I have the coolest job and the coolest manager ever. I work at a hotel, but it's an extended stay type hotel, mostly just business travelers and people who need a long term place to stay while they relocate, so we're not very busy at night. In fact, the front desk closes at 11pm.
This week I'm working the 11pm to 7am shift, and there isn't much I actually have to do, but someone has to be here the whole time. So my manager is letting me bring my xbox in to work. This week I get paid $10 an hour to sit on my ass in a vacant room and play Skyrim all night.
I love my job, but today the police came with a search warrant for a guest's room and threatened to knock down his door with a huge battering ram thing if I didn't give them a key. I was really fucking nervous and they wouldn't let me call my manager about it. I convinced one of them to call my manager himself instead and she showed up and they sorted everything out and arrested the guy.
The guy they arrested seemed like such a nice guy. I had checked him in myself a couple days prior, and we had a short chat about his upcoming trip all the way to California (I live in North Carolina) and how he was glad he had just signed up for AAA because of all the money he was going to save at the hotels. I had no idea when he checked in that he would end up leaving in handcuffs.
Last year, the Manager and the assistant Manager of the bargin variety store where I work quit.
Theb Easter Saturday this year, the ex-assistant manager came to the store came up to the current Manager asking weather we had any of these Cadbury easter eggs left. It was the last one on the shelf and the day before Easter.
My boss responded with 'If there are none left on the shelf, then it is the last one.'
The ex-Assistant manager that came up to me and I responded in the same way.
The most annoying part of this is that the ex-Assistant manager had been woorking at the store before she quit for 4 years and countless years in retail before this. Both me and the current manager thought they should have know that if it was the day before easter, what ever was on the shelves is what we have left. If we had anything left out the back or on the overheads, it would have been a terrible idea.
Do you work at Sams warehouse or any Retail adventures chain by any chance

If its a good ammount cheaper just tell the person helpion you and its fine. (I would dop the same) Just dont come profit of our knowledge when you know you are not going to buy annything.

It's not that they're using you I don't think. Obviously they've come into your store to purchase said item, but they just want to get it as cheaply as possible as well. I don't think anyone is going to willingly enter a store to waste someone's time when the other store would be just as capable at helping them. It's more or less Stopper's story.

We have a serious problem here with 0 knowledge box shover stores. My previous employer was next to a Media Markt which often would send people to us to ask questions and select a model only too go back an buy them "cheaper" at their store. like 5%.
My current store has people coming over from all over the country to buy stuff using our knowledge and service.
I'm not kidding about this one I have multiple costumers a day who drive more then 3 hours to get to us. Which is alot in this small country. This also means that people who havnt even bought stuff at our store come in with questions about stuff they bought somewhere else, or to come make a shopping list for stuff they are gonna buy from internet stores.
I usually refuse to help them further if I find out half way trough the convo that they are not buying annything or im fixing a problem for a device not even bought here. We are not free tech support.
Anyone else have a hard time with old people? I've had two customers today who couldn't follow anything that I said.
The first one was looking for a wine in the section next to the hard liquor. Kept complaining that she couldn't find any wine because she kept looking in the liquor section even after I repeatedly pointed out/showed to her she was looking in the wrong part of the store.
Another one started to argue with me that the placement of a particular type of wine was wrong and it had always been somewhere else when I was one of the three people who setup the store when we changed locations and know for a fact it has never moved.

Right jeeze forgive me, how could I ever overlook the massive contribution that is a retail staff telling where an item is or scanning it for its price.
This is totally worth $5 or so someone might save by going to another store where the item they want is cheaper.
Please tell me you are fucking joking. It's not common courtesy, you are a dick if you think it should be.
Ragging on people for trying to save money in this economy is fucking retarded.
I had a real doozy of a customer today.
Some older black woman came into the store, already armed with a bad attitude, and asked me if we recharged and/or fixed batteries. I told her we don't, we just recycle old batteries. She immediately gets pissy and tells me that someone else from this store told her that you could come in and we'd recharge the batteries. I apologize for the inconvenience, and tell her that unfortunately the other employee was mistaken, we do no such thing (We really don't.)
I ask her if she needs a battery replaced, and for like 5-10 minutes she keeps going on about the recharging thing, even though I keep repeating that "I'm sorry, but we don't recharge or fix batteries.". She finally roughly hands me a phone and tells me she needs a replacement battery for it, and that her husband came in yesterday to get one. So I go over to the batteries to find one.
The only two we have that matched the voltage and amperage had the wrong tip. So I go over and tell her that unfortunately, the only two we have that would power the phone have the wrong tip and wouldn't fit. She gets really pissy at this and tells me again that her husband bought a battery from us yesterday (I wasn't at work yesterday). I apologize, tell her that he might have gotten the last one in stock, and go to look at the two again.
I compare the tips of the two that matched power requirements side by side with hers and neither match. One was completely different, and the other one's holes were larger and spaced a little farther apart.
I go back and tell her this and she almost blows up in my face, repeating, again, that her husband bought one yesterday. My coworker comes over to try and help and I tell him what's going on, so we go back over and he manages to make the second battery fit in the phone, although the connection is a bit dubious, it powers on. I go to get her the two batteries, starting to apologize for the inconvenience and explain what happened, when she interrupts me with "Nuh uh, no. I don't want your help, you go away. Let the other man tend to me, he knows what he's doing."
So I set the batteries down and go into the back room. As I open the door, she calls after me "That's right! You go to the back where you belong!"
What a cunt.

Well, not at my job, but I'm sure everyone on this forum has dealt with PC repairs for their grandparents, and after fixing their problem several times for free, they STILL decide to go hire the dick who charges like $40/hr and probably ends up browsing the internet for two hours.

I will never understand what compels people to treat their fellow man with such utter contempt and disrespect, especially when the employee is being as polite as possible.
I know it's cliche to say that it feels like the public views retail workers as subhuman but...it really feels that way sometimes.

Did you even read the rest of my post? I dont know what kind of stores you are used to there but we do way more then "telling where an item is or scanning it for its price".
If you spend half an hour or more explaining everything there is to know about stuff you sell and selecting the right components for a client, only to have them walk out saying thanks for the shopping list. Its frustrating.
I currently sell, Professional audio, hifi and Tv's. Thats a shitload of info you need to know about a shitload of stuff. People come in telling me what they want and I match that to what is available. The main part of the people who come in do not have a product in mind when they enter the store and rely on us to match to advise them. Most that do have a product in mind are usually swayed away from it due to all the things they did not think or know about when they selected that product.
I am not saying we have a complicated job but there is way more to it then pointing out the products location.
Like I said before: We are not free tech support.
Everything is made down to a price, and made to be cooked quickly, for example the burgers are made to contain large amount of water so they cook fully in about 90 seconds, quality has definately gotten worse.
Well, it's a given that it's made to be cheap, but did you know that McDonalds use the highest grade beef available in the UK? Considering the end product, it's crazy.
Anyway, ask me anything about being a bartender in a tiny craft beer bar!

At least they aren't as blind as someone walking past a massive stack of toilet paper to ask me to get him down some from the overheads because he was that fucking blind that he missed the massive PILE that was right next to him.
I showed him the toilet paper stack yet he insisted that I get him the same stuff off the overheads and that he said he would go to my boss and complain if he didnt get it.

Get to sample products when they come on tap (constantly rotating) and also get a nice discount on bottles from our shop.

Do you guys get paid by commission? Because if not then this shouldn't be something that you should be crying about.
I help customers and explain what the different lines of clothing that Adidas makes and what benefits each has for each different activities and they usually just tell me that they will come back and just don't come back.
It doesn't bother me that I helped them and they walked away. Honestly you shouldn't be complaining, you helped them but they wanted to go to a different store and get it cheaper when its the same thing.
Stop crying honestly.
I have a question for you people who work in the food business(restaurants, fast food etc) . What happens if a customer does not have enough money to pay for the food they ordered? May sound like a dumb question but I've always wondered.

If you were an American, I'd agree, but the economy's not that bad in Australia, we have nothing to complain about.
However that could change if big ears gets in power.

It's not that. Regardless of America or Australia, I've worked in retail before too, and I'm not about to call someone an asshole for running to a competitive store and getting it for a cheaper price. At the end of the day, the only thing you should care about is that the store you work for is paying you the right amount of money.
"we're not free tech support" Fine. Don't like giving out information only to see a customer run off to a competing store? Stop giving free information. After all, it's not your job right? So if that bothers you so much, why do it?
Also yeah the economy isn't America bad in Australia, but it's not great either. I have a job that pays very well for what amounts to unskilled physical labor, but I damn sure going to try to get the cheapest possible option for anything that costs over $100.
Given the average age group on FP, I don't think a lot of these kids realize how expensive life gets when you don't have a mother paying for all your living expenses. $5 saved here and there goes a long way later on.

Of course I get comissions.
And no offence but you cant really compare the knowledge you need to sell clothing to what you need to know for electronics. (nor can you compare the money involved).
Seeing the comments I get from Americans here it makes me think you dont even have the type of store I work in, just bigger box shoving best buy type stores.
