Suppose this isn't a story but content none the less, Every since i started working retail ive become mildly racist. Now Just so nobody thinks im some prick, i never had anything/ currently do have anything against other races, however some stereotypes are just so....accurate. For example Indian people ALWAYS ask for discounts and try to haggle with me. WTF this isn't a goddamn yard sale. Also they NEVER spend money on protection plans or any other accessory. It has gotten to the point where i dont even try anymore.(No offense to Indians i only picked on them because last night i had that same situation happen to me)
Well fuck, I have to work 9am to 9pm thanksgiving day. No delicious food and spending time with my family for me.
What's wrong with your company? Even RADIOSHACK gives its' employees Christmas and Thanksgiving off. [editline]15th November 2011[/editline]
Here's a story from my childhood. Backstory: So there was this Mcdonals we used to go to occasionally back before I moved out in the country. At the time, the N64 was a very popular console, and Mcdonalds had these arcade machines that allowed you to play some of the classics (such as Madden, Mario 64 etc). Story: So this older kid (of 10-12 years) came up to the Madden machine and starting plotting things out for his team. Then a nearby todder (maybe 5-6 years old?) walked up and tried to take over the controls, at which the older kid simply switched to mario 64, but with an angry expression on his face. Then the baby saw the mario 64 machine and tried to play that, making the older mid even mroe angry and switching back to madden. The toddler then for whatever reason wants to play madden again, and the older kid just turns to face the toddler and just starts hitting the todder on his head. as hard as he could. The toddler screams and runs back to his mommy (understandably) while my father calls me back to my table to make sure I don't get mistaken as someone involved in the conflict. After a few seconds the older kid just starts screaming obscenities because he lost a game in madden. One of the cashiers comes up to him and tries to peel the older kid away, making the kid's parents come up to the cashier. The parents go "Why are you making him stop playing". The cashier goes "Well he was hitting someone and that's clearly against our playplace rules, go eat somewhere else if your kid is going to cause a disturbance." The parents go "No, he's grown up, he can do whatever he wants." The cashier goes "No, he has to follow the rules, he breaks them, he leaves." The parents say "No he can stay because we say he can stay." The cashier balls her fist up and raises it - and suddenly the parents grab their kid and dash the resturaunt. Afterwards I overhear the cashier back at her post saying "No, I wasn't going to actually hit them, I was showing them what their spoiled brat was doing." I'm still not sure what happened to the cashier 10 years later because I don't live in that area anymore, but I hope she got a raise or a promotion.
To be fair the little kid was being an annoying pain in the ass, but yeah don't fucking hit other people. Go to the other kids' parents and ask them to make the kid stop. Fucking kids.
Man yesterday i learned that practically half of my co-workers are leaving/left. yeah i know people leave all the time from their work place but theyre all leaving at the same time and these are all of my friends. the only people whos going to be left is me and the new people working for seasonal positions. Anyone else have this happen to them? where you have close co-workers and they all just up and quit?
I've had a few people all quit at the same time at my work. So they had to hire a whole heap of new people, most with no experience so we had to train them from scratch.

Bargaining is a staple of market economy in non-Western countries (and emerging capitalist nations), and they haven't grown up here/lived here long enough to understand that the prices are generally immutable (because capitalism). It's not racist, it's just the result of cultures colliding. Racism is the act of looking down on other cultures/races as being inferior; if you don't think that the insistence on haggling is inferior, not racist.
Me and friends regularly stop at a McDonald's on our way back from seeing concerts in Detroit. Last year after an Iron Maiden show we walked in and there was this guy (probably drunk or just a fucking idiot) who asked for an extra sauce packet. Cashier: "That will be an extra 20 cents, sir" Man: "20 cents!! What the fuck!! How much is your salt? Do you charge for salt?" Cashier: "Salt is free, sir" Man: "20 FUCKING CENTS! LOOK WHAT OBAMA IS DOING TO THIS COUNTRY!" *man goes near napkins* Man: "DO YOUR NAPKINS COST 20 CENTS? HUH? *goes towards the door which is locked since it's after 11* Man: "I WANT TO COME OUT THE WAY I CAME IN" *keeps pushing on the door but it won't move. the other guy in line just goes and unlocks the door* Man: "GOD BLESS AMERICA" *leaves*
I will never understand what makes people think they have the right to treat others like shit just because they're stuck wearing a McDonald's uniform. Are minimum-wage earners just subhuman to them?

Dubai is a little different depending where you are.
Had an old Italian couple come to my checkout tonight, they went to pay and found that they were over $20 short. They didn't understand me when I said they could leave the trolley with stuff with me and go get some money from their home, which I suggest to any one who is short. I also told them that they could take things off the list. They didn't really understand. So I suspended their sale and continued on while they fretted about money. Eventually the lady says she is going to their car to find some money. So she leaves, leaving her husband to watch the trolley, obviously not trusting me with their food. The wife doesn't come back for a while and I'm serving other people. The husband starts to slowly walk away with the trolley. He slowly walks towards the car park. I notice and call after him. He completely ignores me, so I tell my manager as I walk past her following this man. She gets in front of him and tells him that he needs to pay for the food. He says that he thought his wife had already and that he needed to see her. And he tries to keep going forward but is blocked by her. She basically drags his trolley back to my register and the security guard stands watching the guy. Eventually he left and came back with his wife who had scrounged up $20 in gold coins and payed for the food. She was very apologetic when she had found out what happened.

In most (particularly the larger) retail stores/chains in Denmark, you can haggle a little off the price if you're lucky and get stuck with a good employee. Was a time where I got a 5th off the price of my 32 inch TV and got a free HDMI cable with it. :v:

When I bought my video camera I got $30 off it, just for having the money on me.
I know some local grocery stores get out at like 3PM.
I count myself fortunate to have the day off (Gamestop employee). Granted, this is backed by the knowledge that I'm working Midnight-10am the next day :v: Fuckin' Black Friday...
It's because non-Western countries aren't used to the fixed prices that Western capitalist markets usually impose. Bargaining is a staple of market economy in non-Western countries (and emerging capitalist nations), and they haven't grown up here/lived here long enough to understand that the prices are generally immutable (because capitalism).
I live in a port town so we have a lot of "seamen" (thats what they call themselves but its still funny) come into our store. Russian and Phillipino mostly. Anyway I haven't really had problems haggling with them, probably because they shop frequently enough in the U.S. I have noticed this with non-Western foreigners who aren't seamen who do this though. Sometimes they will try to insist that they don't have to pay tax too since they aren't U.S. citizens. True there are tax exampt forms but you have to be given one of those from the port and not everyone qualifies. That aside, I actually find it kind of offensive if people claim to shop in your store all the time but then refuse to get any services or accessories unless you throw them in for free. My store already has a program in place that rewards frequent shoppers. Also, if they really want to be supportive of our store, they would buy services and accessories becuase theres virtually no markup on product. All markup is on accessories and services are pure margin. If someone buy, for example, only a computer. The store doesn't make any money. So if you really like shopping at our store and don't want us to go out of business, you need to buy some services and accessories and like it. What irks me the most about retail though is when your store is really busy, like beyond fire code capacity busy, and you are bouncing from customer to customer and every now and then when you get to a customer and offer to help them they have an attitude and say something like "I'VE BEEN HERE FOR OVER HALF AN HOUR WAITING FOR HELP." Jesus lady... don't you see how busy it is? You are getting helped now so drop the attitude. The time to complain to someone was earlier. It makes me not to want even help them. And then you have people that will say something like "Is this the only people you have working today?" Like theres already like 15+ people on the floor. What do you expect us to have 100 sales associates just because theres 100 customers in the store? The store doesn't even employ that many people.
I have to say I miss working retail. Moving to Greece really puts things into perspective for me; as much as I love the laidback and beautiful island of Crete I do miss work, my car, my friends, etc.
Who buys protection plans?
People who agree with me when i tell them they are about to buy a $500 piece of glass (ipad) and not buy a plan so if they drop it (which they always do) they will be sol. Also it covers a battery replacement and that alone is worth the money.

Well. I personally have never dropped my iPod Touch in the three years I've owned it. Of course, everyone I see always seems to have a cracked phone / iPad. Hm...
