explain to a customer what a pearlized balloon was. She could not get it for the life of her. She finally got frustrated and left.

what IS a pearlized balloon? :v:
what IS a pearlized balloon? :v:
It's pretty much just a shiny latex balloon.
Somebody stuffed a shitty diaper under a shelf at the retail store I work at. It was some time before people could trace the smell to the source.
All I want to know is why.

Oh I see.
Like what?
I was gonna go apply at the places this weekend, but it's a nightmare there because of Holiday shopping so they'd be too busy to get applications and stuff.
30% off all Adidas stuff, 40% at Rockport, 30% off at reebok, 8-10% off at apple, you can buy anything right out of the box if its new shipping.
We got to buy the Derrick Rose 2.0's 2 weeks before their release date because our store got them early.
I've just started working at Primark (UK) and I've realised the one thing that would make my job more bearable is A FUCKING CHAIR. Jesus Christ I'm sick of standing in the same spot for hours.

Awesome.
Problem is I don't really like any of the Adidas or Reebok stuff.
Maybe I'll find something I like.
As for Apple, The only thing I see myself buying is an iPod, and I can get it for cheaper from Walmart, pus my bros 10% employee discount.
I do imagine Adidas would be the most pleasant though. I'm really not looking forward to Aeropostale and It's like the last resort for me. :v:

But that would leave an impression of laziness on the customer!
There's no way to win.
You do get used to standing up for hours on end. I remember when I first got my current job, I had to stand on a concrete floor for hours straight. It killed at the start but my body eventually became accustomed to it.
"Can I have one of those spiral disc thingies that look like they have cinnoman in them?"
Just came as a surprise that some people don't know what a cinnoman roll/bunn is in america when they're from here.

Depending on your store, the people you work with and your managers make it awesome. My stores awesome because we all got really close quickly and stuff.
To the guys who have been working low-level for a few years: Do you think the economic collapse has resulted in generally shittier work environments? Does management feel the unemployment situation gives them more freedom to threaten, bully, coerce, and generally treat employees poorly?

Yes.

I feel like this is true to some limit.
Our managers don't threaten or bully or anything, but definitely do expect us to sell like $1,500 a day (personal goal)
But that's hard to do because people just don't have money to spend, we try to sell, add on more helpful products, but in the end they just don't have that kind of money to spend.

how can you not know what a cinnamon bun is but they're so common
also there's an easy method to getting an item if you don't know or can't remember its name: point and ask instead of calling it something idiotic and sounding like a twat
been around since the paleolithic times

Someone who wants to launder/dispose of counterfeit bills by dumping them(Dribs and drabs usually but this was obviously some sort of dumbass) into tons of different shops in a single day, However to my knowledge even large shops log usages of $100 bills, and even if they don't there's still CCTV and eyewitnesses to catch them out.
The only thing that sucks to me working in retail is when they cut your hours.
I love working at my store and like any other person loves making money.
I worked 25 hours the first week, then everyone's hour got cut to 20 hours a week, now my hours look like 15.5 a week. I don't mind it that much because I get to rest for 3 days, but still, I'd rather work and make money then relax.
I'm only seasonal help, and I've been getting 22-26 hour weeks since I started. I mean, I love working there, but I kinda need some down time. Today is gonna be my eighth day working in a row. At least my paycheck is gonna be heLLa doLLa on Friday. :v:

That's nothing. Wait until you work full time 40 hours.
A customer has started to show up regularly at my store. She always buys some kind of beer, walks out the door, stops, walks back in, asks to return it for another kind of beer. EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Today her daughter came in and bought a 12 pack. Twenty minutes later she walks in, asking to return it for two six packs of the same beer in a more expensive package. Then spends ten minutes figuring out if it is a good deal or not.

That's me alright. I guess it's just a habit I have of preferring to find something on my own than to accept help.
Still waiting to hear from the place i interviewed at, been scraping up the floor at dads for $20 an hour in the meantime.

26 hours per week isn't too bad, but it's a far cry from full-time work.
Personally, I've been working 20-32 hours per week while balancing 30-40 hours per week for schoolwork. I don't get much down time anymore :v:
This thread makes me glad my job mainly consists of watering arenas at a stable, and rarely dealing with customers.
Even then I have the occasional person who thinks I should roll up a 200 foot water hose for them every time they want to ride their horse anywhere near it. (Protip: horses have four legs. They're less likely to trip over the hose than you are.)
Oh God.
Guys.
I'm getting my first job at a fast-food establishment this week. What do I have to fear?

Depends. Are you going to be in the kitchen or up at the counter?
If the former, hot vats of oil and senior fry cooks. If the latter, EVERYTHING.

It's both, counter and kitchen, they cook the food out front.
