A man with "locked-in syndrome" has begun legal action, asking the director of public prosecutions to clarify the law on so-called mercy killing.
Tony Nicklinson, 56, wants his wife to be allowed to help him die without the risk of being prosecuted for murder.
Mr Nicklinson, of Chippenham, Wiltshire, communicates by blinking or nodding his head at letters on a board.
His lawyers say he is "fed up with life" and does not wish to spend the next 20 years in this condition.
According to his legal team, his only lawful means of ending his life is by starvation - refusing food and liquids. His wife Jane says she is prepared to inject him with a lethal dose of drugs, but this would leave her liable to be charged with murder.
Lawyers for the family have issued legal proceedings asking the DPP to clarify whether he would authorise proceedings against Mrs Nicklinson if she were to end her husband's life.
If this was the case then the lawyers would argue that the current murder law infringes Mr Nicklinson's rights to respect for his private life under article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Jane Nicklinson said her husband had been full of energy and life before he had a stroke in 2005. She said he had thought long and hard about his decision and it was his settled wish to die.
Jane Nicklinson: "He has no quality of life at all"
"He just wants the same rights as everyone else. I mean, you or I can go out and commit suicide. He can't. That right was taken away from him the day he had his stroke."
In a witness statement, Mr Nicklinson said: "I am a 56-year-old man who suffered a catastrophic stroke in June 2005 whilst on a business trip to Athens, Greece.
"It left me paralysed below the neck and unable to speak. I need help in almost every aspect of my life.
"I cannot scratch if I itch. I cannot pick my nose if it is blocked and I can only eat if I am fed like a baby - only I won't grow out of it, unlike a baby.
"I have no privacy or dignity left. I am washed, dressed and put to bed by carers who are, after all, still strangers."
why is that scary?
Undoubtedly, I would have to state, that while I do not fear death, per say, I do fear intense or extreme pain. Anything invloving strenuous pain is partially a fear of mine. There is little that specifically scares me, however. I believe this to be a human trait, so, in all I would say that pain is one of the things we fear the most, as a society.
why is that scary?
I meant it's scary to suffer the same fate as that guy. So severely disabled that your life becomes hell, and not even be able to take your own life.
Worse fate than death imo, and much more real than any sort of threat a doll could pose as.

HA! NOW YOU ARE FORCED TO SEE ROBERT THE DOLL!
Anyway, abandoned houses that are just sitting there on the side of the road in the middle of a desert during a road trip are pretty creepy
I think one of the scariest things on earth are tornadoes.
Spiders. Especially the freaking HUGE ones :ohdear:

Your name is totally unfitting.
Realizing that fear is only caused by something unknown or something dangerous, its easily avoided and blocked out.

I used to think you were a respectable poster since you didn't like the nerd of Facepunch, but not anymore.
Insects, Nuclear Warfare, Viruses, those rags you use to wash off tables at restaurants, woods in the night, dolls, and meteorites/black holes. Please god let someone get the reference in there.

I have to say, that doll story became exponentially less frightening when I heard child's play was based on it.
Seriously if they had stuck more to the story and appearance of the real doll those movies would have actually been scary/good.
Everybody stand the fuck back! We have an internet toughguy here!
I'd say death is the scariest. Its one of the biggest mysteries and nobody really knows what happens when you die.

Your brain stops working and you are unconscious forever.
There I spoiled it.
Why do people find anything scary?
Fear is a survival tool, It keeps us alive and tells us when to get the fuck out of there.

You dont need fear in todays world, all you need to know is whats a dumb idea and what isnt.
Like putting your hand in the electrical socket, trying to sex up an animal, having sex with a hooker, running across and playing in a busy road, playing with guns, lighting self on fire, eating unhealthy foods all the time, playing with deadly animals.
I think I could go on and on, fear is a useless primitive tool that is no longer needed with higher level thinking, although looking at most of Facepunch it appears you havent acquired these skills yet.
Pictures of huge sea creatures or dinosaurs scare the hell out of me.

You're a very big megalomaniac, The fact that you jaunt us saying we don't have the skill but the ironic fact is that you don't. For the most primitive things keep us alive in the end.
My mother

You can only have a skill in something by mastering it, by succumbing to fear you are not gaining a skill but submitting to a weakness. Fear and panic make people do stupid things, understanding and controlling these can save your ass.
