man i really want to work at a Museum i remember my "local" science Museum once had a job offering for an imax DOME projectionist, no experience required. if i didn't have to drive 30 min to get there i totally would have done that kick ass job this guy could have been me :( [editline]18th December 2011[/editline] oh and the theater forces the audience who are waiting in line for entry to walk past the projector that is on its own stage with fancy lights i could have been a god
my best guess is that you live near san jose.
Well, I've been working at Sainsburys for a month now.. I don't know what I was expecting after going in reading all of your stories, but I think I got off lucky. All of the management are really nice guys. They help me when I need it, leave me alone when I need it. I dropped a glass jar of something yesterday, three of them ran over to make sure I was OK, THEN proceeded to help me clean it up. Stuff like that doesn't even get docked from your pay. Stuff like this is why I'm happy to work 11:00 - 7:30 on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve on top of my normal hours. It's strange too, the store has been dead these last two weeks running up to Christmas, there have been busy spells, but apart from those I've been finding myself finishing all of my work 2 hours into my shift then helping out all the other departments after..
Christ, which store do you work at? Obviously can't have been Bromley. :)
Nice one yesterday. I sold a tv which has a glass plate on the front to a girl who's last name was Ramp (which means disaster in dutch)<-- I am not making this shit up. She paid and took it home only to show up half an hour later with a smashed tv. She aperrently hit her bed while setting it up, and the glass front shattered. We happen to know that this glass front is fragile because we also had this happen in the shop once. So she came back with it to see what we could do for her. Since the tv was a total loss and she admitted that she smashed it into her bedframe this would be entirely her fault and we wouldnt have to replace annything. So I went to my manager to see what could be done, explaining to him that we also smashed the same type of tv once and that it might just be crappy built quality. To my surprise he actually agreed just to give her a new one for free and book up the broken tv as an internall loss. Merry Christmas!
See, I like places like that. If you just bought a big ticket item and something catastrophic happens to it within a day or two (like the front shattering...), I can't imagine them just being like "WHELP SORRY BUT THAT'S HOW IT GOES. THANKS FOR THE $1000 LOL". Within reason, that is. or I could be totally out of touch with how retail like that works, I don't know :zoid:
Motherfucking gypsies. I can't understand you, and I know when you ask me something your mate is gonna rip the tags off those jeans and run the fuck away while I answer your question. [editline]26th December 2011[/editline] Also, In New Years Eve and New Years day without additional pay since I'm just a temp. At least the Christmas musics ceased and we get the normal music cd back.
Had boxing day yesterday which is like black friday for Australia. Was going fine until I had to cover the security guards lunch on the door. Had an old lady refuse to show me her purse saying its her personal belonging. I showed her the 50 signs up at the door stating that if you enter you agree to have your bag checked. I tried to reason with her that it isnt a big deal, but she just kept refusing to and asked for the manager. I just told her to get out. It was way too busy to deal with that shit. Also a few minutes later this father and her daughter came up. The daughter was like 14 and dragging two ~30" tvs behind her. This is literally the conversation with the father, "Hey how are you doing, can I see the receipts for the tv's really quick?". "You can see my fist to your chin if you want". Its like my brain decided to ignore it, I just stayed cheery and kept working.

If it's customer fault (No fault of the store or anything) retail stores actually aren't even supposed to take the item back. It's a corporate thing. We don't claim responsibility for that kind of shit. I know it's kind of a crappy thing to do, but if we replaced every Tom, Dick, and Harry's TV that broke at home we'd be out of business. Though it is an extremely nice thing that Taipan's manager did. I hope he doesn't get fired for it. Well, the worst day of the holiday is officially over, and I can look forward to at least a few months of the job returning to "normal." Was one hellish day from about 2-7pm though. We were busier than Walmart or Radioshack :|
One of my friends who used to work at the supermarket I'm working at now advised me not to get a job there and said that they treat you like shit. I've only been there for about 3 weeks now but I'm starting to see what he means.
Yay Boxing Day sales rush is over! Shit I'm getting out of retail. For real this time. I have my diploma, I'm not working another christmas in retail.
I showed up at work at 3:30AM and I thought it was odd the back fire door was open but than I turned the corner and the Fire Department was there. They didn't let us in the building and in the end they told us to go home, but we get paid anyway so I get another day off. [img_thumb]http://i.cubeupload.com/x6VlFy.jpg[/img_thumb] I guess the Mexican's floor buffer caught fire and filled the place with smoke and they couldn't turn on the ventilators because there was too much smoke still, which doesn't make any sense to me.
Oh fuck yes, I got a call back from a Target I applied at. Anyone have any tips for what I need to bring to the interview, etc.? This is my first job interview I've ever had and I really don't want to fuck it up

If the job interview is a success, I'll be a cart-pusher just like some of you guys :v:
If the job interview is a success, I'll be a cart-pusher just like some of you guys :v:
Oddly enough, cart pushing was one of my favorite parts of working at our local supermarket. Meant I didn't have to deal with customers (much), kept me outside, and I got to listen to music.
I'm not even joking when I say, I have nightmares from working retail. Heres why. I got a call today at 4 in the fucking morning, 2 hours after I hit the hay, from my angry balled headed prick-of-a boss saying that I was supposed to be at work. So I miss read my schedule and saw it as 4-8PM? The store doesn't even open until 7 am(Holiday hours, it's a 24/7 store), out of curiosity around 2 am I rode my bike up to the store to see if it was open, it wasn't there was shit everywhere cause they were waxing the floors, and the door was closed and lights off. (Doesn't look like they'll be opening for a while). 2 hours later my boss is freaking out at me on the phone as gazed around ay my pitch dark bedroom not knowing what the fuck is going on. I just told him I was sick and I've been trying to get a hold of them before I went to bed telling them I wouldn't be able to come in. He replies "OK", and hangs up as I'm explaining... Fuck him. [editline]27th December 2011[/editline] They cut my hours in half along with everyone else who works there, and then "OH we need to you to work any time 24 hours around the clock! Even though I work 8 hours weekly as a part timer and a student. My boss expects us to RUN, or walk at a speed you can almost call running, while I carry a 300lbs deck full of groceries, in a jammed fucking packed grocery store with customers who don't understand the concept of getting out of the way. I'm sorry but I'm not Casper the ghost, I cant just fly through people. [editline]27th December 2011[/editline] I think my employers rating speaks for itself: http://www.ratemyemployer.ca/employer/employer.aspx?empID=2399&l=en

I work at a Gas Station that has a coffee shop inside. It fucking sucks. Worst thing that happened? Well, to start off, we accept empty beer bottles and cans for a 10 cent return. The bottles aren't so bad, because we just stack them and forget about them. The cans, however, we have to throw into a 7 foot tall box. Once the cans are in there, you're not getting them out of there. No way to check, count, or confirm the contents of the box. Anyway some genius decided it was a good idea to try and scam us by saying he'd have 10 bags of 96 cans, which equates to 96 dollars. He told 2 co-workers and I that he had already put the cans in. We all knew the guy, we trusted him, so we just paid him out. He did this about 5 or 6 times, 2 of them to me and the other 3-4 times to the other workers. My dumbass co-worker who can barely count to 50 received an anonymous "tip" that he had been stealing, and sure enough, not even 30 minutes after receiving this tip he had returned to steal some more money. One thing led to another and we found he had been scamming us. Obviously my boss was upset about this. My boss, by the way, is the biggest fucking ass-pain I've probably ever met. She 'frowns upon' us sitting down during our shift, and wishes we 'would work more'. In reality, she yells at us if we don't clean 24/7. However, the way the store is laid out, it's impossible to clean and watch the store/gas pumps at the same time. She's also very greedy, which actually plays a part in this whole situation. Anyway back to the whole can thing, she approached me at the beginning of my shift and informed me of everything that happened. She told me that she had called the police and they were basically going to lure him to the store, and if he didn't pay the money back, he'd be arrested. I was also informed that if he didn't pay back, I'd have to pay $500 dollars in damages. My monthly income is $800, by the way. I was incredibly upset, and not to mention stressed out the entire day. The idea of losing 2 and a half weeks of salary is unacceptable. Regardless, she told me that I was the one to be held responsible if he didn't pay up. The day passed, and I dreaded the next morning. I arrive the next morning with an empty stomach and heavy heart. I honestly expected that I'd be working for nothing, all because my stupid boss doesn't know the meaning of proper security. As I walked in, my boss told me that he was coming in some time during my shift to pay the damages. I was so relieved, and it certainly made my shift more bearable. Well, it was bearable until around the last hour. He hadn't shown up and the stress came flooding back. I left that night, and hardly slept at all. I didn't work the next day, but I went in anyway to check if he had paid. Luckily, he did indeed pay the damages. My co-worker, who I'll just call Kim, told me all about it. It turns out that this fellow, who I'd known for quite some time, was going to school to become a cop. He basically stole $350 dollars from a store, and expected to become a police officer. I was blown away, really. But, that was just the beginning. Originally, my boss told me that I had to pay $500 in damages, while Kim told me it was only $350. I asked her why our boss was supposedly going to make me pay $500. her response: "Make YOU pay? She told ME that I had to pay the damages..." We were both confused. I called my other co-worker and sure enough, our boss had told her the same. We were all furious, and so we confronted our boss. She said, in a calm, collective voice, that she never said anything like that and insisted that "we stop lying about it." I decided to back off, and so did my co-worker, Kim. My other co-worker felt the need to actually try and fight her about it, but nothing came of it. She apparently talked to her Lawyer, who said that nothing could be done because none of us actually had to pay any damages. Works for me. The part that frustrated me the most was that this fucking asshole was going to school to be a cop. We weren't the only store he had done it too, either. He was basically wanted in the city closest to us, and we received the tip from another gas station about 20 minutes down the road. The guy was a fucking idiot, and he honestly deserved to be charged. He doesn't have a criminal record, but he's probably going to have one somewhere down the line. Reflecting on it, I guess we were really dumb to trust him.
Your boss sounds like a honking great wanker.

Reflecting on it, I guess we were really dumb to trust him.
Your boss sounds like a power hungry cunt... but I do have to point out that it was your coworker's bad/your bad for not counting the cans. I used to work at Vons, there when people brought in cans/bottles we had to count them individually, by hand, and pay them accordingly. I never, ever trust anyone with my job; if someone tells me they have 96 cans in a bag, I'm dumping them on the sidewalk and counting the fuckers since it's just not worth the hassle.
So I have 4 workers and make them all pay 500$. I'll personally hire a guy to scam you if I can do that afterwards.
Oddly enough, cart pushing was one of my favorite parts of working at our local supermarket. Meant I didn't have to deal with customers (much), kept me outside, and I got to listen to music.
I've been holding off on posting in this thread until now, since I've seen this post. I'm a cart pusher and I can't stand it. I'm the guy who has to work outside, in the snow and in the rain. We have to deal with a surprising amount of bullshit, actually. The only exception to when we aren't allowed to work outside is when there's thunder and lightning, and that's the only exception. In Ohio, we get a lot of snow, and a lot of rain, both of which suck. We're not allowed to listen to music where I work, as far as I know, and even if we were, that'd actually most likely be a hindrance because we have to pay a lot of attention to our surroundings. Things I have to deal with: -Falling apart corrals, which make the job a bigger pain to deal with because it stops the cart pusher machine. -Customers being assholes (but that's what everyone here has to deal with, so that shouldn't matter) but in this case I've had a customer pull up nearly causing an accident, because the prick didn't want to wait for us to get the line of carts we were bringing in out of the way so they could pass. -Stupid people, god there is so much stupid I'm astounded that these people can function. When a sign says "PLEASE PLACE CARTS IN THE OPEN SIDE >>>" people put it in the wrong side anyways. -Lazy people. It's as simple as pushing carts up so that they don't either go backwards, or so other people can put their cart in. People who park near or in handicapped spots seem to suffer from this, they just put them against the lampposts. I get that they're disabled and possibly can't take them to the cart bays, but the cart corrals are just a few cars over. -Shitty equipment. I have to deal with a cart pushing machine that has a habit of going to the side on its own, which nearly causes accidents sometimes, and other times it causes issues (see the next one) and to top it off the velcro on the safety vests is usually off, we don't have enough vests, even. -The cart corrals aren't cemented. This means they move all over the place, and (rather frequently) blocks the cart machine from pushing the carts out, then you have to move the machine back, then pull the corral back one way or another, which (for someone like me) requires you to use your back to pull, unless you have someone else to help. -Sometimes there's just not enough carts to bring in, and management just FLIPS THE FUCK OUT. -Sometimes there's too much traffic which makes you pause on bringing in carts until the path clears, otherwise (in my opinion) you're gambling on causing an accident. Overall, it sucks, in my opinion.

"An example of when you had to lead someone or a group." etc. I do think they asked "Why do you want to be part of the Target team?" and I was like "I love logistics (I applied for backroom) and I love Target, the store is always clean, the staff is always friendly and I'd like to work in that atmosphere." etc. I lucked out because no one else showed up to the interview, orientation or training except me. I milked my JROTC stuff, community service and the fact that I've done manual labor like wood splitting and so on because it was relevant to the job. (They're not going to hire a small, weak kid to unload a truck) [editline]28th December 2011[/editline]
If the job interview is a success, I'll be a cart-pusher just like some of you guys :v:
Cart Relocation Technician* [editline]28th December 2011[/editline]
Oddly enough, cart pushing was one of my favorite parts of working at our local supermarket. Meant I didn't have to deal with customers (much), kept me outside, and I got to listen to music.
We used to get to listen to music during the unloads and stuff but not anymore because some asshole was caught texting. But I don't have to deal with customers, Target treats us really well and I get paid extra to work as late as I do. I don't have to freeze my balls off in the winter either. As for working at Target if he does get hired, I don't want to build his hopes up if he doesn't get the job for whatever reason but they're pretty fucking incredible for a big super store. Walmart treats you like shit. Almost every day they provide us food in the break room. (Thirsty Thursday is Soda, Little Debbie Day etc.) and from my understanding the day-team gets better food because they can ship it in. (No pizza places are open at 4AM for example) but I think all the day managers are scary. My mangers are really nice to me. I go there, do my job, work as hard as I've got to and I have the chance every other day to stay later for more hours or in this situation with the floor buffer fire I get to go in Friday to make even more hours (to unload the truck from that night). It varies place to place but everyone is a pretty good guy, just there to earn a paycheck so there isn't a ton of drama and from what I've seen the 'bad apples' are given jobs that don't involve interacting with the rest of the team. (We had a really dick guy named Bill and all he'd do is bitch and complain and fucked up the momentum on the conveyer belt by pushing things back down because they 'move too fast, god damnit!' " which you can't do. I get paid $8.50 plus a shift differential for working Flow Team which makes it $9.50 an hour. They treat us really well.
Wear khakis and a polo, I guess they have an issue with assholes coming in with jeans and t-shirts and they don't hire them.
What if I wear a dress shirt and a nice pair of jeans with nice shoes? I don't have any khakis or polos
What if I wear a dress shirt and a nice pair of jeans with nice shoes? I don't have any khakis or polos
If it looks nice it may work but go buy Khaki's and a black Polo anyway, I think it'd look better and give a better impression that jeans. Khaki's are the dress code anyway, so you'll need to buy a pair if you get hired anyway. Shower and look nice. That's all I got.

Does it have to be a plain t-shirt or a red polo?
Any red shirt works. Don't wear it to the interview though, wear a different color or you'll come off as an idiot or something. If you so desire you can order a 'Target' shirt off their site once you get hired, like shirts with their Logo and stuff. I was recently given a free Target Volunteers shirt that I wear, I love getting free shit. They also gave me a stuffed Target dog and a card for Christmas. I love my job
Cool guy working retail story: One of my controllers I bought at Best Buy broke and I somehow managed to put the receipt in the box THEN lose the box so I went there hoping to exchange it and that there was a transaction history on the Rewards Zone account or something so I went up there and the guy took it and gave me full store credit, I didn't have any ID on me or anything. Either Best Buy's return policy is incredibly lax around the holidays, the guy is super duper cool, or both.
