Cashier who put her two week notice in two weeks ago and asked if i could still give her the same hours. I said sure, Usually people who put two week notices in get fucked or there job just say don't come back. I find out shes been talking behind my back and one reason shes quitting is cause of my age and the fact I'm in charge of her.
She is 22 or 23, I'm 17 and I'm the assistant manager. I always gave her the breaks she wanted at the time she wanted. Always adjusted for her schedule but apparently she doesnt want to take orders from me.
We had another 17 year old who quit and said in my face "I'm tired of you fucking being incharge of me, your fucking 17 get the fuck out". This was all because she was getting a day taken off her schedule for throwing out a settlement receipt that printed out of our debit card machine while all the other cashiers already knew if that prints out it looks fucking important don't throw it out.
Customers and my other cashiers always compliment the fact I'm extremely nice, Honored returns that shouldnt have and walk around the store with customers talking with them or discussing products we have and offering substitutes. Don't get why some people hate my age.
Not to be racist, but tonight i had yet another bad experience with an Indian. Sure enough i was approached asking if we had any opened item/returned/shelf display computers for sale. We only had about two or three and we found and Hp that was marked down to 345. We then gave him a coupon for an additional 50 off and and then 5% on top of that. (either way he was getting an A8 for less than $300) and he told me that he was suppose to get 10% off. (store policy is always been 5%). So after we argued over 5% (equal to like 12 dollars) he stormed off and took down my name although he promised not to complain. I love when people assume that because they tell me one thing im going to drop every thought i have in my head and just agree to what they say simply because they said it.
Indian customers come off as very rude to me even when they just ask how to locate something, however I think it may be a cultural or language barrier and not something that's intentional. Think about it, if you learn another language you don't necessarily learn how to POLITELY ask for things, all you learn is, "where is the toilet?", "how much is a meal?" etc. You don't learn how to be polite about it, you just learn how to get your message across.
Then again, maybe they are intentionally rude - I dunno.
While I was bagging a lady bought the wrong sized Carrots and wanted to get the larger Carrots that were on sale, so I take that one back and try and find the one on sale, I know one of them is but neither are marked. I ask the guy working produce and it goes something like this:
Me: Hey do you know which one of these is on sale?
Me *Points to Large Carrots
Produce: What item?
Me: These, the carrots
Produce *Walks over to other smaller Carrots*
Produce: These ones?
Me: No the larger ones
Produce: Can you repeat the question?
Me: Which of these two brands of large carrots is on sale?
Produce: That's a good question.
Produce: Do you have alot of time?
Me: I'll just check them both
Then later on I got told to restock the back end (Which isn't my job, and I've NEVER done it before so I had no idea what I was doing) because two of our lazy guys working in back decided they'd done enough work or something like that, ended up taking around 40 minutes of my time I needed to do closing work until I just told my manager that someone else needs to do it. Ended up leaving around 30 minutes late.

So is that why you're browsing?
I find these entertaining and I'm 17 and have a job.
im sorry
Haha, how have I missed this thread? Anyhoo, used to work at a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market for about 8 months. Well one morning I'm in the bathroom at the urinal taking a piss and some drunk/hungover guy walks into the bathroom, walks to the urinal next to me and starts talking to me about some lady he fucked the night before. He finishes before me, walks to the mirror and starts complimenting himself, the whole "You're one sexy guy" bits ya know? He then calls me an asshole little bitch and walks out. I was at a complete loss of words.
I don't work in retail, but I work as a dishwasher that gets overworked and extremely underpaid, also I hate my job because of that. However I'll be getting a new job at Home Depot full time (40+ hours) and a much better wage because my sister is the Human Resource manager for all of the stores in Michigan and she tells the store HR Managers who to hire. Anyway thats my 2 cents.
No offense but there's a difference between the customer being irritating, and you being an asshole. I work in a shop too but I don't feel the need to lay into customers just because they ask stupid questions.
Granted the "I'm a customer, the customer is always right" comment would probably get anyone's blood flowing a bit.

I hope your store is better managed than mine, common sense isn't very common in this place, especially not in the managers.

I take it you never fully grasped the notion of "observational humor."
The only people that find 95% of these stories entertaining are the people who HAVE THESE JOBS. I've been in retail/supermarket work for 3 years of my life, so the vast majority of these stories either have me chuckling or sighing sympathetically. Retail fucking sucks, and sharing these experiences is one of the best ways of getting past it.
I don't have a job, but I love this thread.

It's because you're younger and doing better than them, some people just can't handle that.
At work right now it's almost 1:30 am will be here till 6:30...

Never had anything major to post here before, that was until today.
First some history, I'm the supervisor in the computer section. I came back from a couple days off work for an anime convention to my colleague complaining about a trouble customer from the day before.
Basically the customer accused us of selling him an already opened and/or ex-display laptop (Which is bullshit I pulled it out of storage myself) and after arguing it for an hour just left. Well while we were talking about guess who returned?
Yup the customer, this time carrying the laptop open and showing us the initial Windows install Toshiba does. Frozen of course (Toshiba's imaging leaves a little to be desired some days) demanding a refund yet again. Considering he hasn't even taken the plastic off yet the manger agrees to refund it.
The customer starts talking to my colleague again saying how disappointing it was we would sell him a faulty product, I butt in and mention how windows breaks all the time. Then it goes down like this.
Customer: Oi you SHUT UP, I'm trying to talk to him not you.
Me: No buddy, you shut up. I won't stand idly by and listen to you accuse a friend and colleague of selling you display stock that's faulty and lying about it.
Customer: I said shut up, It's none of your business.
Me: Actually it is, my department AND I sold it to you not him now YOU SHUT up and leave the store.
Customer: I'M A SYSTEM ADMIN AND I KNOW WINDOWS YOU BROKE THIS, THIS NEVER HAPPENS!
Me: I don't like your attitude buddy. *GLARE*
Customer: I... Uh... *Walks off*
Needless to say he walks over to the manager, complains about my conduct for 10 minutes then leaves. Manager was pretty cool about it, he calmly explained to the customer that we aren't normal "sales jocks" and that we are actually trained professionals we know our stuff and when we say a box was unopened it was unopened. The guy apparently just made a grunting noise then huffed off.
Needless to say I'm not selling anything to that guy again :D
I work in the Gaming department of my store and had a lady get mad at me because: "There aren’t enough Girl Games for the Wii!"
Also had someone else come in and ask for Halo: Reach for the PS3. I explained that it was an Xbox only title. She looks at me and says "No, my sons friend says he has it for PS3" and tells me to get her a copy. I repeated it was only for Xbox. She gives me an angry glare and says "Well I wonder how my sons friend has it then?" and stormed out.

I would have told her, "Your son and his friend are fucking liars."
i work in the black neighborhood so pretty much everything is cool and none of the customers ever get mad because im super cute
Ok so we had a power blackout last week in the very large underground electronics store I work in. We had around 40 people in the store and everything just went black.
All the part timers pull out their phones and use the lights on it and show the costumers the way out.
So all the employees gather in the hall and hang around waiting for the power to come on. When some of us remember that there is a case of beer from last weeks new years drink in one of the fridges in the centre of the *dark* store. So we sneak out and just chill out drinking beers with some co-workers. About 2 hours later we get the message the power wont come on again today and we can go home. Best day of work ever, getting paid to sit around and drink beer.
Also:
During this power blackout (Which affected half the city) we had to steer people away from the shop . You wouldnt believe how many people shout and curse at us for not being able to sell them stuff. They act like its our damn fault that half the city is out of power. I get that you are dissapointed that you drove all the way here only to be turned back, but holy shit think about what you are doing for a sec.
Bonus:
Some woman came in at 17:10 (past closing time) a while ago and and demanded to hear some speakers. No we had already counted the money and shut everything down so this is a NONO.
After telling her this she just goes on about how this will make us look bad and that shell tell all her friends not to shop here if I dont let her in. At which I told her I had worked for 9 hours and want to chill out with a beer on the couch.
She goes on a tirade about why she would have to be let in and I decide I dont care and just said good evening and closed the door right before her nose. Felt good.
I am fourteen and my mom is a cashier at a small liquor store. I dropped in to say high and went behind the counter but she had to go with a customer for a minute and left me there.
Apparently I look older than I am, two customers walk in and ask me what types of white whines I recommend so I just suggest random names I see on the shelf. It is all going fine until some drunk guy drops a bottle on the counter and screams for me to let him have it free. I tell him I can not even give him anything cause I do not work there and then he threatens to smash my nose in. Then he goes on a rant about how he should steal the bottle cause 'our' policy sucks until a cop who frequents the place comes in and takes him away peacefully.
Not exactly a retail story, but felt it fit enough.
I hate kids/teenagers in my job, I work in an arcade in a small seaside town.
Quite alot of the time you get groups of about 5 or more just standing around in a group, getting in the way or just making a mess.
I tell them to get out if they aren't playing anything (We're a buissness not a youth club) and they always feel the need to question me.
And apparently we keep getting the higher ups coming down because people keep complaining about one of the managers. :v:
I hate kids/teenagers in my job, I work in an arcade in a small seaside town.
No offense, but it's rather pointless to hate a job that obviously appeals to that demographic...It's like getting a job at Petland yet you can't stand dogs.
And arcades are generally meant for kids / teenagers. If they were meant for adults they'd be called "casinos" are "Dave & Busters."

I don't hate ALL kids/teenagers, just the local ones that stand around getting in the way, making a mess and not spending money.
[editline]30th January 2012[/editline]
I also hate the various banned kids who hang around and keep trying to come in, despite them knowning they aren't allowed to.
Customer called in today about 8PM we're all tired and i didn't even know what was going on till she hung up
Lady: CAN I SPEAK TO A MANAGER?
Me: Your speaking to one right now mam.
Lady: I'm trying to return this tomato paste i bought unopened and the last person who i called told me i couldn't return it.
At this point i'm like the only other person who picks up the phone is the owner of the store himself. So I went to him and asked found out she had no receipt or anything so we can't return it for all we know she bought it longer then 7 days.
Me: Mam
Lady: Yes can i return it?
Me: Mam, Do you have a receipt?
Lady: No i don't, i think i bought it thursday or friday it's less then 7 days right?
Me: Yes but you need a receipt to prove this.
Lady: I don't want my money back just store credit I don't need it.
Me: There's nothing I can do mam, You have no receipt so I can't return or exchange the item.
Lady: Is there anyone else higher I can talk to?
Me: The owner of the store declined your return, He was the original person you were on the phone with.
Lady: Is there anyone that can override him? Anyone higher?
Me: No there isn't.
Lady: Well by god I will never shop there again what an awful place I can't even return something cause I don't have piece of paper that no one reads anyway. Goodbye!
Me: Have a goodnight mam.
After i put the phone down I just realized, She asked for someone higher then the fucking owner of the store.
Quick one, we turned to doors to "Exit Only" and turned off all the computers tonight at 5:30PM.
Standing there talking to other workmates and at about 5:35PM a customer walks up to the doors form the outside and notices they don't open. So they stick their fingers in the gap and pry the damn doors open :/
My colleague walks over to work out what's going on and the customer asks if we can do a quick cash sale, he says no so the customer says "That's fucking shit" and walks off with their million kids in tow.
There's nothing like working in retail to show you that 90% of the world is made of fucktards. People who complain for no reason, who are selfish assholes and who don't seems to recognize the feelings of other people.
I've worked in an Ice Cream store for about a year. I can't tell you how many times i've been abused because some kid as held their ice cream sideway and it's fallen off. It's not my fucking fault, i'll gladly get you another for free so don't fucking get angry.
People just try to make up their own damn menu's all the time. We don't serve thick shakes. But I don't think I have ever told that to someone without then suggesting I make one anyway.
No one seems to realized that the workers of the store don't make the rules. I stand there and serve ice cream. I didn't make the menu, or think up the prices or choose to do this instead of that. So why am I always the one being yelled at when someone doesn't like it.
/Rant
Anyway story time. I was working one day during a very busy Sunday shift. One woman came into the store and ordered about 5 different ice creams, they were all in cups so when they were made they were just put up on the counter in front of her. When she finally paid for them she ordered one of the workers (Who was a 14 year old boy, he had been working there for no more than a month) to get her cup holders so she could take them to her friends. We don't have any cup holders, generally people only have to carry one or two ice creams at a time, and like I said we don't make any rules or decisions. Needless to say she got incredibly pissed off. As the worker looked around for a piece of cardboard to put to ice creams on, she walked over and ordered another one of our workers to help him. The store was already fucking busy and she was taking up half the workers we had to look for some cardboard. When they couldn't find anything she told him that he would just have to carry it for her. Not knowing what else to do he agree'd and carried 3 of her ice creams and walked out the store.
He arrived back about 5 minutes later. Appparently her friends were around 500 metres away from the store. The entire time he was walking with the woman holding her ice creams she complained about how none of the workers at our store cares about the customers and treated her with disrespect.
I know that if that bitch made me do anything like that I would have walked 10 metres out the store, casually placed the ice cream cups on the ground and told her to do it her fucking self.
