Fuck, I wanted to apply for a Best Buy sales associate job but one of the qualifications is at least 6 months experience of retail sales and I have none
This is the problem. Everyone wants a worker who has experience but if you have none, it's a catch 22. [editline]7th December 2011[/editline] Which is sort of my problem, so I may have to just volunteer somewhere.
You think they would look at my application even if I didn't have 6 months experience, or would they just throw it away the second they see I have no experience?
First thing they do is sort out everythign that doesn't meet all of the criteria, then check who is better. (Simplified, but basically how it works)
I wonder if having a high school diploma + some college would help my case.... Oh well. I'm starting to run out of jobs to send applications to, only choice I'll have left is fast food...

I'd sooner work at Macy's or Dillard's than fast food [editline]7th December 2011[/editline] Oh wow, the job I applied for at Safeway is the only job spot open in a ~50 mile radius. This is going to suck
Fuck, I wanted to apply for a Best Buy sales associate job but one of the qualifications is at least 6 months experience of retail sales and I have none
Apply anyway. The worst they can do is not call you back. Also if you get an interview, they might talk to you about working in the warehouse or something similar if they don't feel you are experienced enough to work on the sales floor.
The problem is that I'm only 17, and it's 18 or older for warehouse stuff. If I could, I would work in warehousing
The problem is that I'm only 17, and it's 18 or older for warehouse stuff. If I could, I would work in warehousing
Listen i applied for the cashier job at BB only because it was my 1st job and like you, i didn't have 6th months experience. after my 3rd interview the GM asked me where i wanted to work and what my strength were, i told him i know about PC's and here im about to leave for work (at BB) and im a sales associate. as for the age im only 17. On top of that, its the holiday season so they are hiring like mad (temps that is ) and if you are good enough they keep you after the season. Take my advice and APPLY.
The shotgun approach is the approach you want when applying for a job.
The shotgun approach is the approach you want when applying for a job.
I find if I walk into a store with a toy shotgun and demand a job I'm escorted from the premises.
I find if I walk into a store with a toy shotgun and demand a job I'm escorted from the premises.
The shotgun approach != Approach with a shotgun :v:
The shotgun approach is the approach you want when applying for a job.
I couldn't agree more. Last summer when I first started looking for work I applied for around 70+ different jobs online and got only one callback, luckily that would also become my first job. Applying everywhere you can think of is usually the best way to go; in this economy no one can be picky about where they want to work.
The shotgun approach != Approach with a shotgun :v:
Lets not argue semantics here!
...I've been at Gamestop for 2 years and even after two promotions I'm making less than $9 an hour. I clearly went for the wrong job.
Introductory wage for me with no job experience, no knowledge in the products was $10/hour. 21 months later I'm earning $14.50/hour. Government regulated liquor stores yeah!
Just worked my first shift at the local supermarket today. 8PM until midnight. Got stuck facing shelves the entire time. I took fucking forever to do the first isle which was pet food and such (I was being too precise with all of the small, finky items apparently). Picked up the pace with subsequent isles, though. Managed to cut my leg through my trousers with the box cutter I was given (it's, well, faulty for a lack of better words - it won't close properly, so the blade keeps popping out), so I stuck it in the breast pocket of my shirt. Later on it fell out of there and cut my finger slightly while I was bending over to pick up some cardboard. All in all a GREAT first day of work.
Second day (last night) was a MUCH more fun day at work. The manager who had been present on Monday wasn't there, so one of the guys on the shop floor who I was talking to in the break room decided to take me under his wing and get me to stock shelves with him instead of being pushed off to the side to do something boring like facing again. I was really dreading work again after my first day, but I feel good about going back now. On my first night I was isolated away from the rest of the team, had nobody to talk to, was stuck doing something boring and trivial, but last night I met a bunch more of the guys and had a generally more fun time wizzing around the shop finding where stuff went. [editline]9th December 2011[/editline] Also: woohoo! My pay goes up today (I'm 19 today). I think it increases by like $3/hour.
So, where I live, the Tesco I work at is dependant on ferries to bring the trucks with all our shit on them. Due to the magnificently named Hurricane Bawbag, all the ferries were cancelled and there are no trucks coming in today. I'm working 4 hours tonight, 5 - 9 PM and this is at £7 an hour. I have nothing to do this whole time. It's also supposed to be blizzarding outside, so who knows what's gonna happen. Basically, I'm getting paid £7 an hour tonight to do nothing.

If you're called in to work 8-midnight, you know you've got it's good. $22 AUD an hour for a casual shift and hardly any customers.
well I had to convince my managers to let me come home early. the roads got pretty fucking atrocious during the couple of hours I was at my work. glad I left early and got a lift, waiting an extra 3 hours for my bus would be terrible.
i work like 500 meters away from me
I would rather be worked off my feet than be bored doing nothing.
I'm on like $14.10 an hour now.. woo retail :/
I'm on like $14.10 an hour now.. woo retail :/
Pfft, I'm on ~$9 and I've been with the company for two years. Count yourself lucky.
Wow fuck you our government pays for shit
What. That's even less than our minimum wage. First time i worked i earned $26 USD an hour when i was seventeen.
Pfft, I'm on ~$9 and I've been with the company for two years. Count yourself lucky.
Ive been working at kroger for 4 years and i make $8.10 an hour

In the United States, $14.5/hr is a very high wage for unskilled labour. For example right now I'm making $7.31/hr unskilled retail. He's making double what I am.
What. That's even less than our minimum wage. First time i worked i earned $26 USD an hour when i was seventeen.
$26 USD at 17? I'd be over the fucking moon if I was earning that. That said, is the cost of living higher where you are?
