I'm not a retail worker per se but I suppose this counts.
Was selling merchandise for our yearbook (no one ever buys it) and we had a poster that had the price like this: "Keychains for $--3-- 2 (the 3 was crossed out), Backpacks for $4".
Some dumbass girls came up and said "Oh, why they cost that much? I ain't payin' no 32 dollahs for that."
I had to explain that the 3 was crossed out. It was so painstakingly obvious, a blind person could see it. [sp]It was a joke; I'm visually impaired.[/sp]

That's p.much what I did.
I made a post about it in the Health and Fitness subforum if you want to take a look. pretty effective method. It's basically what the doctors do just on a much smaller scale. All I do is damage the root so it grows very slowly.

No. I hang out in a gamestop all the time and they only ask if you have a Powerup Rewards card, and if you don't, if you want to get one. It's actually a pretty good deal. I got the pro card for $15, got a free year subscription to Game Informer, and I've already saved well over the $15 I spent from the 10% off.
Does this shit really happen..?
It happens everywhere to a degree. If you work at best buy or have bought a computer from best buy you'll know you get asked about 500 different things when all you probably want to buy is just the computer.
What most shoppers don't realize though is that there is very little margin on product anymore. In fact, some product doesn't even have a margin. Thats right, there are items that stores sell and completely break even on.
The reason customers are asked about all these other offers, products, tie-ins, services, etc, is so the store can do what stores are supposed to do, which is to make money. If a store can't make any money, then it can't run anymore. Thats why when you walk into GameStop, Best Buy, and almost everwyerhe else now, you get peddled all kinds of bullshit. If all GameStop did was sell just a game to every customer, they wouldn't be able to really exist anymore. That's why when you trade a game in for 6 dollars, they turn around and sell it for 30+ dollars. They can control the margin on used games. It's why a cable that costs 5 dollars online costs 25 dollars in a store. Online shopping is great because the deals are so much better, but when you buy online, you are buying from a warehouse. They don't have to pay for shelf space and labor because they aren't a store.
A lot of people like to blame Wal-Mart, but if you are familiar with the way retail works, you will notice like I have whenever you go into Wal-Mart, there are more and more aspects of Wal-Mart turning into any other store that peddles a bunch of extra shit when all you want is a toothbrush. But Wal-Mart is changing with the times too. It's online retailers that are causing this to happen. But its not their fault that buying online is more effecient. If you don't want to be peddled to, then just buy online. If you can't wait 3-7 days for your stuff to arrive at your house, then know that the trade off is that you are going to be badgered by a salesman at the store.
Hahahaha, I went into a GameStop last Thursday to get UMvC3, the cashier chick says "Have you heard about our PowerUp Rewards Card?"
"Yeah."
"Are you interested in it?"
"No"
"K, I tried thanks."
It's kind of sad how beat she looked. Like Joker in Full Metal Jacket when he did the 100 yard stare. Blank eyes, no more fight left in her.
Hobblin don't lump Best Buy into reputable stores like GameStop and RadioShack.
I have friends in Best Buy, Game Stop, I practically live at the local gamestop, and I work at RadioShack. I can guarantee that Best Buy is by far the absolute worst. They offer so much extra bullshit and they put more focus on making money than even the customer.
Game Stop only ever really pushes preorders and their power up cards. RadioShack mainly pushes service plans for electronics (when, honestly, 80% of the time they're worth it. i.e. we have a 3 year, $0.99 service plan for ALL cables. Including those $50 HDMI cables. And you get it replaced for free.) and LiveStrong Donations. But the LS doesn't turn us a profit at all.
Best Buy pushes credit cards, god knows how many other offers, surveys, etc.

Because you were one in a long line of people that just flat out refuse things without listening to the person. We're not asking shit to piss you off we're asking it because it's our job and if we don't we get fired.
Honestly though the power up card is pretty goddamn cool. One of them is FREE and you get discounts and points for purchases and shit. How is that hurting you?
Even the one that's paid is a good deal. It's $15 and you get a free year of Game Informer (which by itself costs more than $15) and with 3 game purchases you save more than you spent (10% discount on all purchases).
Powerplay Cards are fricking awesome. I'm hoping Gamestop has branches in North Dakota... Would kill me if I couldn't use my 5,500 points gathered over the few months I've had the card.
About a year back I was applying for jobs at the local stores/shops [Starbucks, Safeway, Mcdonalds..], and while I was applying at Starbucks/Gamestop I decided to get myself some coffee and ended up seeing a scene that made me want too scream in someones face.
I'll be honest, I'm a tad aggravated by Spanish[The language]. Not because it isn't cool to have different languages, but the fact I've grown up close to the border[Arizona] has given me a really piss-off outlook regarding different languages.
This day at Starbucks though... Made me want to yell. The day started with me just talking too the barista whom I was good friends with while getting my odd-drink which was a Pumpkin/Ginger Spice Latte mixture with shots of classic. I can't remember exactly what we were talking about, but I believe it was my aggravation on how most jobs required you too be 18. After I got my drink I sat back on a stool, and chilled back. Then a lady of Mexican decent came in, and at first she was talking in English with someone over the cell-phone. Not Spanglish either... FLUENT English. Now when this lady gets up to the stalls she starts talking in Spanish. The barista whom was serving looked confused, and stated in a calm voice "I'm sorry mam, I don't understand Spanish" then... All hell broke loose.
The lady began calling her every fricking name in the book in Spanish and English. Saying she was a bad worker and she was retarded because she couldn't understand Spanish. The lady then took stuff in the food-stand and threw it too the ground, and stormed out the door. I looked over at the barista and asked, "You alright?" she replied "Yeah... Just gotta get a mop"
I seriously wanted to go after the lady who threw the shit on the floor and yell at her. The only thing going off in my mind was, 'who the fuck does she think she is?'... I mean its enough to yell at someone, but then act like a spoiled brat because you don't get your way and cause damage that employees have to fix is fucking disgusting...
Luckily for the burista, myself and a few college kids helped her clean up the huge mess that was caused by the lady.... But.... Too this day... I have a heavy distaste for anyone who demands Spanish when they can speak English.
I don't know about any of you guys, but doesn't it bother you that EVERY FUCKING STORE has some kind of "rewards" card they want you to sign up for? The video posted above describes my anger perfectly. I've had a Best Buy "RewardZone" card for like, 4 years, bought THOUSANDS worth of merchandise, and I still have yet to see ANY FUCKING REWARD.

Yeh most of the time they suck hard, but in the UK game and waterstones have decent money off after a few purchases (Game has gotten steadily worse though)
I avoided those cards like the plague, but in game the guy explained to me how I could spend 2 quid getting the card, get 3 quid off the game I wanted and use the spare quid to buy another game from the 1 quid + card rack.
In other words I got a free game for the same price, and when the original Xbox came out I got it 10 quid cheaper, then with 10 quid off from stored points.
Now though it's every few months I get 2.50 off, which sucks.
I'm out of work at the end of the year, do stores need much in the way of qualifications? I have only GCSE's but boatloads of experience.

I've had a GameStop rewards card for 8 months, I've saved well over $150+ with it, made over $50-$100 extra in trade in value, and even got some free games with it.
Right now I'm sitting on 17,000ish points. I could get a shitload of free stuff if I wanted to.
I'm also getting a free monthly magazine from Game Informer from it.
I'm feeling pretty rewarded.

Spanish speaking people should full well know that when they go into an American franchise that there is a pretty big chance that they'll have to speak English to get what they want.
But people are spoiled, entitled assholes. Not a lot we can do about that.

We only have one shop that has a rewards card, and I don't go to it.
At the one that I normally go to the manager knows who I am. And they don't have any sort of reward points, sure when you preorder a game he tells you about the trade in scheme but he's stopped doing that now.
My supervisor told me I was not worth wasting time and money and that I was an unreliable, excuse making employee, etc because I'm leaving for army basic training in three weeks. She got mad at me because I had to take off tomorrow to meet my recruiter to get my ID card, and she claims I hung up on her when I was in the middle of another important call and told her, "I'm extremely sorry, very very sorry, but I'm on another call at the moment, and I can't speak now. I will call you as soon as I can after this call." to which she responded, "so you're just going to hang up on me?" I was like "no, I'm just on anther call... I will call you back when I get the chance..." and she said in a passive aggressive tone, "fine, do what you want."
If you're leaving for the army in 3 weeks, I would've just told her to wind her neck in or fuck off. The single worst thing about retail IMO, is not even the customers or the mundane work, it's dealing with self important twats who are bitter about their position in life and go on power trips in managerial positions.

This is kind of true to some degree. This may not be the case in the US where the economy is much worse off, but my observation has been there are a large amount of people who settle for retail/minimum wage jobs in the long term, despite there being far better paying jobs if they just looked or put in some effort.
At any given time there are a number of unskilled physical labor jobs going in my area that pay fantastically well, but people will settle for a job stacking shelves all day, because the better paying job actually involves hard work.

Ignore that guy he's just a poor troll.
As far as jobs go, it is pretty common in the US to not have a choice. I work retail because I had been looking for a job for MONTHS and when I got a call saying "You're hired come on in and do some paperwork" I wasn't going to fuck around and be like "Ohhh well let me look around a bit first". Especially later when I found out I was picked over 3 other better qualified candidates just because I had spoken at length to the manager and had a well written resume.
That's not to say I'm lazy, though. When I lived in Chicago, I fought tooth and nail to get a job with the BNSF Railway line up along the Chicago Metra line from Aurora to Union Station. It paid $25/hr and was unionized, but it would have been EXTREMELY hard work. I almost got the job. I wish I had, if I had gotten it I wouldn't have had to move away.

Maybe it varies by state? Every black friday I have worked (which is a lot of them, though at various different stores) I have seen people routinely have 14 hour shifts. I'm working a 13 hour shift this year, but I have worked 12 hours every other year.
Honestly tomorrow is gonna suck more for me than black friday. I work at one of my jobs (Best Buy) from 6am to 2:30pm and then my other job (CVS) from 4pm to 10pm. Even though I get an hour and a half break between the two, and a thirty minute break at Best Buy in the morning, that is still 14 hours total of working, over a 16 hour period. What sucks worse is I'm gonna have to try to stay up even later than 10pm when I get off (gonna try to stay up for about 24 hours, because I'll need to sleep all day thanksgiving so I can go back to Best Buy at 9pm Thanksgiving night to work our midnight black friday opening and get off at 10am friday morning.
