Sweet. Insanity and genius, Sigh No More, Heading for Tomorrow and Land of the Free came in the post today. I already have No World Order and Majestic.
Gamma Ray isn’t one of the bands you expect massive curveballs from. They’ve got their formula, their style and to a certain extent you know exactly what you’re gonna get. The album will be comprised of a few up-tempo classic speed/power anthems, a ballad or two and a couple of mid-tempo steady rockers. Unsurprisingly, “To The Metal” fits that template to a T. Nine times of out of ten, that’s a horrible thing but I have to say that this time around, it’s actually pretty enjoyable. What can generally be said about Gamma Ray is that they’re at their best when they play fast and the facepalms usually come out when they attempt ballads or mid-tempo rockers, but those moments are few and far between on “To The Metal”. “To The Metal” is a solid metal album. That’s about it really. It’s far from being Kai Hansen & Co’s best effort, but for what it’s worth it’s a safe and fairly entertaining album that’ll work well live and won’t lose them many fans.
HM
Woohoo, Ill get my album sometime next week
Sweet. Insanity and genius, Sigh No More, Heading for Tomorrow and Land of the Free came in the post today. I already have No World Order and Majestic.
Nice.
Okay I've got To The Metal coming in the post. For some reason the CD + DVD was the same price as just the CD.
Just started listening to this band, and I fell in love at once. It's a same that there's not a lot of their music on spotify. Oh, and Garden of the Sinner is an awesome song.
Damn right its a good song!
Okay I've got To The Metal coming in the post. For some reason the CD + DVD was the same price as just the CD.
Probably some pre-order thing.
Damn right its a good song! Probably some pre-order thing.
No it's still like that.
Neither has mine. Hopefully tomorrow.
Mine comes monday, probably.
My early impression of this album is... that it's very good! I'll try to give a more thoroughly review later on when I've listened to it some more. Also, if you got the chance, get the one with the bonus dvd. I haven't had time to watch the entire documentary (1½ h), but it seem really good. Not the usual crappy handcam stuff done by a random roadie.
I hope its like the Dream Theater "Chaos Behind The Road" -document. I loved that.
So cheesy.
So cheesy.
I like cheesy :3
My review of "To The Metal!". My first impression of this album was that it was very good. Almost all songs were good in one way or another. Though being Gamma Ray they really leave little room for experimentation. So the album really sounded like "one". But after a couple of more listenings it grew to me.

Empathy - Wow. This song has an awesome riff. But I think its real hook is the chorus. Mmm yes. You must hear it. It is really stretching the ultra tight boundaries of which Gamma Ray write songs.
All You Need To Know - Being a sucker for fast and cheesy Power Metal - naturally this is my favourite track of the album. Michael Kiske is singing the chorus. Really nice to hear him sing some good ol' German metal again.
Time To Live - Really good!! Don't let the opening riff scare you away, check out the awesome chorus and guitar solos and the HARPSICHORD! Yeahhh!!
To The Metal - Ahh yes the title track. These songs are usually the best or 2nd best of the album. But this I didn't like. Infact I think it's the worst song here. Mid-tempo and boring chords. It's not bad. It's just a real downer to listen to this after previously hearing three sweet songs. I think this will work great live though.
Rise - Nice intro that sets the standard for the rest of the song. Just sit back and let the double bass hammer you away.
Mother Angel - Nothing interesting here except a sweet ass part of the guitar soloing which has like twin guitar arpeggio harmonies for half a minute. Yummy.
Shine Forever - Kai sings very high pitched on the verse in this one - Rob Halford style - and it's all good. I like the chorus alot! The bass soloing on this track is fantastic. This is a great track. Will work great live (I can't wait!).
Deadlands - Hmmm what to say. Just another very typical Gamma Ray song. Cool chorus, but I don't know. Overall it's not bad, could be better.
Chasing Shadows - This could have been something from "Somewhere Out In Space". Fast song with powerful chorus. The guitar solo is.. mostly weird, but I like it alot. Oh and get this, it has a keyboard solo!
No Need To Cry - The ballad style song (and black sheep) of the album. It's very much like the classic "Silence", but it doesn't cut it. I think the big minus of this song are the awful lyrics. The chorus would've been so much more powerful if they would have sung about something else. Don't get me wrong, I love cheese, but this is just shit.
Bonus DVD: Very good. Great production. It's basically the guys sitting in their studio, talking about the album and mixing and stuff for 1½ h. I think it's worth seeing if you're a fan. --- Overall I like this album. It's fast and powerful and just very Gamma Rayish (new school). The production is excellent as always. I can't speak much about the lyrics since I haven't read them, and it's very hard to hear whay they sing. But I doubt I'd "get" them anyway. What else to say? This isn't "Land of the Free Pt. 1" or "Somewhere Out in Space" - but that era of Gamma Ray is long since over. This is imo their best new school album (Majestic, LOTF 2, To the Metal). It still felt too bland at places, like, that there was no heart behind, but whatever. It's good, check it out! 7 / 10
I love listening to it while browsing Facepunch. Like right now :v:
I love this new album, it sounds great on my dad's old sound system.
Bought the To The Metal CD + DVD set. What I find strange is that Land Of The Free II is more than double the price.
I never knew that I liked metal. Thanks for bringing these guys to my attention Hakita, they're awesome!
