Willys and lidl are both great but I think citygross is the cheapest here, they have restaurant packs of stuff for great prices. Stay away from ICA and Coop, they are expensive.
If you need a job you should check out studentconsulting: http://www.studentconsulting.com/se/jobs/workforus They are a huge staffing agency that focuses on students. You can search for jobs at the site or register your CV and they will call if you match one of their clients. I think you have a fair chance at finding work, I live southwest of Malmö and I'm always annoyed by all the truck and IT helpdesk jobs I can't get because I'm not currently a student. If you get good at Swedish I'm almost certain you can get a job with you background in programming.
Hey thanks, I'll check it out, I'm definitely not fluent at Swedish at the moment, but I've been doing my best to learn at least conversational Swedish before I land there. Maybe I can look for a part time gig using that.
buy food at lidl or willys in bulk, it's way cheaper that way and stay away from instant noodles
Alright, I'll check that out when I'm in country, thanks for the tip. The number I used there was the estimate from the university, but if I can reduce my monthly food expenditures to under $200 that'd be most welcome.
Seems like for this particular trip you need a travel pass that covers the entirety of Skåne, which costs 1249 SEK per 30 days. Very similar to where I live, prices really took a hike over the last couple of years.

Holy shit that's expensive.
It really is not expensive at all. I commute an hour to work everyday by car. I pay $160 a month for parking, plus another ~$200 a month in other car related expenses (insurance, registration, gas, maintenance, etc). With my job, it is reasonable. Ideally I would move and walk to work, but I can't afford to move atm.
But on the other hand, buses don't go everywhere at any time, you can't bring big objects in them, and waiting for them is the worst
My mother is constantly asking how am I supposed to bring the furniture from Malmö where the nearest IKEA store is, to Kristianstad. I actually have no idea if I can bring all the boxes and shit in the train.
Just wanted to say stay safe. Good on you for taking action and getting out.
My mother is constantly asking how am I supposed to bring the furniture from Malmö where the nearest IKEA store is, to Kristianstad.
My mother is constantly asking how am I supposed to bring the furniture from Malmö where the nearest IKEA store is, to Kristianstad. I actually have no idea if I can bring all the boxes and shit in the train.
Get the cheapest and only the basics and you should be fine. I have carried Ikea items in trains before, and you just need to ask for help if you have a lot of items and you're alone. You'll also develop incredible muscles. later edit: If you have to switch trains busses and whatnot, you'd be better off with a shipment from Ikea to where you will live. It's not gonna be cheap though so do this after you find work. So just buy a table, a chair and a mattress. Then get a small fridge locally. You could also search on second hand sites where people sell stuff to eachother, you might find stuff in your city.
Are you going to Sweden (thats the country you're going right?) with your family?
Are you going to Sweden (thats the country you're going right?) with your family?
Nope. My sister is going to England for work (She has a college degree, and much like me has never lived in Europe, although unlike me she's actually been there numerous times), and I will be likely staying with her for just a couple of days while I get shit like the National Insurance Number sorted out after I drop off my bags in Sweden (Thank god for $11 plane tickets), but she's ultimately as broke as I am, part of my savings are hers anyway. My mother and father will be staying in the country for the time being. They're trying to find options to leave, and the idea is that once the two of us get settled we can help them get out as well. The main problem is that my mother doesn't have UK citizenship because of how the system works, despite my father being born in London and me and my sister also having it, so she cannot easily resettle in Europe, but if my father is able to find a work visa anywhere else my mother would likely be able to move with him.
I can't offer anything useful, but I just wanted to wish you the best of luck. That's such a crazy situation to find yourself in and I can't ever imagine having to work something like this out myself. It's easy to see refugees (and those of a slightly lesser degree of severity) on the news and brush it off, but the personal stuff really puts it into perspective. If you end up hurting for cash in Sweden I'd really like to send at least something your way, provided I'm not in a rough spot myself :v:
Can't a spouses move with each other in the UK?
The rules are rather paradoxical in that they require the spouse of a UK citizen to live in the UK for more than 3 years before applying for citizenship, which begs the question of how can you stay in the UK for more than 3 years without it, but whatever. I don't think I'm quite in the same situation as a refugee (I mean after all I'm emigrating legally as a EU citizen, despite my financial problems), but I see what you mean.
Tell them to look more into it... my uncle moved back from Australia (he has UK citizenship) with his Filipino wife and I don't think they had any difficulty getting in. [editline]22nd May 2016[/editline] Good luck to you though. Good that you're able to get out before it gets any worse.
I'm so happy you can make it out of there man, grats and best of luck! :D
This is a bit of a stretch, but is there anybody living in the UK willing to lend me a room, or a couch, for like a week while I wait for the National Insurance Number interview? I'll be there on the 13th of July.
Try the UK chat thread? Might be easier to get someone's help there.
I wish I had the balls to leave my country. I hope you succeed!
So, another update. I managed to secure a job working remotely for a software company! The salary is barely enough to get by, and it's on a 3 month contract, but if I complement it it'll be sufficient for me to not, well, starve to death. The country has been steadily getting worse, I feel like I say that in every update but holy fuck every time I think we hit rock bottom we sink even lower. There's been extremely troubling news of airlines leaving the country, luckily, the one I bought my ticket from is still operating. Food is getting much harder to find, there are riots every day of the week, and every day I just feel more and more anxious about my parents, since they have to stay. It isn't going to get any better in here. I'm evaluating what would be the best way to make some cash on the side that doesn't cut in that much on my working hours. People have suggested maybe like, streaming or making Youtube videos, I had this idea of making detailed videos about the situation in Venezuela with the help of a designer friend, but I might just end up just doing more coding work.
Christ, sounds terrible. Good on you for getting up and working to solve your predicament, not everyone would manage what you're doing. You mentioned rioting, is there violence in the streets where you live at this point?
I think you should make at least a video or two about the situation in Venezuela Big Bang, I wouldn't even worry too much about the production quality. It would be good to hear from someone who's actually lived through it.

You mentioned rioting, is there violence in the streets where you live at this point?
I was about to say no, and then I came home from work and I saw people looting a supermarket just down the road from my house. I've gotten used to the other shit, watching over your back every living second everywhere you go, expecting water or power to go out at any time, but not being able to buy food despite having the money to do so is just, indescribably frustrating. It has made me hate this place just so god damn much, how the government just doesn't give a single fuck about the people and would rather see them starve or die from preventable diseases, and being absolutely powerless to do anything about the situation rather than run away and watch it collapse from a safe distance.
So what's the current situation?
So what's the current situation?
I still have a bit under 3 weeks to go. I've got everything set up to go, I'm going through my stuff to see what I'll be taking with me, there's a bunch of things I'm gonna sell and some clothes I'm gonna give away. For the time being, I'm just hoping the country doesn't collapse just before I leave.
I would go ASAP, I have heard reports about problems with planes in Venezuela recently...
I can't hurry it up, the ticket is already bought and I can't exactly afford another one since they cost well over a thousand dollars.
My tip is is head the Europe and get a job there and if you can not take plane go by boat
My tip is is head the Europe and get a job there and if you can not take plane go by boat
Yes, this is what I'm doing, I'm going to Sweden in 2 weeks.
